House Passes Landmark Health Care Bill

If ya'll have a shortage of doctors in Conn., come on down here. We can't swing a cat without hitting a doctor. Some places need to make themselves more attractive to recruit people.

Out of curiosity, where exactly is "down here"?

Sorry, souggy, I was directing the question to sallylou since she claimed that they "can't swing a cat without hitting a doctor." (I'm originally from Texas, myself). I also believe that there are plenty of doctors (especially plastic surgeons), yes, but not general practice/primary care physicians available nationwide.

Then run a search on the forum. She has disclosed what town she live in.

And the reason why there is not enough doctors nation-wide is because of regional disparity. Some places have more than enough doctors to service others... other places don't have enough.

Actually, it is becoming epidemic across the country. Due to the high malpractice rates and low health insurance reimbursements, the numbers of doctors going into general practice is declining rapidly.

As for sallylou's whereabouts...all it says under her avatar is "my own personal Idaho".

I'm in Houston. We have a population of about 5 million. Plenty of doctors of all kinds. In more rural areas, there aren't enough primary care physicians because they can't get doctors to come there. For instance, a friend of mine went to Corpus Christi and got a big bonus because they needed a anesthesiologist. I don't blame doctors for not wanting to live in a certain place. They made it so attractive to her that she moved her family there.

Do you even know which specialty pays the highest in malpractice premiums? Obviously not.

Plastic surgery, but they are not incumbered by the low insurance reimbursements either, as plastic surgery generally isn't covered by insurance

You are a bit mistaken. Depends on the reason the plastic surgery is being done. Much reconstructive surgery is reimbursable. And the reason that physicians specialize in reconstructive surgery generally has virtually nothing to do with malpractice rates or insurance reimbursement. Nor do they pay the highest malpractice premiums.

My location says "my own private Idaho." Hat tip to the B-52's.

OK, so I bolded the part that I question. Why is it that way? When I was laid off, I was offered COBRA coverage, at the rate of nearly $600 a month! For just me! I see the reports of insurance execs receiving 8 figure compensation packages, and they cannot afford to pay for medical procedures? A healthy man needs to pay over $7,000 a year for insurance? And people want to keep it this way? Insurance companies are paying millions a day for lobbying efforts, and you want status quo???

My fellow 80's music fan:

Rock Lobster! down... down... down...

Great dance music. :laugh2:

You are right that # of general practitioners is declining but your reasons for it are wrong. Might do you good to get out a little more often. Don't limit yourself to papers.

I am in Texas too. We are loaded with Docs. Still have to wait forever to get in to see one. Then when ya get in there, they make ya wait in the waiting room and the office as well. In and out in 10. They are rude too. Not all of them, just most of them and trust me, I know most of them.
