Superdog invents own sign language to help deaf owner - The Sunday Mail

PET pooch Guiness came to the rescue when his owner went deaf - by inventing his own sign language.

The clever canine taps Beneta Brown with his paw and nods towards the source of any noise.

Incredibly, Guiness has never been trained as a hearing dog and came from a rescue centre.

Beneta, 32, of Kirkcaldy, said: "Since taking him home my hearing degenerated dramatically.

He's become my ears.

"Guiness is a constant help around the house. He hears the everyday sounds I don't, like the door bell and timer onmy cooker.

"When someone is at the door he puts his paw on my knee and nods towards it to let me know.

"When I left the tap running he told me about it with a paw and nodded to the bathroom.

"He wouldn't stop until I understood what he was telling me.

If he wants me to see something he'll point.

"And if someone tries to getmy attention outside he letsme know by stopping dead and looking in their direction. Guiness has not been trained as a hearing dog - it's all instinct.

"I think it is also gratitude. He's affectionate and supportive and he means the world to me."

Guiness, a Border collie/German shepherd cross, was abandoned by his owner and found wandering the streets of Glasgow by the SSPCA.

Accountancy student Beneta, who still has a little hearing and wears hearing aids, said: "I can't express enough gratitude to the SSPCA for lettingme take Guiness home."

SSPCA Chief Superintendent Mike Flynn said: "The most rewarding part of working for the SSPCA is seeing an animal find a loving new home.

"It is particularly special when a bond as strong as this is formed and a rescue animal becomes not only excellent company but also such a vital part of its owner's life.

"Guiness is clearly devoted to Beneta and they're a perfectmatch for each other."

Wow... I'm pretty impressed... kind of like your own Lassie... (no offense). I'm only pointing this out since Guiness wasn't trained! Smart dog :)

I am happy to see the story, but I think all dogs do that. My dogs alert me to everything.

I think it is instinct.

That's a nice story, but I have to agree with Bott. My service dog didn't learn much when I tried specifically training him to alert me to the oven timer, but he clearly alerts me when someone calls my name or the doorbell rings.
