A 4-year-old girl died late Wednesday after her mother fell asleep and woke to find a television stand and TV on her child.
Police this morning identified the victim as Dymounique M. Wilson, who just celebrated a birthday last week, a police report said. Police are considering the death an accident and no charges have been filed.
The incident occurred about 7:30 p.m. at 6619 Dove Creek Drive on the Westside.
Samara Brinkley, 26, told the Times-Union this morning she had just fallen asleep when she heard a noise and woke to find the 27-inch televsion on top of her daughter’s upper body. The small TV stand, on wheels, was on the girl’s legs. Blood was coming from the back of her head, Brinkley said.
“I dozed off for a quck minute. I heard a loud boom.
When I woke up, I saw the TV on her,” Brinkley said. “I slipped her from under the TV, picked her up, brought her in the living room and laid her down.”
Brinkley said she was panicking and called her mother and 911. She said she was on the phone with a rescue dispatcher, who asked her to check if her daughter was alive.
“The dispatcher told me to put my ear to her mouth to see if she was breathing,” Brinkley said. “When I did, she moved.”
Brinkley said rescue arrived and took her child to the hospital, where she was pronounced dead.
Brinkley, who has a 6-year-old daughter and 1-year-old son, said she is devastated by Dymounique’s loss.
“I still can’t believe it. She was just here,” Brinkley said. “I’m trying to hold it together.”
Lt. Larry Schmitt of the Sheriff's Office homicide unit said no foul play was suspected. The tortured wails of the child's family pierced through the neighborhood when they were informed of her death.
