I'm bit surprised that you were not aware of Singapore's corporal punishment because there was a huge huge news about it in 1994. The American student got caned bad in Singapore for vandalism (spray painting). USA government had to intervened to plead for leniency. He got caned 4x instead of 6.

Oh yes that boy! He cried because he didn't want to be caned.. got his mummy and daddy involved then the whole big bad country of U . S of A involved but nope.. he had to be caned!

i have to tell you - Singapore's caning is.... very harsh. they did technique to maximize the pain by wetting your arse and using thinner stick. Depending on each individual - your buttock skin actually rips after 2 strikes. They have doctor on standby to check the wound after each strike. After receiving 5+ strikes (depending on crime)... the person is unable to walk/sit/etc. for few weeks to several weeks. Spitting gum on sidewalk does warrant caning punishment.
