For some time, I came to a hypothesis that a good chunk of (D)eaf culture, online, seemingly leans towards a low profile.
This topic is aimed at no one in particular, but the overall aspect of how Deaf society participates online, so hopefully please do not take this as offensive or trespassing.

So I jokingly hand you an ultimatum now that you are here. Why are you invisible (or visible?) if you want to share with us? The poll is anonymous if you choose to participate in that form instead.

There is no purpose in this thread other than to bust myths, gossip & rumors, and quench curiosity.

A lot of it is directed towards the invisible(s) as this is what I feel reflects a portion of the deaf community, although I have no substantiation in adjudicating this.

My hypothesis data

On other major forums, the ratio of invisible users is often at a lesser amount. This is where I show you how I built my hypothesis around this.

Examples off some major or rather, multi-user forums.

The top one is AD. The rest are all other various randomly sampled forums where the online base was captured around the same time frame. The last one doesn't count (as its main purpose for the site for buying things cheap, there is little real social interaction going on) but it's there for comparison purposes.

If you can't make any sense out of above, notice the number of online members: alldeaf is usually around a six to ten times "visible" member to guest+invisible ratio.
Other sites that I have just pasted are nowhere even over five times (for the 3560/15138 one).

(inside joke for those who know what these are ;))

I'm invisible for a reason, if you must know, I might tell you privately nor I might not.

Nah, no one needs to know when i log on or log off. they obviously can see when i post it.

Thanks for those who replied, I am humbled by your presence to the thread.

I'm just saying, that this may be one of the influences that will play an interesting role in the future.
Someone might or will wonder, "How do the treatment of deaf people reflect how they participate on the internet?"
Someone might come across this thread&data on google trying to understand something, and use this as their footstep into another hypothesis.
Maybe even how "deaf people affect their own", or how "deaf want to be seen as".
I can't judge anything but simple data like this paves the way for future hypothesis for other sociologists, researchers.

Either way I believe there is next to little harm in sharing the experience, whether anonymously voting or stepping out of the shadows.
It's all for the sake of hoping that hearing understanding the deaf culture better, and that is what we want, don't we?

If no one shares it, no one will ever know, myths, stereotypes, and rumors will continue to exist.

i'm as visible as statues and posters of NK Dictators. I don't have anything to hide. If you want to stalk me, good luck :cool2:

I guess invisible status comes handy for the admins and moderators. ;)

For me, it doesn't really matter if one wants to be visible or invisible.

I am visible, because I have nothing to hide.. Once a person post. after lurking for a while. Why not... One you post. The name pops up...as a poster.

Voted..dont care. If someone must know when I am online or not, that's their issue, not mine.

I dont really think about this whenever I am on AD.
