U.S. Declares Public Health Emer.: Swine Flu

If Biden's answer wasn't important, why was it asked? (Not asked by a conservative, btw.) People want to know if they are getting truthful information about the situation. If Biden doesn't believe the planes and subways are safe, people want to know why. They feel entitled to access the same straight information about the flu that Biden has.

Not at all. It goes to credibility. If we can't trust what the President and his administration say about the flu danger, then we need to hold them accountable for the truth.

That's right, try to deflect Biden's boo boo by mocking others.

If you really want a laugh, watch the press secretary's performance from this afternoon--it was a hoot.

Oh, yeah...journalists never ask unimportant questions, do they? :laugh2:
If people want reliable information, the CDC and WHO have easily accessable websites, and their statements have been on both radio and T.V. The Prsident, nor the Vice-President are physicians. Stick with the CDC and WHO if you want information on health related concerns. It would be my guess that Americans realize that the Vice President does not have expertise in medical matters.

In response to your snide remarks, Jiro. Perhaps you should resort to that yourself if you don't want to be responded to in kind.
so a professional and older woman like you would respond in kind? :ugh2:

Way to go. You have just stated that the majority of the American public can not be trusted to think rationally and logically. Where does that attitude of superiority come from? Keep digging that hole.

Exactly. Level 5 pandemic threat in response to the swine flu.

School Days Are Disrupted, by Facts and Fears of Flu
It would ordinarily not have attracted a lot of attention. Children get sick at school every day. But on this day it was the topic of intense after-school talk, and even news media attention, because of the recent swine flu outbreak — and the New York City health commissioner’s remark on Tuesday linking Ascension School to the spread of the virus.

The commissioner, Dr. Thomas R. Frieden, amended his remarks on Wednesday. He pointed out that there were no confirmed swine flu cases at Ascension, and said he should have notified the school before revealing — at a City Hall news conference attended by reporters from around the world — that six or seven students had gone home with fevers this week.

But the word is out — true, false or in between — and ever since Tuesday, life at the school has been “like a big confusion,” said Maria Garcia, a fifth grader.

“The priest says the TV news got everything wrong and there was a lot of mistakes,” she said.

The outbreak has been dubbed swine flu — now officially called Influenza A(H1N1) — because scientists believe it started in pigs, but they do not know if that was recently or years ago. The name change was designed to allay fears about pigs and eating pork.

Swine flu and hype – a media illness
We are poorly equipped to think around issues involving risk, and infectious diseases epidemiology is a tricky business: the error margins on the models are wide, and it's extremely hard to make clear predictions.

Why has the CDC Stopped Reporting New Cases of Swine Flu Cases?
The CDC is not reporting these new cases on their website... why?

I called the CDC and asked why they are not reporting these new confirmed swine Flu cases on the cdc.gov website and they said that "they do not want to cause people to panic. The Obama administration and the Department of Homeland Security are very concerned about people panicking and rioting over limited supplies. The CDC has stopped reporting new cases for the time being."

why the renaming of swine flu as H1N1? Why are some schools shut down? Why the fear of eating pork?

What does being a professional older woman have to do with anything, Jiro? Treat me as rudely as you just did, and I will respond in the same way. Don't expect a break from me when you pull out your ill devised attempts to insult and intimidate.

Some schools have shut down in order to disinfect the facility to help contain the spread of the flu virus. That includes both H1N1 and the more common flu virus that is currently being contracted. Schools do that all the time in the face of air borne disease. They also do it in the case of disease that is contracted through non-air borne means. That is nothing new.

Why the fear of eating pork? You'll have to ask someone who is afraid of eating pork. They have renamed the virus because the risk of contact is not through swine at this point, but other humans, and because H1N1 is a mutation of the flu virus found in swine.

The actions by Eqyptian officials has already been disputed. Go to the thread devoted to it.

Your last link is blogging.

How about you use the official CDC website and the WHO website for accurrate information instead of googling what you think will be inflammatory. Discriminate your sources, Jiro. You are doing exactly what you just accused the majority of Americans of doing.

Where in the world does a recommendation for avoiding contracting a virus show no confidence in airlines and subways? Now you are really attempting to insert meaning. And poorly at that. His statements show nothing of the kind.:laugh2:
If Biden is confident that the airlines and subways are safe, then why would he advise his family not to use them? He specified airlines and subways. It doesn't make sense.

I suppose you did get the memo?
You didn't watch, read, or listen to Obama, Napolitano, or Sebelius?

Please review my original post:

""The advice he is giving family members is the same advice the administration is giving all Americans: That they should avoid unnecessary air travel to and from Mexico. If they are sick, they should avoid airplanes and other confined public spaces, such as subways. This is the advice the vice president has given family members who are traveling by commercial airline this week," Biden's spokeswoman, Elizabeth Alexander, said in a statement.

White House press secretary Robert Gibbs apologized for Biden's remarks, saying the vice president misspoke...

"Today" show co-host Meredith Vieira and NBC's Chuck Todd discussed Biden's statement after he made the remarks, wondering if the vice president really had intended to caution the American public to stay off public transportation and airplanes. They noted his comments seemed to contradict public statements by other high-ranked White House officials.

