CINCINNATI – A woman took a stranger's toddler son over her knee and spanked him three times inside a Salvation Army store after he said something that annoyed her, police said Wednesday.

Gloria Ballard was arrested on an assault charge in the Tuesday incident. In a court appearance Wednesday, she asked for a public defender and a not guilty plea was entered for her. She was also ordered to stay away from 2-year-old Sean Goode and his mother, Donnay Jones.

Outside court, Ballard denied wrongdoing and said she gave the boy a hug and gently patted his backside because he was upset.

Jones said her son got spanked after Ballard told her she should make him behave.

"She was basically trying to tell me what to do with my son," Jones told WLWT-TV. She told Ballard she would handle her own business and son. Then, she said, Ballard took Sean from her and spanked him, causing him to cry.

"I was shocked," Jones told WCPO-TV on Wednesday.

Ballard, 43, faces a charge that carries a maximum sentence of six months in jail and a $1,000 fine. She said she is a mother and grandmother who was just trying to help.

"And I got this," Ballard said, while holding a paper that described the charge.

That's crossing a boundary to grab and spank someone else's child. She will deserve her punishment.

funny thing is - she said she "hugged the boy and gently patted his backside"

Guilty or not, this is a good example of why no one should touch another person's child. I am sorry, but as soon you place your hands on someone else under the age of 18, you are asking for a harassment charge.

But wow... what made her think it's okay to spank someone else's kid?

It is not up to other parents to tell other parents how to raise their children... let alone discipline their children for them. My parents have a friend that used to constantly criticize me when I was around her... treating me like one of her own kids. It was highly innappropriate.

And :giggle: @ the hugging thing. Can you say: :bsflag:

Well, I am a lady so I can't say that. But I agree with you.

Geez, if someone took my son to even hug him, I would think that person was trying to kidnap him! That's definitely crossing the line...ask permission first.

We cuss and fume at unruly kids in stores, schools, etc.! But hands off!

One of my neighbors has "hollared" at my boys several times. After the 3rd time, I went over and talked to her. Do not hollar at my children! Speak with me, pls.....we're still friends. She loses her temper at times, but don't take it out on my boys.

I agree. I even get uncomfortable when strangers approach my kids to talk to them.

On one hand, you don't touch someone's child.

But on the other hand, parents don't do enough to discipline their children when they go bad. But there is such a thing as TOO MUCH discipline. So there's a balance that is key to raise a child.

6 month jail is too harsh a punishment. I say just give her the $1000 fine and a warning. It's none of her business as he isn't her child! What she could have done was to find the child's mother or father and if the parents are nowhere, call the police and let the cops take the child to custody and punish the parents for neglecting their child.

I agree.

The key is to balance it out. But, however, surely, we all do get frustrated, perhaps, huff and puff when other children are behaving terribly in a public setting. That also does not give us the right to do such thing to a stranger's child.

Come to think about it, Supposedly, if we were all allowed to spank a stranger's child - Now, what do u think would have happened? I'm betting that it won't be a pretty picture because we all know that we are already living in one big strange world.
