Is wanting deaf children cultural/parental?

most parents I met at KODA events have hearing children and that is fine with them. No need to move to Frederick, argued with deaf kids more often in signs, etc....

I am not sure what do you mean by that?

If I have a deaf kid, I will have to move to a city with a deaf school or drive longer distance to drop my kid at a mainstreamed school.

Have you been to Gallaudet? KG and PKZ alumni prayed for their kids to be deaf, like them.

Oh i understand what you mean about the distance to get there at school for deaf kids. I know.
Yes I have and was a student at gallaudet. I know personally some of KG and PKZ alumni who dont think that way about wishing kids being deaf, not ALL of them. I know what you mean but that is not all of them. Same for DE and ASP too.

My brother is a member of one of these said fraternities. Just asked him if it was true about them praying for having deaf children. He said none that he is aware of.

Deafness just doesn't compare to those types of disabilities. From what I've seen deafness seems to be more of a annoyance than truly disabling. More like being left-handed or shorter than average.

Quite frankly I'm very happy that my granddaughter is left-handed. And if I had to choose, I'd certainly pick deafness over the Cystic Fibrosis she was born with.

Yes, I see that Deafness changed the rule of disablity. All other disabled kids learn things from their parents but deaf kids learn things from their deaf peers. All other disabled kids are limited physically in what they want to do but deaf kids can do anything as long as ASL is in their environment (and tech stuff for the deaf like CC and tty, etc).

I can tell you one thing, raising a hearing child is hard on me. The standard how a hearing child should speak and write is higher.. The teacher make him bring home his English homework, but I don't know how to help him without his work being graded wrong. With a deaf child, we are at the same level. But don't worry, your parents love you very much. And as long as you treat their deafness as a treasure, and not look down upon or something to hide, then your relationship with them will improve. I love my hearing child very much.

That bugs me like hell. If I have a deaf child and the education is bad, I would go after the school to get them to improve their education.

My former vocational rehab. counselor has a natural hearing son and an adopted deaf son. She told me that she is not happy with the deaf son's education and she would make the deaf son practices with the hearing son's homework assignments. The hearing son does his own homework as well. She is big on Deaf education like me.

Here's an excellent explanation about genetic research and deafness. The author describes how different parents feel about deafness. Highly recommended.

My Perspective As a Deaf Person Working With Geneticists - Genetics and Deafness - Information on Hearing Loss - About Hearing Loss - Boys Town National Research Hospital

Interesting reading. I would like to add one thing.... if the number of deaf people are dwidled down to just handfuls, the discrimination would increased greatly. If there are more of us around, they would learn to accept us better.

Parents who do not accept their children have emotional problems. Most likely, these parents have a personality disorder. It doesn't matter why the parent will not accept the child. There is something seriously wrong with parents who do this.

I agree that eliminating genetic deafness will create more discrimination against the deaf. It's disturbing to hear the message that those of us who are deaf because of genetics need to be eliminated.

I wish it was 90% of deaf children born to deaf parents..then we wouldnt have so many deaf children with language delay or deficients issues. Then, more hearing parents wouldnt have their "dream" of a "perfect" child ruined.

It'd be kind of cool if there was a switch at birth program between hearing families with a deaf child and deaf families with a hearing child so the children could get the early language exposure they need. Of course that would divide the Deaf and hearing worlds even more but it would make a lot of childhoods happier too.

Nah, it wouldnt divide it thanks to the ASL classes sprouting up all over in high schools and colleges. I have met so many hearing people who became good signers simply because they took those ASL classes. The girl that my brother is dating is one of them. I find it so awesome! However, with the whole oralism pressures on deaf children, I find it really f***cked up.

I think it would be awful!! I have two hearing children and I would not have wanted to trad for anything!

That's because you already had them. Same goes with my children. I just wish more deaf children were born to deaf parents because I have taught deaf students from deaf families and their reading and writing levels far surpass those from hearing families. Also, they have so much background knowledge because of the language and communication they get at home instead of the school trying to be the parents and educators.

I think CJB was referring to the immoral debate of switching babies at birth... without the parents knowing about it.

Remind me of a case from Ghost Whisperer that involved kids that were switched without the parents' knowledge, and one of the kids died... and wanted to inform her birth mom.

OOOPS! I missed that point. Yea, I wouldnt want to trade my hearing kids for deaf kids.

However, my hubby and I have been talking about adopting a deaf child. Just wish we werent so strapped for cash now. Maybe later.

OK I think people missed I was joking.

I was joking.

I wish more parents could accept their children they way they are.
