the emoticons are in text format, silly. for example - when you used :confused: "confused" emoticon... it comes out like this -

exactly. the name of each emoticon appears in text format which is what i use to identify them.

i can also create an emoticon by typing ":g-i-g-g-l-e:" or ":l-a-u-g-h-2:".

i've been on ad since january of 2005, so it's really not difficult to memorize how each emoticon is made (i.e. typed).
 
I read the whole thread here... :shock: and very interesting thread here... It's good education for me... I know quite a lot about hearing and blind people but a little about deafblind... I only know is Helen Keller...

I'm very sorry about the loss of your beloved sister to heart attack. :( How old is she? I know how you feeling because I also lost my one year younger sister to drug overdose at 2 years ago, too...

It's very interesting to learn about Screen reader, window-eyes, trallie, etc. but it's shame that you can't see the picture...

i know what you mean about establishing trust with someone who isn't a certified terp. someone who used to serve as my ssp was also a tactile terp for me at medical appointments. i always preferred using her because she knew what my needs were, my communication preference (tactile pse) and understood how to act around a dbp (deafblind person). no offense to certified terps, but some of them are too "formal" for my liking. i like terps who are laid back and who like to joke around a bit.

i also think all restaurants should provide a braille menu. i know mcdonald's does, but i'm not sure about others. to get around this, i check restaurant menus online so i know what to order.

Hi, I am back. I apologize for not replying you the other day. I was passed out while I read your message after I noticed my visions were blurred but I am OK now. I just called my PCP's office for an appointment. I have an appointment with my PCP later this afternoon.
Yeah, I know what you mean. I am laid back and I always joke around with my consumers, too. Smile! We had a lot of fun. So, I am looking forward to working with them again.
What a great idea?! I never thought about that. I will tell my former consumers about checking the restaurant menus online and so, they can order. (My former consumers and I still email each other!) :)

There is breyer's brand I think or whatever that have A&W root beer ice cream.

I hate cotton ball texture because they sort of crinkle when moving it around with fingers EW. Jiro I can't stand worm too lol.

What was your first clear understanding of things like first big "ohhh!" moment for example helen keller and water she understood the connection to sign and water.
Mine was when I was 6 when I understood what deaf mean like that my ears is "broken" and I talk with my hands and listen with my eyes when other people don't and that they listen with their ears and talk in spoken language so my shyness and confusion is gone and started to play with other kids without communicating like playing tag, swimming together, etc.

Is there any horrible encounter with stranger toward your disability like trip you or grab your cane away from you or something mean to confuse you?
Mine was only with my brothers not strangers they used to cover my eyes and take hearing aid off and take me to someplace usually closet and lock me in there lol meanie we were little kids back then

yes. definitely let your consumers know about checking for restaurant menus online. that's what i do and it works extremely well for me because i can download the information onto my braillenote and read the menu while i'm in the restaurant.

believe it or not, when i think, i think in visual concepts (i.e. words). i imagine "pictures" in my mind in terms of how things feel tactually and their relation to me in space. when i think of words, i think of how they appear in grade II (contracted) braille. when people describe how objects look to me, i like to know their size, texture and how their color relates to a given emotion (hope that makes sense).

when i was ashley's age, i was sensitive to food and textures. i was also a very picky eater which my mother thinks is due to the fact that i was so overly sensitive to how foods tasted in my mouth, so my aversion to certain textures and oversensitivity to foods has been something i've been dealing with for as long as i can remember.

the first "ohhh!" moment i had was in kindergarten. i was sitting at a table reading a braille book when suddenly another classmate of mine came up from behind and placed their hand on the braille i was reading. then they asked, "what are those bumps?" after i explained that it was braille, he asked me why i didn't read print like he did. i asked my itinerant teacher why i couldn't read print and that's when she told me i was blind and that blind people read braille while sighted people read print. needless to say, i was crushed because at the time, i thought everyone in the world was blind. lol.

yes, i've had my fair share of classmates trip me and deliberately step on my cane. this used to happen to me all the time in elementary school. fortunately, neither of these things happen to me any longer and i've never had a stranger threaten to take away my cane.

lol!!!!! sorry but I laughed about your comment that you thought everybody was blind. Oh don't you love the youth's naivete? Just like my friend thought the baby comes out of belly button and I thought baby comes out of butt LOL!

among your siblings - are you the only one with disability? My brother and I are HOH but he has much better hearing than me. Mine's just slowly getting worse and worse.

i'm the only one with a physical disability. my sister who passed away used to have diabetes and severe asthma. all of my sisters are sighted-hearing.

however, one of my sisters is completely deaf in one ear due to an eardrum perforation when she was a child.

i'm confused. if your brother has profound loss and you have severe-profound loss, wouldn't your brother have worse hearing (according to your audiograms)?

What? No profound is worse than severe-profound.
Ok estimated level of hearing
Supersonic 0-15
Normal 15-25
Mild 26-40
Moderate 41-60
Severe 61-89
Profound 90+
NR (no reponse) unmeasureable

So if you're severe-profound it more likely you have ski slope hearing loss low frequency starting at severe level and high frequency drop to profound level. Your brother hear all frequency in profound level
