4 police officers shot dead in coffee shop
Lakewood, Washington (CNN) -- Four Lakewood police officers were fatally shot Sunday in what police said was an ambush in a coffee shop.

The officers were sitting in the coffee shop before the start of their shifts, reading on their computers, when the shooting occurred, Sheriff's Department spokesman Ed Troyer said. Authorities believe the officers were meeting and going over cases or doing paperwork, he said.

A gunman came inside and shot all four officers, Troyer said. Two coffee shop employees and other customers inside the shop were unharmed, said Troyer, who said the shooting "was a targeted, selected ambush."

"As you can imagine, they are traumatized," he said of those inside the coffee shop. "Some are in shock."

Families of the officers have been notified, Troyer said. All of the officers -- three males and a female -- were in uniform, wearing vests and had marked patrol cars parked outside, he said.

A $10,000 reward was offered for information leading to an arrest, Troyer said.

Police are looking for one man in connection with the attack, which happened at about 8 a.m., Troyer said. The suspect is described as an African-American man, between 5 feet 7 inches and 5 feet 10 inches tall, wearing a black coat and blue jeans, with a "scruffy" appearance, he said. The man is believed to have fled the coffee shop on foot, he said.

Authorities are not ruling out the possibility that a second person was involved in the attack, Troyer said.

"We're doing everything we can," Troyer said. Authorities were conducting searches in numerous locations, he said, and dogs had been brought in to attempt to track the suspect.

A couple of blocks surrounding the coffee shop were cordoned off. Several other police agencies were on scene to assist.

There were no known threats against police before the incident, Troyer said.

Washington Gov. Christine Gregoire, in a statement, said she was "shocked and horrified" at the shootings.

"I offer whatever support is needed to the Pierce County Sheriff in their search for the perpetrator," Gregoire said.

Lakewood is about 40 miles south of Seattle and 10 miles southwest of Tacoma.

Bystanders gathered outside the Forza Coffee Company, some of them in tears as they spoke to CNN affiliate KING.

The coffee shop is on the edge of McChord Air Force Base. Spokesman Bud McKay said the base was not shut down, but security was ramped up around the perimeter as a precaution.

The military has offered assistance to police, he said, but it has not been requested.

holy crap!!!!!!! this is almost unheard of nowaday!!! the last time we had this kind of cop massacre was back in mafia age. wow......

I hope they find the guy, ASAP. I have a bad feeling he'll end up dead before an explanation can be found as to why he did that.

This is absolutely awful! Another blow to the thin blue line.

I wonder if this was a twisted revenge killing?

I was thinking he was hired to kill the officer(s) related to investigation. I'm sure they're covering all angles but this is still horrible.... horrible.... horrible.....

On the TV news they just said that the four officers were not working as a task force on any particular case, so they don't think that was the connection.

:dunno:

Four Police Officers Killed in Ambush
LAKEWOOD, Wash. — Four uniformed police officers were shot to death Sunday as they sat in a coffee shop near Tacoma, Wash., in what one law enforcement official called “a flat-out ambush.”

“This was an execution, no doubt,” Ed Troyer, a spokesman for the Pierce County Sheriff’s Department, told The News Tribune of Tacoma and Seattle. “This was a targeted attack.”

The four officers were a patrol team for the police department of Lakewood, a suburb of 58,000 people located south of Tacoma. The force is relatively new, about a decade old.

Mr. Troyer’s force received the 911 call at 8:15 a.m. Pacific time. The News Tribune reported on its Web site that a man with a handgun walked into a Forza Coffee Company cafe and shot the officers, three men and a woman, as they were checking their laptop computers. The gunman then fled on foot.

Speaking later in the day, Mr. Troyer said, “We have no motive at all,” adding, “I don’t think when we do find out what it is, it’s going to make sense or be worth it.”

He added that there appeared to be no connection to the slaying of a Seattle police officer, Timothy Brenton, who was sitting in his patrol car on Halloween night. Several days later, a suspect was shot, the police said, when he tried to use a gun while fleeing. The suspect, Christopher Monfort of suburban Tukwila, was said by the police to have played a role in the firebombing of four police vehicles in October.

