TV tuners for PC

I still thinking for the cheapest way to record TV shows with my PC or LCD monitor is to use a TV tuner from my cable TV. Either, an internal PCI card or an external USB box which includes closed captioning. Foxrac or other ADer, do you know about it? Help me?
 
Should be interesting to read this thread if anyone could assist...For myself, I am not an expert in this, NEVER used this feature. :\

tip, for pci card is good for desktop in one place, for usb box can be portable move around, plug n go like laptop, can be use desktop too.

I been using HTPC for several years and depend on CC fully so feel free to send me a PM on any question you may have.

Sound good! But I can't find your posts about TV tuners. What date? What model of Win TV do you have? I dont know which one is better for USB TV tuner adapter or TV tuner board. :shrug:
 
I currently use Winfast TV2000, which is a PCI card that also supports closed captions. It is an old card, so you can probably find them very cheap on Ebay. But, being an old card, the TV tuner is analog, which is why I am looking at upgrading soon.

I am not sure if you are a Linux user, but the card works on Linux; at least I know viewing works ok.

As for USB vs Internal PCI, etc. I think you should buy an internal card, because I think USB is slower. I was also told that if you live in an area with bad reception, then don't buy a USB tuner.

USB 2.0 port is faster than old USB 1.1? I won't use airwave reception which is too far from TV towers. I have tv cable. Can connect it into PCI card or USB tuner adapter to watch ATSC or clear QAM digital cable TV on your PC.

In bold, USB 2.0 is faster and more bandwidth than USB 1.1 for transfer.

For other questions, yes....

I use PVR 500 Tuner card - Hauppauge WinTV-PVR-500 MCE TV Tuner Adapter reviews - CNET Reviews It have dual tuner and I can record and watch 2 different shows at same time.

I use DirectTV box to record from. CC is turn on my DirectTV box so CC is always record on file all the time. I can watch my TV on any portable video or laptop etc and have CC because it already burn into video on recorded.

For my Software I use SageTV - SageTV® Media Center - PVR, Music and Photos for Windows and Linux PCs and consumer electronics devices It run on Windows but you have to buy.

SageTV and MythTV are 2 most popular HTPC software.

You can use HDTV tuner card to record over Air but not very many HDTV tuner card have a good CC so make sure you research and review before select a HDTV tuner card.

Or you can get Hauppauge HD-PVR HD PVR Product overview and hook to HDTV cable box or HDTV DirectTV box and record HDTV shows. HD-PVR use compoment to record from STBs. CC comes from HDTV cable box or DirectTV box.

Thank you for info on Hauppauge. I think about WinTV-HVR-1800 or WinTV-HVR-2250 PCI boards. I have dual monitors. I don't need HDTV cable receiver (PVR). Work it without cable receiver which includes WinTVv7 closed capationing?

You will need Cable or Sat receiver or STB (Set Top Box) for HDTV stations.

Without cable receiver you can only recieve analog signal thur cable and HDTV tuner will only record analog station thur cable.

But HDTV tuner will record HDTV thur air antenna.

I am not familiar with HVR-2250 or 1800 so I suggest you goggle and research to see if CC on those tuners card work or not.

My tuner card is still PVR 500 and I am still using analog TV on my DirectTV HDTV reciever but Closed Caption is provided by my DirectTV box not by my TV.

I can watch and record clear QAM digital TV. Clear QAM digital TV channels are TV channels which are broadcast my cable TV network. Includes Hauppauge's WinTV v7 application, which allows you to watch analog cable TV, QAM and ATSC digital TV channels. Right?

Yes if you know your cable offer clear QAM Channels

Not many cable companies offer clear QAM channels and still require a STB to watch HDTV channels.

If your cable offer clear QAM then you should have no problem using HDTV Tuner card that support QAM and make sure you research on tuner card to find one with good CC support.


Like I mention in my other post, if you have a tuner card and you record a show then run ccextractor on your mpeg file from recorded and see if it find and save CC text to a txt file.

Hauppauge is best to use it in your computer. I used VP200 hooked up to my computer with TV card in it. It worked best for me. Yes, it does work with closed caption when you watch TV shows. I can try it with MVP to get it hooked up to my computer. :lol:

But PCI tuner card doen't include audio/video component video loop? Sorenson VP200 includes a/v component hook up only. What is model of your TV card?

It's good for transfer but sucks when compare to FireWire 3200 due utilize alot of CPU.

There's still enough bandwidth for tv tuners to support 2.0.

VP200 use composite (RCA yellow) not component (RCA Red/Green/Blue)

Many Analog tuner card does have composite inputs like the Hauppauge 150 / 300 / PVR500 / WinTV etc that you can plug your VP200 into and record your VP calls to your harddrive.
