Ex-first lady Barbara Bush recovering after surgery
Ex-first lady Barbara Bush recovering after surgery - CNN.com

Former first lady Barbara Bush was resting comfortably Wednesday after undergoing "routine" surgery Tuesday night to correct a perforated ulcer, according to Methodist Hospital in Houston, Texas.

Surgeons patched and closed a one-centimeter hole in Bush's stomach caused by the ulcer, the hospital said in a news release Wednesday.

Bush, 83, is expected to be discharged next week, it said.

She was taken to the hospital Tuesday evening for tests after complaining of stomach pain for several days, said a family spokeswoman, Jean Becker.

After she began feeling ill, Bush called her husband, former President George H.W. Bush, at his office to ask him to take her to the hospital. His Secret Service detail drove them both to the hospital, Becker said.

Bush has been diagnosed with the thyroid condition Graves' disease. It was not known whether the condition had any relation to her hospitalization on Tuesday.

The mother of President George W. Bush, Barbara Bush was first lady from 1989 to 1993.

Born Barbara Pierce in New York in 1925, she married her husband in 1945. She is a distant cousin of Franklin Pierce, who served as president from 1853 to 1857.

Former first lady Barbara Bush was hospitalized in Houston, Texas, Tuesday after suffering pain during the week, according to reports.

Family spokesman Jim McGrath told the Associated Press that Mrs. Bush, 83, went to Methodist Hospital and underwent tests, which came out negative. The specifics of the tests were not revealed, but she'd been having stomach pains for several days.

On Good Morning America Wednesday, Mrs. Bush's daughter-in-law, Laura Bush, said, "She's doing great."

The current first lady also said she was in touch with the elder Mrs. Bush. "George and I talked to both President Bush and Barbara Bush last night while they were in the hospital and they were both doing very well then," she said.

She added that the White House doctor spoke to Mrs. Bush's doctor "and she's doing very well and so we're really, really thankful."

McGrath told The Houston Chronicle that Mrs. Bush was expected to be released Wednesday.

Well, as she said about the victims of Hurricane Katrina as they were being housed in the stadium:

"What is the problem? She has a roof over her head."

She also said "Why should we hear about body bags and death? Oh, I mean it is not relevant. So why should I waste my beautiful mind on something like that?"
I won't waste any more space over her.

Exactly. Why should she be shown empathy when she demonstrated such a lack of such? I'm much more concerned about the sick people in this country who can't afford the medical care they need.

She said those?!!! I didn't know that.

She must have had a blow job with her favorite doctor at the hospital. She knew that her husband had an affair when he was in Australia. (Surely, she might have paid her boyfriend handsome.) I didn't forget that one in the magazine.

*shaking head in disgust* unbelievable.

now there's a perfect example of someone who shows compassion for others. NOT. :mad2:

i think it's sad that a former first lady can have such a lack of empathy towards others who need/deserve it. :mad2: this is how Nancy Reagan shows her appreciation towards citizens who rallied around her after her husband was nearly assassinated in 1981, diagnosed with alzheimer's and later succombed to his illness? :nono:

She may be classy in public but she don't strike me as being nice to others.

oops. i was too quick to react. this article is talking about barbara bush -- not nancy reagan. i was confused because i recently heard on the news that nancy reagan was hospitalized. hence, my confusion. however, my comments about her (barbara bush) lack of empathy and sensitivity still stand.

the only thing i can give barbara bush credit for is strengthening reading programs and monetary support for public libraries around the country.

I didn't know about this one. That was nice of her to do that.

In another subject, she is very quiet person all the times. One thing that I don't understand that she knew that her husband had the affair. She would have mad at him when she found out about it, but she is not willing to do it. She just keep herself quietly. That's pretty strange. That's all.
