Right, there is no Embarq in WNY, that I know for sure.
Have you tried Verizon, Or Frontier?
What I know so far is that in WNY, there is three ISP companies beside wireless and that is Time warner, Verizon, and Frontier.
Please, please avoid Clearwire, as there is no guarantee if you will get best video experience.
To be clear, almost no cable companies have FiOS (Actually they are starting to pop up nowadays), only that I know Verizon offers FiOS.
If you wanted to know which is best for VP? There is NO single answer to this question, it is because it is based on geographic location.
DSL cable is the shortest of all, they can go up to 1,000 feet away from switch or booster before they lose speed. They got limit of 15 hops from the T-1 line, so if the T-1 line is over 15,000 feet away with 15 booster, then the speed drops considerable.
Cable, approximately 5,500 feet away from booster or switch, of course it is better than DSL However I am not sure how may hops they are limited to, so I don't have the answer to this one.
FiOS, can go up to 5 miles without booster or switch! On older FiOS, they are limited to one node, meaning limit of one public IP address, so basically can't have more than 1 VP at same time, but now more and more are offering multi-node so it is good news right no.
So, suppose you had DSL switch only 250 feet away, then that DSL would be best choice, on other hand, if cable switch is say 1,000 feet away, and DSL switch is 1,000 feet away then the cable would be best choice.
So again, it all depends on geographic location.
Believe or not. My friend from New York and he use Clearwire and he have lot problem with it for incoming, lag, etc.. So later New firmware update to 1.7 (updated from Jan) for VP and it's smoothing, incoming work great. no lags anymore.
Yes, we talk a lot thru VP. I noticed it much better with new firmware 1.7 for VP.
