The past few weeks my daughter have been sick. I took her to the doctor for the second time last week. They did blood work. The doctor called me today and told me she tested positive for Mono.

Geez! So she will not be able to play Softball this season. She is heart broken, but the doctor said no Contact sports for 6 to 8 weeks. That just killed her fast pitch softball season.

I have looked up some info on mono. Most of the time the child will recover with no problems. But reading some of this has gotten me worried.

She has all the symptoms and signs of Mono. The Fatigue, headaches and sore throat. The first time I took her to the Doctor she was misdiagnosed as having a throat infection. After taking a series of antibiotics, she was not better. Took her back to the doctor. That is when they did the blood work.

So all we can do is let it take its course. Which can take 6 to 8 weeks for her to actually start feeling less fatigue.

Any one else had this experience?

My son had Mono in high school, and it knocked him out of the last part of his soccer season. He was pissed! He slept a lot, though, to try and recover from the fatigue. I had to remind him to eat, because he was so tired when he got home that he just wanted to go to bed and sleep until the next morning.

He recovered without any complications, and I'm sure your daughter will, too. But I understand your concern. Give her a hug for me.

No. I haven't. my friend did. she felt so exhausted and couldn't eat very well. She had been sleeping and got plenty of rest.

I hope your girl is feeling better. hope she is able to eat okay and get good rest. =(

I had that when I was a kid...I don't remember much. :dunno: I was like only about 3 or 4 years old. I was very sick child. And finally stopped being so sick around 4 and half or so. Just common like colds or flu.

Hope she get better soon! Poor her! :(

I am sure she will also. I am just worried when the doctor mentioned that Mono causes the spleen to enlarge. That is why she can not have any contact sports. Risk of rupturing.

I am having a hard time getting her to eat as well. I made her hamburger gravy over rice. She loves it. Simple but something that I can get her to eat.

I have given her a hug for ya. :)

What makes it harder for her she has FCAT testing this week at her school. I am so glad that she said it was easy and not a big deal.

She is already laying down to sleep.

Yup that is what the Doctor ordered. Plenty or rest and fluids. No Strenuous activities.

Wow that is awfully young to have Mono.

Doctors did tell me that a lot of younger children that get it do not get properly diagnosed. because it is treated like a common cold.

Majority of adults shows antibodies against it already due to exposure, and not knowing they had it as a small child.

Yeah, the spleen enlarges as the mono virus is filtered through. Causes inflammation.

I made the same types of foods for my son. Stuff that was easy to get down and digest, but provided nutrition and calories. I gave him egg custards and puddings too. Easy on the stomach, no energy used in chewing, and high in calories to prevent weight loss.

Bless her heart. Having to be exhausted from the mono, and FCAT, too. Poor kid.

You be sure to take the time to take care of yourself through all of this, too.

I have as well. That is why you all may have noticed that I have not been online much.

LOL she loves boiled peanuts. So I bought her a couple cans of boiled peanuts.

She does eat those like crazy. Sick or not sick. :giggle: Gonna have to get her more of those. She loves juice and Gatorade. So I have no problems getting her to keep fluids.

How long did it take for your son to recover?

I know she will probably be fine. But as a Mother I can not help to worry. :aw:

I have also found some humor in this.

I pick on my daughter, and ask her who has she been "kissing?"

:giggle: Since it is known to be a "kissing disease." She just glares at me and tells me that the doctor told her that she can get it from the public water fountain.

Then we would both laugh.

She did not want to go to school this morning. I told her to just call me when she is done with the FCAT for the day. I will pick her up early from school.

:(

It hurts to see your child, not feeling well.

Thank you all that posted above.

aww, i feel you.. i hate seeing kids being in pain or not feeling. :(

She will feel better before the summer hits! then she will forget the past and move on looking forward to having blast time in the sumer! :)

I had mono just after college - it was actually just after I got my first job! Not a good sign....they had just hired me. But they were pretty understanding. But I was very tired and things just slowed down - and yes, I recall the spleen concern. It does take a while to recover. Many Get Well hugs-

aww, this is new to me... Is it similar as tonsil?

I feel you because it's pain to see your own child suffer... :( but I'm glad that your daughter is okay.

It was about 4 weeks before I noticed much improvement in his energy levels, and about 8 weeks before he resumed all of his normal activity.

Yep...the kissing disease because the virus is carried in the saliva. I teased my son as well, and got a "MOOOOOM!" and a frowny face every time. Since there were several kids who had it, I told him that they had to stop having kissing fests after school.:giggle:

:giggle: thanks for the skill parenting on how to say it to kiddos.

:P

Good parents have to pick on their children every now and then. To keep them on their toes. That is good parenting skills. :giggle:
Just like when I drop my daughter off at school I will shout. "I love you" she turns red as a beet.

Jillio.

The virus is in the salvia. But I wonder how long is she contagious. I have not seen any info on that. Surely she isn't for 6 to 8 weeks.

No. The catagious period is before symptoms even begin to appear. That is why it passes so easily. No one realizes that the person shedding the live virus is sick, including the person themselves.

Did the doctor do any blood work on you to check for antibodies to see if you had already had mono at some point but were never diagnosed? I know a good portion of the adult population carries antibodies, and aren't even aware that they had ever had mono. Same with CMV. Both are often mistaken for other things, like a case of the flu.

My son used to turn beet red at the "Give your mommy a kiss!" when I dropped him off at school! But try not doing it for one day, and the first thing they want to know is "Why didn't you kiss me good-bye?" They secretly love it!
