Eradicating deafness

Seems to be the modern trend. Damienmommy has a thread on what is happening with her son.

Wow. "It's interesting because it's a dying culture and it's kind of part of our past now."

We're a dying culture, everyone...don't you feel distinquised? (I know, horrid spelling)

Seriously, the balls of the man. We are still people, for goodness sake. I know he thinks hearing is better, but until he's deaf, he doesn't know what he's talking about. Deaf parents not wanting their deaf children implanted aren't being unkind, as far as I can see. Geez.

Oh dear. Just what we need. I'm not going to tell Deaf parents to implant their children. I can see where they come from.

And many of those CI children may end up like Shel's students. So the deaf school may not close after all. Last time I checked, the Deaf culture is still going strong.

There is nothing wrong with deaf culture or being deaf. This man is simply an audist and places his assumptions on everyone else and he personally believes that deaf culture is 'dying'. I don't think so, I think with the advances in technology to help the deaf communicate, its flourishing more than ever. Deafness will never simply be a 'part of the past'. You can put bilateral implants on a deaf child and turn them on, but when he goes to sleep at night and takes them off, he is still deaf.

Audist pure and simple. This guy is probably a reincarnation of the likes of A.G. Bell. And his theories were proven wrong, too.

*Applaudes Dixie* Good job! Exactly right.

I think Audist is a bad a word as Bast*rd in the deaf community. *Smiles* Anway, you said his theroies were proven wrong? Can you tell me more about that? I mean, which of his theroies...that deafness is a shameful thing, or that CI will completely wipe out deafness?

Google is your friend. And Bell died long before the CI existed!

I meant to ask Jillio what she meant by 'his theroies' because I didn't know which she meant, so I couldn't very well have googled it.

She said AGBells theories were proven wrong. What is confusing ?

Look up AG Bell. I provided you a link on his theories once.

Sheesh! AGBell and his 'Eugenics' cronies would have been proud of this guy.

I was referring to A.G. Bell's theories of genetic transmission of deafness which led to his recommendation that deaf people be sterilized and not allowed to marry each other. Those theories have been proven to be wrong.

So sign language is a dying language. It's only for the older people who are beyond the cochlear implant years now.

 As most of you know I have nothing to do with the hoh/deaf world beside this message board but I was utterly shocked at that sentence because that is so no true! While it might be true that young children have a higher chance of being able to have a *normal* life, I still highly doubt that sign language is a dying language!!!!!!

I'm literally :mad2: at this article... that's all I'm saying ;)

But sadly, that is what many of the older deaf people have been saying too. As cochlear implants become more prevalent and more successful Deaf communities are shrinking.

More so will probably be seen in twenty years when the small children of today are adults.

We have their parents here on this board telling us how the children reject sign in favor of oral.

I can understand that too... but despite this I still think that children should learn sign language, just in case, for future reference or whatever happens in life... They should have both options and have the opportunity later in life to choose what they are most comfortable with.

That's the way I see it and that's the way I would raise my hoh/deaf child :D

There're always people disagreeing, etc. (reason why I'm not too much interested into debates because I don't want to offend somebody)... ;)

Thank you for clarifying, Jillio. I just wasn't sure what you meant.

I read the article in the link and found it degrading and close-minded.
The history of imposing harsh/abusive practices to prohibit ASL among Deaf children in oral programs, and the attempt at denial of ASL and overall Deaf culture by hearing and by outside "professionals" reminds me of terrible history of BIA boarding school.

Oh yes. The abuses going on there is quite breathtaking. They tried to destroy the native cultures via the BIA boarding schools. It's worse than what went on in oral deaf schools. Genocide is still genocide no mater what means are used though.
