It should be pointed out that neither references are inaccurate. Smokey Bear is the name of the bear, but he is often referred to as Smokey the Bear... because he is... well... a bear.

They even made a TV show based on the bear. It was called The Smokey the Bear Show.

Not sure what the big deal is. It's just a name.
