This is the people's reward for conserving water:

Water bills are going up The Post and Courier - Charleston SC newspaper

MOUNT PLEASANT -- Residents urged to conserve water will now be charged more partly because they did exactly that.

Mount Pleasant Waterworks' rates have been increased 9 percent, adding about $4 to the monthly bill of a typical residential customer.

Customers who are used to receiving tips from the utilities on how to conserve water may find it ironic that their rates are going up, in part, because people are using less water. ....

Maybe the days of installing a water pump in the back yard or even catching rain water needs to "come back".

I have a water softener and it costs me approx. $12/mo. for the salt (2 bags).

if you have underground freshwater on your property - you're in luck!

The well water here is not fit for humans--it's full of sulfur (stinky). Except in the county areas, residents are not allowed to have wells for household use. They can use them for irrigation only.

A water softener actually costs you more money. You are better off not using the water softener and tucking away the 12 dollars a month.

$12 a month x 12 months = $240 a year!

That's $240 down the drain literally. You could be saving this money for other important things.

I own the water softener.....compared to the city water/sewer/garbage bill, I think I should save a little.....no water bill, and a $77/year garbage bill.

What do you think a water softener does?

Some of the effects of minerals removed from water are longer lasting appliances such as hot water tanks, dishwashers, and washing machines. And it makes things easier to clean because minerals won't be as likely to build up.
