US Could Face a Hearing Loss Epidemic

I am not surprised, especially caused by very loud music through iPods, etc.

Not only USA but world-wide.

Yeah, I cannot say I am surprised either. I cannot believe why people feel a need to shake their whole cars with their bass. Or share their music from their ear buds with the whole waiting room... Theatre's are no help either, I actually take earplugs to the movies and I hear just fine as though I were watching tv at home.

I wanted to add here that I wish they would put closed captioning in the movies regularly. Despite having no one deaf/hard of hearing living in our home we always have closed captioning on the television and I've come to much prefer watching tv this way.

The hearing aid store owners are dreaming of big bucks.....

:laugh2::laugh2:

All I can say is..."oh well"

I have no pity cuz I suffered enough in the hands of the oralists..maybe it is time for them to suffer and see what it is like to try to be "heairng" with a hearing loss.

And/or the great news are for the cochlear implant corporations.

Whatever makes these late deafened people happy, great! Why not!

I know that these people wouldnt be interested in ASL and the Deaf community and that's ok. It is the deaf babies that I worry about...

Maybe not.... Loud noises aren't enough to cause severe to profound deafness. That is why I said only hearing aid store owners.

Really? Loud noises arent enough to cause severe to profound deafness? I guess I am ignorant on that one....hmmmm.

I know that. I am not surprise. I talked to my husband because he have his own ipod apple. He never have problem with it. He said the original white earphone is lousy! It can cause hearing loss easy. Because too loud music. The most teenager kids like to listen the loud and didn't know how to careful with volume limited. My husband bought his own koss or sony earphone to prevent of noisy in background and too loud. He didn't like the white original belong to Apple Ipod. He would like to get earmold for ipod. It cost 200 dollars. He is not ready for it yet.

I lost most of mine in the military-occupational hazard, but I am being helped by the Veterans Administration. One thing they meantioned in the article that cought my attention was the depression part. I too suffer from depression because of my hearing loss but I am looking for natural ways to heal or fix it without becoming dependant on medication, so far I have mixed results. What are your thoughts on this?

Depression is often secondary to the adjustment to any form of disability. It is a part of the adjustment process and the life changes that are inherent. Generally, medication is not necessary to treat this, as it is considered to be situational, not clinical, depression.

Have you tried support groups? Since the VA is handling your case, have they assigned you a rehab counselor familiar with hearing loss?

Thanks, I forgot about that option. I did ask the audioligists(spelling?) if he know of any support grouips and he said he would get back to me.

If lacks of rubella vaccine then deaf babies would be skyrocketing again.

Suggestion of support groups is a great option.

I have found with my anxiety that expression is a great way to relieve depression. I actually have found that signing is one way, for me at least, to relieve stress. the active motion of expressing oneself with the whole body just seems to be of relief.

I also do some free writing. Take something that is on your mind and just write where ever it takes you. Many times I end up off topic, start out talking about say the homeless I see on the streets and end up talking about some of my friends. I use to try to stick with one topic but it is restraining. Hobbies help too. Something that requires some focus like drawing or making a model is a great way to escape feelings about life for a little bit and just enjoy the moment of what you are doing.

Me, too the same.

If the audiologist can't find you one, check with one of the therapists at the VA. And, you're welcome! Support groups can be very helpful in some situations, and adjustment to disability is one of those situations.

I am sorry to hear. My husband's uncle was in Army at Vietnam. He got hearing loss about 70db. He got a hearing aids from Veterans Administration. It's help him a lot. If you want to get a hearing aids. VA will pay it for you.

Why not make volume knobs that can't be turned too high? I also feel vibrations in my desk sometimes and my ears ring. I recorded the noise and my landlord thinks it could be the very loud motorcycle someone next door has, so he'll listen to my recordings.

Why do people put mufflers on their cars and motorcycles that are not quiet enough?

I got HA for free since VA paid it, it was back in 1989 when my dad was in military service.

I still have like that and still work so good but design seems very old technology and little bulky.