The Forza chain has two dozen shops in the state of Washington. The shooting took place at the location in unincorporated Pierce County, about a quarter-mile from Lakewood, in a small shopping center with a nail salon, a teriyaki restaurant and a cigar shop. Residents described it a low-crime area, and Mr. Toyer said he did not think that robbery was a motive.

Police from at least four departments were setting up roadblocks and scouring the roads. buildings and parking lots around the coffee shop in a search for the shooter. At least one helicopter and police dogs were used in the search.

A $10,000 reward has been offered for information about the slayings. Mr. Troyer said that the sheriff’s department was receiving “lots of tips” in cities around the state.

Initially, there were conflicting reports whether one or two men were involved. The lead suspect was said to be about 5 foot 8 inches tall, in his 20s or 30s with scruffy facial hair and wearing a black coat and blue jeans. “Someone came in and opened fire,” Mr. Troyer said

There were other customers and baristas inside the shop at the time of the shooting, although none were apparently hit by gunfire.

Brad Carpenter of Forza Coffee told The Associated Press that his staff was unharmed and was spending the day answering questions by police investigators.

“I’m a retired police office, so this really hits close to home for me,” he said.

The employees, Mr. Troyer said, “were stunned and shocked, traumatized.”

one thing that caught my eyes - see highlighted in red bold print above. with that statement, Reba's suspicion makes a better sense in here. It is possible these officers were involved with an incident in the past that led to this revenge killing.

It might not even relate to this particular police force.

That's all I'll say for now about motive. It's just speculation on my part.

It seems to be a more personal shooting--the shooter faced them with a handgun; it wasn't a sniper attack from a distance. The cops were wearing vests; did he shoot them in the face?

for sniper attack - you need a skill for that... like DC sniper. He was trained by military. executing these officers up close and personal implies revenge killing or a message to officers/public.

but yea we'll have to sit and wait for further details.... :(

I have a friend who believes the penalty for killing a police officer should not be any more severe than killing any other citizen.

I disagree.

What protection is a cop to me if killing them is no different than killing me? The bad guy would just kill both of us - sort of a two for one.

I believe the penalty for killing a cop should be so severe as to be almost unthinkable.

For those who is not aware - killing federal agents, cops, or any law enforcement agents is an automatic death penalty. I agree with that penalty. After all.... it's what kept them safe for past several years. the statistic on law enforcement killings are very low.

according to FBI site -
-41 officers were killed in 2008 (from 19 states)
-57 officers were killed in 2007 (from 25 states)
-48 officers were killed in 2006 (from 25 states plus DC & Puerto Rico)

From 1997 to 2006 - 562 officers have been killed in the line of duty.

.

So killing 4 at one time is roughly 10% of the total expected for the year.

I can conceive my mother arguing that the death penalty is far too human in a case such as that.

10%??? no way.

Well I did round off. 4 would be 7% in 2007 and 9.75% in 2008.

Over 8% if you average off the three years.

My usual assumption is the future sticks pretty close to the patterns of the past; if so, you can expect 40 to 50 police officers to be killed in 2009: so I would say 4 officers killed at one time is close enough to 10% to make me shudder.

curious - officer death compared to what?

You posted statistics. I would never have guessed that many police were killed in a year. I could not help but notice that 4 officers murdered at one time was shockingly close to 10% of what you might expect for all of 2009.

yes - I'm asking you what you're using as total figure. 8-10% of what equals to average number of officers killed per year.

there are about 700,000 law enforcement officers in USA (excluding federal agents) so if it's 8-10% officers killed per year... that would mean average about 56,000 officers (8%) to 70,000 officers (10%) would be killed per year :eek3:

proper rough calculation would be - average about 0.007% officers are killed per year.

Yeah, I heard the news and that was really sad. I hope they find that crook soon and throw him into the shredder.
