OMG!!!! This country is in trouble. The American people are so stupid that a majority elected a foreign born Muslim socialist Marxist who associates with known terrorists!:Ohno: And he's BLACK!:run: He wants to take away guns and kill babies!

:laugh2:

Lowercase is no problem; I prefer that to uppercase "shouting", ha, ha. :P

I hope your hand feels better soon. :)

I believe Obama and Ayers had similar political viewpoints before they even met. Otherwise, Ayers wouldn't have supported him. Ayers, as the older, more experienced politico and teacher, enforced and deepened Obama's convictions and direction. I believe Ayers also opened some doors to further associations and mentoring.

:giggle:

Thanks, Reba for your comments about my hand and for the explanation regarding Ayers. :)

Are you talking about Ayers being a sponsor for Obama? What is more realistic: Ayers being a sponsor for Obama or being a sponsor for McCain....
Ayers hosted the beginning of Obama's political career for State Senator in 1995. It was the house Ayers and fellow Weatherman Bernadine Dohrn that Obama was introduced to the Chicago area politicians. It had nothing to do with McCain.

Sigh. If Obama gives him a pardon, would that lay the whole matter to rest?

Why would Obama pardon someone who has done no wrong? :D

Anyway, technically, Ayers wasn't convicted so there is nothing to pardon.

Hmmm. Good point.
So only a guilty party can be pardoned?

BTW, how is your hand now?

thanks for asking, reba. :) i woke up this morning with all of my fingers numb and my hand still hurts. i've been typing one-handed (right hand) all day. i've made up my mind to have surgery, but will have physical therapy until my surgery date. i'm supposed to wear a splint (which i'm wearing right now), but unfortunately, it's not doing anything to help the pain.

Goodness Hear Again, I am sorry to hear of quite an itch! The more coathanger I get, the more I am in trouble, lol. I dislike casts, ahem.

Oh, a splint, not a cast.
Guess I put my foot into my mouth again, lol. Whoops, sorry Hear Again.

Ouch!

I hope your surgery brings good results for you.

I'm sorry to hear about this. I hope your surgery goes well.

Yeah. If a person isn't legally guilty there is nothing to pardon.

You sure? Nixon wasn't convicted of federal crimes, yet Ford pardoned him in 1974. Bush Sr. pardoned secretary of defense Casper Weinberger (who was not yet convicted) in 1992 (apprarently because the hearing against him next month may have revealed the crime of drug importation in the Iran-Contra affair.
Heck, even the present Bush pardoned himself against future war crimes.

He at least has the courage of his convictions, and his motives were far from self serving. I wish we saw more of that character in people today. His actions may have been questionable, but his motives certainly weren't, nor was he afraid to actually take action for a cause he truly believed in.
The same could be said for abortion clinic bombers.

I'm looking into that. I spoke to a lawyer friend tonight. Presidential pardons aren't his specialty but he said as far as he knew, a person who is pardoned either has to have been convicted or at least indicted of a crime in order to receive a pardon.

Here's what President Ford said:

"Now, therefore, I, Gerald R. Ford, President of the United States, pursuant to the pardon power conferred upon me by Article II, Section 2, of the Constitution, have granted and by these presents do grant a full, free, and absolute pardon unto Richard Nixon for all offenses against the United States which he, Richard Nixon, has committed or may have committed or taken part in during the period from July (January) 20, 1969 through August 9, 1974."

From the rest of Ford's text, it appears that this pardon was a preemptive pardon, made to avoid a trial that was possibly to come.

Gerald Ford's Remarks on Signing the Nixon Pardon Proclamation

So, I stand corrected. In addition to convicted and indicted criminals, Presidents can pardon citizens who are facing possible indictment but haven't actually been indicted.

However, I still don't think Ayers fits any of those categories. As far as I know, he's not facing an indictment for his crimes. Any attempt at a pardon now would only stir up indignation by his supporters against anyone implying Ayers had some wrong doing in his life that required pardoning.
