Federal ban on gay men's blood donation to be reconsidered

And can unknowingly spread it to a sexual partner or blood transfusion or it's sprayed on vulnerable areas such as the eyes for example, until it's discovered via blood test. This virus isn't something to make light of.

And you say Yiz means

the difference is - Yiz's version of AIDS is much more exaggerated than my version of AIDS. ie - you will get infected from a spit or touching. or even in a pool with a swimmer with AIDS

this virus isn't as bad as you think.

AIDS sucks big time but I never viewed it as common cold. Like I said - AIDS is manageable. You can live a long long time. You don't die as quick as E.Coli upon initial infection. Look at Magic Johnson and this....

tsk tsk

Yup, if you've followed up on Magic he's been aids positive since the early 90's and is still not dead yet.

It is different on an individual case by case basis as some people are more susceptible to it than another.. Same thing that went on with H1N1 flu, that's why it did not turn into an epidemic.

The real problem with HIV is it's ability to perform reverse transcriptase, this is the most crucial problem alone with it. If they could discover ways to intercept it's ability to disrupt helper T's and the viron recognition within the cell binding sites, no problem, game over for HIV. It is also dormant, it is up to its own will to reproduce and infect.

But on context, the northern americas is not at a huge risk at this moment in time. I did the math based on HIV global infected statistics, the north america (USA and canada) contributes only to 0.02% of the entire world population. South africa is much more dangerous, since they have over 20x the infected population.

So someone who is 25 years old should be satisfied with living only to age 45?

Magic Johnson. announced his AIDS status in 1991 (32 years old). Now 51 years old. now he's 19-years AIDS survivor.

There are many AIDS survivors living for more than 25 years. It depends on one's lifestyle and the strain. This is no different from people who smoke or lead an unhealthy life or work at dangerous job.

Magic probably has had AIDs longer than his announced date. That's when he discovered he had it or went public with the info. He could have been positive long before . So it's highly possible it's even over 20 years.

yep. I'm just going by his official announcement for sake of simplicity.

Either way, tests still have to be carried out regardless of the source of the blood. Homosexuals are no longer the only high-risk group-- especially since anal sex among heterosexuals is becoming a cultural norm.

If you can't trust the heterosexuals when there's a world-wide shortage of blood supplies-- where are you going to get the blood? The other half of the heterosexual population that doesn't incorporate anal in their sex life? That's a pretty narrow pool of donators.

Yeah I am sure Magic would say that living with HIV is no big deal at all

Someone who doesn't smoke, leads a healthy life, and doesn't work at a dangerous job, doesn't want to die early by getting AIDS. Maybe you think living until age 51 is good enough but I don't.

They won't use a knowingly-tainted blood in America.

Maybe in Africa, but that's another story for another time. :ugh:

So...American red cross don't want to donate blood that have...gay cooties?

Oh yeah, real mature.

It is surreal that anyone would advocate saying it's ok to have AIDS. No. It's not ok. None of those people wanted AIDS in the first place. Getting it means you'd have to make serious changes and adjustments in your life in order to expand your life, not to mention your quality of life as well. I understand where TXgolfer is getting at.

did you even read the link? Yiz's concern IS exaggerated. It's as if ya'all are treating it as cootie and can get infected from saliva.

DIVING - DIVING - Louganis, Olympic Champion, Says He Has AIDS - Biography - NYTimes.com

this is the Olympic swimmer who hit his head on the springboard as he dived in 1988, spilling blood in pool. The medic stitched his head.... with no latex gloves. and he's not infected.

FACT: AIDS sucks because you have to be extremely diligent and alert with yourself so that you don't infect others
FACT: AIDS is manageable and you can live a long time with medication and a change in lifestyle
FACT: Lot of AIDS/HIV people died before AIDS/HIV kills them. why? they either committed suicide or died from non-AIDS/HIV-related such as car accident.
FACT: We now have advanced blood screening technology that they didn't have back then

With the testing procedures in place today, there is no need to refuse to accept blood from any special population.

yep. let's stop buying food at supermarkets and restaurants. Who wants to eat food infected with E.Coli and Mad Cow? it kills faster than AIDS

Gays are not the only population infected with AIDS. You might want to inform yourself regarding the fastest growing population being found to have positive readings.

That's what I tell them, but someone comes along and draws out a "HUMAN ERROR - Mistake" argument card on me.
