A Dozen Fun Facts About the House Democrats' Massive Spending Bill

1. The House Democrats' bill will cost each and every household $6,700 additional debt, paid for by our children and grandchildren.

2. The total cost of this one piece of legislation is almost as much as the annual discretionary budget for the entire federal government.

3. President-elect Obama has said that his proposed stimulus legislation will create or save three million jobs. This means that this legislation will spend about $275,000 per job. The average household income in the U.S. is $50,000 a year.

4. The House Democrats' bill provides enough spending - $825 billion - to give every man, woman, and child in America $2,700.

5. $825 billion is enough to give every person living in poverty in the U.S. $22,000.

6. $825 billion is enough to give every person in Ohio $72,000.

7. Although the House Democrats' proposal has been billed as a transportation and infrastructure investment package, in actuality only $30 billion of the bill - or three percent - is for road and highway spending. A recent study from the Congressional Budget Office said that only 25 percent of infrastructure dollars can be spent in the first year, making the one year total less than $7 billion for infrastructure.

8. Much of the funding within the House Democrats' proposal will go to programs that already have large, unexpended balances. For example, the bill provides $1 billion for Community Development Block Grants (CDBG), which already have $16 billion on hand. And, this year, Congress has plans to rescind $9 billion in highway funding that the states have not yet used.

9. In 1993, the unemployment rate was virtually the same as the rate today (around seven percent). Yet, then-President Clinton's proposed stimulus legislation ONLY contained $16 billion in spending.

10. Here are just a few of the programs and projects that have been included in the House Democrats' proposal:

- $650 million for digital TV coupons.
- $6 billion for colleges/universities - many which have billion dollar endowments.
- $166 billion in direct aid to states - many of which have failed to budget wisely.
- $50 million in funding for the National Endowment of the Arts.
- $44 million for repairs to U.S. Department of Agriculture headquarters.
- $200 million for the National Mall, including grass planting.
- $400 million for "National Treasures."

11. Almost one-third of the so called tax relief in the House Democrats' bill is spending in disguise, meaning that true tax relief makes up only 24 percent of the total package - not the 40 percent that President-elect Obama had requested.

12. $825 billion is just the beginning - many Capitol Hill Democrats want to spend even more taxpayer dollars on their "stimulus" plan.
So this stimulus package is currently $825,000,000,000 ($825 billion) and growing. The estimated 2009 deficit is $1,200,000,000,000 ($1.2 trillion) (Main Homepage Feature: January 7). Oh, and that figure does not include the stimulus package. President Bush got a lot of criticism for excessive spending and running up the debt, and rightfully so. However, his largest deficit was $455,000,000,000 ($455 billion). We're talking about nearly triple that before this "stimulus".

Currently, our national debt is $11,000,000,000,000 ($11 trillion). Our real national debt, which includes future entitlement obligations is up to $56,400,000,000,000 ($56.4 trillion). I explained what all that means in this thread: http://www.alldeaf.com/war-politica...y-stuff-every-american-should-know-about.html

Is this bill really what we need?

just like former president george w. bush's stimulus package from last year??

if one is going to criticize the democrats for creating a stimulus package, the same criticism must also be directed at george w. bush.

Hear Again, this isn't about some silly Bush vs. Obama game. This is much more serious than that. We're talking about burying future generations in almost unimaginable debt. We're talking about a huge government spending spree disguised as an economic stimulus. It appears to be an attempt to take advantage of a crisis to increase government control over the economy. This is the same sort of thing that was tried in the 30s and failed.

A stimulus needs to be fast to be effective. The Congressional Budget Office says that of the $358 billion currently set aside for infrastructure repair, only $26 billion would be spent by the end of this year and only $110 billion would be spent in 2010. In other words, by the time the money comes, it'll be too late. If their only interest is in fixing the infrastructure, they should pass an infrastructure bill and not disguise it as a stimulus package. If they're truly interested in giving the economy a jolt, they could just cut taxes. That would be felt immediately.

For the record, I did oppose the Bush stimulus package, even though I was the recipient of a $600 check. However, this is very different. That one cost around $160 billion. We're talking about at least five times that much. Even some Democrats are feeling uneasy about the size of this thing. And with the Bush stimulus, they just sent out checks to everyone. It wasn't super quick, but it was mostly finished in a matter of months.

Ugh, I don't think that plan will jumpstart the economy as it failed under bushs plan. Im not too sure about that and its way a lot of money compared to clinton admin only spend 16 billion that time.

given the extremely poor state of our economy, there is no feasible way that obama can institute a stimulus package asap.

I'm a bit wary of a stimulus package whose true cost will be over three and a quarter trillion dollars; whose size is probably greater than the world's GNP, and the strings attached for States which take their share seem illegal as those conditions seem to infringe on States' rights and their budget processes in the future.

I think its a little different now, Byrdie, in that there's gonna be shifting, globally, in acquisition of power, etc and that we seem to be at the abyss. Not to be a scare-mongerer but....

I see it as more Republican whining since they would rather stand in the way of any real solution than solve this problem.

Their goal is to see Obama fail and nothing more.

I bet that "email" is fake. I didn't see it on Snopes but it will probably end up there soon because people will post anything that they see/get as truth.

And that is based on what?

And that is based on what?

Well, for one thing, what's new to me is having never before seen our economy affecting the entire world....
