Once again Vista fails. I need to transfer my media files from my old laptop to my new laptop. Things such as photos, videos, iTunes, etc.

I thought this would be easy using a DVD-R, but no such luck. My vista laptop keeps saying there is no media present to transfer the files to.

I've been told you can use an iPod as a portable hard drive to move media files. Can this be done to move files from my Vista laptop to my Win 7 laptop?

I would use a network connection but the two laptops arent allowing access to each other even with the password protection turned off on both.

I have a feeling alot of this is a Vista issue.

Any suggestions??

Right now I'm using the home share feature on iTunes 9 and I'm having to manually import each file one by one from my old laptop to my new laptop and it's taking bloody forever.

I can't get it to import whole albums and DVDs at a time to speed things up a bit. Dammit I will never purchase another Vista OS ever again and I pray God that Win7 performs way better.

I guess that I'm pretty lucky with my Vista. I had to get a new desktop since my old one kind of "blew up". My biggest beef is that I have quite a few programs from the Windows XP SE that will not run on Vista. I am hopeing that I can get them to rn on something here soon. Most of them are my ASL educational CD's that haven't been formatted for Vista yet. My netbook has Windows XP SE, but it has no CD drive.

Avoid Vista at all costs, anything with a Vista OS should be placed in a bonfire and burned to ashes.

I had no choice at the time and I'm hoping to get my upgrade to Win 7 soon. I wonder if my XP programs will run on Win 7?

There's a program out there from Microsoft that you can run to see if your computer can run Win7. If your running XP Pro SE, you should and I emphasize should be able to run Win7 32-bit.

I'm running the 64-bit version.

It would be the Vista that I would upgrade. I'm not changing the netbook. I love that little thing when my son gives me the chance to use it.

Yes upgrade the Vista, get it off your computer. Vista = :mad2:

Dixie is your laptop running Win 7? If so, that's good since I run Win 7 as well and have had no issues so far.

To transfer these files, it is best to store in an external HDD for back up purposes, since you can also copy into your laptop's HDD but it is best to leave the HDD inside clean, like mine does, it is barely used. All my movies, documents, other related files are in one of my external HDD.

Yes Jacob, my new laptop is running Win 7 64-bit Home Premium edition. So far it's not burped, but however the Vista has been shitting me all afternoon for those damned files.

I finally got my iTunes library transferred. Tomorrow I'm going out to get me a flash drive to move the photos and videos.

I have an external HDD, but the Vista did something to it and it kaputted. It was a Seagate 4G HDD too. Ever since I used the HDD to backup the Vista I kept getting a backup failed message. I tried using Windows troubleshooter and online help to sort it, to no avail.

#2 - 4GB HDD of yours is fucked, throw it out of the window, my friend.

#3 - Go and buy a HDD that has at least 500GB in it, you will thank me later.

Mod's Note:

Thread's moved to proper location. :)

Dixie,

Have you considered backing up your media files and important information to an external hard drive and then simply copying the selected files to the necessary locations?

Also, for future reference, Microsoft does have an official Windows 7 Support Forum located here Windows 7 Category . It is supported by product specialists as well as engineers and support teams. You are welcome to check the threads available there for additional assistance and feedback.