The White House is concerned the vice president's remarks create a panic that causes people to avoid public transportation, Todd later reported."

i guess your maturity level is lower than I thought...... :dunno:

I'm sorry but no. Reread my post. It's because of the unnecessary fear and misconceptions.

I've already stated who I believe the irrational ones to be.:cool2:
So if Biden is rational, we should all avoid plane rides, and if he is irrational we should ignore him.

Will you fly if you have the opportunity?

Oh, Joe: VP's off-base flu advice needs do-over
WASHINGTON – Oh, Joe. Vice President Joe Biden — with a well-deserved reputation as someone who shoots from the lip — made it through the first 100 days of the Obama administration without any major gaffes. But on Day 101 the vice president, well, took a nosedive when it came to the government's talking points on air travel during the swine flu outbreak.

At 7:05 a.m. Thursday, Biden was asked on NBC's "Today" show what advice he would give to a family member who was considering flying to Mexico.

"I would tell members of my family — and I have — I wouldn't go anywhere in confined places now," Biden said. "It's not that it's going to Mexico. It's you're in a confined aircraft. When one person sneezes, it goes all the way through the aircraft." Biden went on to say he wouldn't suggest that they ride the subway either.

Avoid all airline travel? Don't ride the subway?

Cue the backpedaling.

At 8:47 a.m., Biden's office put out a statement gamely trying to rewrite the vice president's words:

"The advice he is giving family members is the same advice the administration is giving to all Americans: That they should avoid unnecessary air travel to and from Mexico," said Biden spokeswoman Elizabeth Alexander. "If they are sick, they should avoid airplanes and other confined public spaces, such as subways."

By 10 a.m., Homeland Security chief Janet Napolitano had supplied her own do-over for the VP:

"If he could say that over again, he would say if they're feeling sick they should stay off of public transit or confined spaces because that is indeed the advice that we're giving," Napolitano said on MSNBC.

New York Mayor Michael Bloomberg, who took the subway to work on Thursday, also tried to channel the vice president.

"I think what Joe Biden was talking about was, it is true if you have all these symptoms, we recommend you stay home," Bloomberg said.

White House press secretary Robert Gibbs also tried to close the gap that Biden left between "what he said and what he meant to say."

"If anybody was unduly alarmed for whatever reason, we would apologize for that," Gibbs added.

The people who provide and promote travel on planes and trains were not amused.

There was "extreme disappointment." There was talk of "fearmongering." There was gentle scolding. There was clarification.

For the record, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention's Web site says this: "CDC has NOT recommended that people avoid travel at this time."

It does recommend that people avoid nonessential travel to Mexico, the flu's epicenter, and that those who are sick stay home.

With Biden's track record of impolitic remarks, it was only a matter of time before he found himself trying to eat his words as vice president.

President Barack Obama knew that going in. He praised his running mate's candor and made light of Biden's penchant for "rhetorical flourishes."

When they were still presidential rivals, Biden apologized for describing Obama as "articulate" and "clean," remarks that some thought had racial overtones.

Biden also had to defend his remark that "you cannot go to a 7-Eleven or a Dunkin' Donuts unless you have a slight Indian accent."

He has been surprisingly disciplined since the inauguration — although when he joked about Chief Justice John Roberts flubbing Obama's oath of office, Obama didn't crack a smile.

That's just Joe.

"Sometimes maybe I shouldn't be as straightforward as I am," Biden said Sunday on CBS' "60 Minutes."

"I am who I am."

White House adjusts Biden's swine flu advice
Officials seek to undo the damage after the vice president goes his own way, saying he'd tell family to avoid planes, trains and other enclosed spaces.

....... you can read rest at the link

why the retraction? why the clarification? I thought you said "Biden just speaking for one noe other than himself." (in your own word from post #68)

Are not the Prez and VP getting their information from the CDC and WHO? Are they not basing their opinions and actions on what they learn from the CDC and WHO? Maybe Biden got more insider info than the rest of us? Or maybe he's just paranoid?

Did you all remember he already lost family to an accident?

I think that affected his thinking and his protectiveness to his family now.

Oh, yeah, he's paranoid. That's what it is.

Really, Reba. Stop hijacking threads to demonstrate your hatred of Democratic politicians.

wow.... what an utterly cheap tasteless sucker punch with such comment. You are the only one who are painting this as personal political agenda. In case you didn't notice - White House made retraction and issued the clarification. That alone just invalidated your statement. What just invalidated your hijacking accusation is that I'm a registered Democrat who voted for both Obama & Biden but I agree with Reba. VP Biden misspoke. Plain and Simple.

Yes, I remember that. That could be why he is overly cautious.

People can be contagious prior to ever manifesting symptoms. Asymptomatic persons can be on airplanes. So, obviously, there is a risk of contracting the virus on an airplane. Biden simply advised his family to avoid that risk. His choice. Anyone who wants to take that risk is welcome to decide differently.

Bold statements.... They are just announcing their opinions! I rather to gather the facts, and and rely on that.

With out all the political B.S.! :cool2:

I didn't realize that you'd been made a Mod and judge while I was away from AD.

How is it that any posts or links that are unfavorable to Democrats must mean the posters "hate" Democrats but bashing conservatives is not hateful?

I don't hate Democrats but that doesn't mean I will ignore what they do and say.
