Not Deaf, just a fan of ASL...

@Bebonang: I link to RomaSign.com in my original post. There's no need to paste that text in here, especially since the handshape font doesn't come across. Also, the site includes a searchable dictionary, which is important for something like this. The basic spelling rules can be laid out, but a...

Yes, @Bottesini, @Eater_of_Worlds was talking to me. But I am an outsider not fit to defend myself against such attacks here. @hoichi sees the value of my work and is trying to help me out. In case you were wondering, I've spent countless hours studying the structure of ASL: how handshapes...

@monievargas: I'm 'mrcliffjones' on Skype, but I'm not sure how much help I'd be as a conversation partner right now. I would probably make your signing worse. :) Still, I plan to improve once my work situation calms down a bit, so yeah, let's be in touch.

@Bebonang: Who said anything about me using RomaSign with my brother? My brother can't read, so that wouldn't make any sense. RomaSign is simply a written form of ASL, not a different language.

@ceptxj: No, I'm not currently involved in any community whatsoever (unless you count the Internet). I work from home as a developer and spend my free time with my wife and daughter. @Anij: Are you saying I'd just fingerspell "Cliff"? Mostly I want to know how to refer to myself in ASL so I...

Sorry. I certainly didn't intend any cultural misappropriation. I'm just a busy guy with no time for a social life, and I haven't happened to receive a name sign yet. RomaSign is the only system of its kind that I'm aware of, and as a naive non-Deaf person, I feel that it has value. Forget my...

    Best ASL dictionary?

I'm not fluent in ASL, but I've devised a writing system for it (RomaSign), and I'm working on populating a small online dictionary. So far, I've been using The American Sign Language Handshape Dictionary by Tennant and Brown (of Gallaudet). I thought that would be pretty authoritative and a...

    ASL only!!!

Hahaha, sorry! You have to click the RomaSign link for an explanation. It's a way to write ASL without English glosses or new symbols. I was just trying out the system a little (and I've actually made a few corrections in my wording since your reply). Pwoho itwom oguhai. :giggle: ("Sorry I weird.")

Other systems Yes, I'm familiar with si5s, and several other systems, but I don't believe they address the problems I tackled with RomaSign. The system I found to be the most user-friendly was ASLphabet, but it requires a special font and yields way too many homographs for my liking.

Hi, I'm a linguist living in El Paso Texas. I haven't really had much interaction with the Deaf community, but my brother is severely autistic and semi-verbal, and we've tried some signing with him. Mostly, I just love language, and I'm particularly fascinated by the phonology of signed...

    Romasign

Yeah, I thought of that being a possible confuser, but since "Roma" really just means "people" (related to human/homo/homme/etc.), I figured it's still not a bad name. Finding a decent ".com" address is tough work. :)

    Romasign

Thanks for posting this! Hi, I'm the creator of the system, totally new to the forum, and somewhat of a stranger to the Deaf community. The only real signing I've done has been trying to teach my semi-verbal autistic brother a little, without much success. I do have a master's degree in...
