Tonight, I went with my son (13) to Academics Achievement for gifted 8th graders at his school. This was to inform parents and their children of different Magnet schools beginning next year, which would enable our children for college courses in the 9th grade. The FCAT's were also discussed, beginning in March. A spaghetti/salad/tea dinner was afterwards.

What was so surprising to me, was that (I'm white), and only one other white parent w/her child showed up....the rest of the parents and children were all African-Americans. Around 15 of them.....

One word: ! Obama !! He has inspired the black community so much!....All of them were very nice to me, even the teachers, who are encouraging my son, who is Advanced....This has made me look at things in a different perspective. Even tho' I don't agree w/Obama on a lot of issues, one thing I do admire about Obama is his true inspiration to his Race.

Are you saying that in previous years black families didn't show up?

My son was in the 7th grade last year, and this meeting was for 8th graders only, so I can't answer that question. This is his last year at middle school before going to high school next year.

There are a lot more white 8th graders who are in advanced, but their parents did not show up w/their child. And this was an important event.

I'm just seeing more and more black parents being involved in their child's education. And believe that Obama has given them the inspiration and direction, and more and more black children the motivation to succeed and do well in school.

I cant speak for Florida but I know the the Magnet schools have always been popular with African Americans in Dallas and Houston.

So how do you know it was more black families this year and not just fewer white families this year? Maybe there were lots of black families involved even in the years before Obama.

That's true, Reba. It was just my observation tonight when only 1 other white parent showed up and about 15 black parents showed up.
