Mom charged with changing daughter's grades
School secretary accused of using co-workers' passwords to access system

HUNTINGDON, Pa. - A high school secretary illegally changed grades in a school computer system to improve her daughter's class standing, according to criminal charges filed Thursday.

Caroline Maria McNeal of Huntingdon is accused of using the passwords of three co-workers without their knowledge to tamper with dozens of grades and test scores between May 2006 and July 2007 at Huntingdon Area High School in central Pennsylvania, the state attorney general's office said.

McNeal, 39, is alleged to have improved her daughter Brittany's grades and reduced those of two classmates to enhance Brittany's standing in the 2008 graduating class.

School officials corrected the grades before the students graduated, prosecutors said.

Attorney General Tom Corbett said the case involves "a serious violation of the public trust."

"Our citizens depend on people in public positions, including school employees, to protect the safety and security of these records and not use confidential information for their own benefit," Corbett said.

McNeal was charged with 29 counts of unlawful use of a computer and 29 counts of tampering with public records. Each count is a third-degree felony punishable by a maximum of seven years in prison and a $15,000 fine, said Nils Frederiksen, a spokesman for Corbett's office.

No telephone number was listed for Caroline McNeal. Brittany McNeal is not charged with any wrongdoing.

Jill Adams, the school district superintendent, said prosecutors have asked school officials not to comment publicly about the case.

"We would like to have it be finished, over and done," she said.

In all, McNeal is accused of altering nearly 200 scores and grades covering four school years.

Conflicting SAT scores
The situation came to light in October 2007, when an employee of the high school guidance office discovered conflicting SAT scores for Brittany.

Scores provided directly by the College Board showed a cumulative score of 1370, while an unknown source had previously entered 1730, according to court papers.

Further investigation revealed that the data had been entered from Caroline McNeal's computer starting more than a week before SAT scores for other students were entered.

Three other secretaries at the school told investigators they had shared their passwords with Caroline McNeal during vacations or other prolonged absences.

That's awful. How could she ever expect her child to achieve in life when she was trying to give her such a dishonest start.

Totally cheating...

That's like that she was teaching her daughter that it is okay to cheat and lie or whatever...she should've known better.

:jaw: UNFUCKBELIEVEABLE!!!! She shouldn't do that! I understand she wanted her daughter do her best but still...it is damn wrong to change her grades!!!

So how long will mom be behind bars? Guess daughter will learn that cheating is bad!

When I was in college, there's a zero tolerance policy on cheating and plagiarism. Cheat once and you get a 0 for that assignment. Cheat again and you flunk the class. Cheat a third time and you flunk out of college.

What a shame that a trusted employee of our children's schools had to go that low.

Is she that ashamed of her daughter?? Seems more like she has to make "herself" look better!!

Tampering with the grades to do so makes the other kids that deserves what they earned get lower grades.

Defiantly, a breach in public trust and violating the other children well earned grades.

She should be charged for it.

Gee....

Just when we thought we would see a parent do better but in this case, it was clearly the wrongdoing of the mother to tamper the information.

How can one expect for her to be a role model when she is not exactly doing it herself?

Family values at it's finest.

This could have been preventable if the other secretaries had not given out their passwords.

The other preventable measure would have been that all school staff members should have been required to change their passwords every 60 days and cannot use the same password twice within a two-year period. They also would not have been allowed to use their names, birth dates, or social security numbers for a password and would have been required to use 7 letters, no repeating letters, at least one special character, and at least 3 numbers.

As for giving out passwords - the other staff that gave out their passwords should be reprimanded although they did not believe this woman was involved in any wrongdoing with their information. Like I said - if the other secretaries had not given out their passwords, this never would have happened. If the work to be completed was time sensitive, then they should have had it completed BEFORE taking leave.

Many Secretaries have access to passwords. It is not always from teachers telling her their password. It is held in the files.

I believe this Mother had access to the passwords, since she worked in the office.

Having secretaries access to passwords in the files defeats the purpose of having a password altogether.

Lesson learned? Passwords should be kept private no one should have access to them, except for the user they are assigned to.
