Hey all, I'm "new" here. Was a member of this forum in 2001-200... 3? Then I departed for other avenues.
Now I'm back, with a video I made.
It shows the flaws in the American system of facing Deaf people:
[ame=http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lpXy-UI-o4w&fmt=18]YouTube - You neutral?[/ame]
Now that Barack Obama is our President-elect, he has some things on his agenda that you would be VERY interested in as deaf American citizens.
1. His top disability policy advisor is Tom Harkin. Harkin wrote and sponsored the ADA. Tom's brother is deaf and quite intelligent. Tom feels the ADA isn't enough. It was Tom who wrote up the four bulletpoints, the four priorities for Obama's disability page (Barack Obama and Joe Biden: The Change We Need | Disabilities , see bottom).
2. Apparently Obama knows sign language, Enough to carry on a basic conversation. See the 2nd half of this Jack's Eyes Vlog: [ame=http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=p1WD-Qf1mqg]YouTube - FDR and Obama[/ame]
So.... Regardless of your political alignment, we deaf people need to get together and show the incoming Obama Administration what is wrong with how America treats and manages its deaf citizens.
I believe that visual (sign) language is equal to verbal language. Both have their pros and cons. Both are equally powerful and beautiful in expressing meaning.
I believe that deaf people are more than just "disabled" people. We have language and culture, a big difference from other forms of disability. We cannot just be "bunched" with other forms of disability under the same umbrella.
Unfortunately, the world does not know nor believe the above two points.
I believe that our time is now to preserve our Deaf heritage and unique language and make the world better for ourselves and future generations of Deaf people -
- we have a President-elect that is open and intelligent. He's not dumb. He apparently knows sign. He has a cool disability advisor.
So are you gonna let Obama be another "ordinary" President?
Or would you help us push Obama into being an extraordinary President for us Deaf people?
Help out! Email people on the Obama team. See the following link for an example of how to do this: ReunifyGally
Let your Deaf friends and families know. We can't just let the Obama Administration go to waste through apathy. We need to let the Obama Administration know that we're watching them. We need to have deeper discussion on how to resolve how America treats its Deaf citizens.
From what I see it, there are three general directions in which the Deaf community in America is going. See the picture I attached below... just for discussion's sake
