So, what is a contingency plan?

It is often called a "back up" plan for when things go wrong. Do you have a plan for an emergency such as a tornado, hurricane, flood, earthquake, etc. etc.?

I have been thinking about contingency plans for quite some time. I am not the kind of person who lives in fear of things, but rather, the kind of person who likes to be prepared for when and if SHTF. :cool2:

For some time, I have been reading about the turn of events in Iran and North Korea. I have been reading statements made by Newt Gingrich (he was my former teacher) concerning the potential for there to be an EMP strike against the United States.

Newt Gingrich: EMP From One Nuke Could Destroy America | Right Soup

Now, this may sound like pure lunacy to some people. But high-altitude electromagnetic pulse (HEMP) device is absolutely destructive, and here is why:

Electromagnetic pulse - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

It makes anything that uses electricity inoperable. This means that your car's ignition will not work. You cannot use your computer to communicate, you cannot refrigerate food (food will rot in grocery stores ... people will starve). Your flashlights will not work at night. Emergency rescue workers will also not be able to use resources to help people. It would be pandemonium, with people looking for water and food. Things would get violent.

The United States Military has a contingency plan in case of an EMP strike. They have protected electronics in their vehicles and bases for such a strike.

However, the average citizen will have no electricity.

Do you have a contingency plan in case this were to ever happen?

What would you do? Do you live in the city, or the country? Do you know how to hunt and fish for food? How many things do you know how to do to survive if you absolutely had to? Would you know where to look for water, what kind of water is safe to drink? How many different plant variations can you identify?

I just thought this would be an interesting topic to discuss, it may be educational for us all.

Being deaf or HoH also means that CI and hearing aids will not work. How would we communicate with the hearing in the event of an emergency?

I believe I am quite prepared to some degree... certainly better than average population. It helped a great deal that I am a half-mountain, half-city person. I spent a lot of time doing outdoor stuff, learning how to use different vehicles and weapons. I know some survival skills. and I have a very effective weapon available at my disposal at any time.

You have to keep in mind that almost all vehicles will be inoperable, and people will group up into gang like packs for protection.

If your in the city, it would be the most dangerous place to be. These gangs will go house to house looking for food and water.

I am just trying to keep this hypothetical speaking ... not trying to say "boo" just letting people think about what they could do if a situation like this ever happened ... and hopefully, come up with a good contingency plan.

btw - flashlight will work

No. EMP will not affect batteries. EMP affects sensitive electronics equipment, especially those with chip circuitry, because silicone scips are voltage-sensitive. EMP, such as that caused by a nuclear detonation, induces MUCH more than the 5 volts required to operate a chip!

But, you flashlight batteries in the drawer by the bed will be just fine.

I did not know that ... :hmm: I wonder if the circuitry in a hearing aid would be effected?

any device with circuit board like capacitor, chip, resistor, etc. will not work. Flashlight is a simple on-off device powered by battery. Battery is a simple chemical device.

Any device left running on battery/electricity... it will be rendered useless after EMP burst. But I'm not exactly sure about this - if any device is not attached to any power (as in - it has zero charge), it will not be damaged from EMP burst. I'm not sure....

*shrug* that's fine. Mr. Remington is waiting for them. and I already have a whole equipment like water purifier pump, portable stove, etc. etc.

Nah...

I am already lived like one for awhile before I got enough money to buy electronics again.

Where I live, I can see the community coming together and helping each other out.

However, can the same thing be said for inner cities? Once people start leaving the cities for the country, what would happen?

lol so it's like Jericho :)

That's about like where I live. Not exactly a farming community (that's right up the road).

North Korea to abandon disarmament over U.S. exercises - CNN.com

North Korea said Sunday it would no longer move forward with nuclear disarmament in response to a planned U.S.-South Korean joint military exercise.
The announcement was made by the official Korean Central News Agency, or KCNA.
"The maneuvers clearly indicate once again that the U.S. and the South Korean authorities are the harassers of peace and warmongers keen to bring a war to this land," the statement said.

Their last missile test had something attached to it that intelligence analysts said was a dummy EMP. North Korea said it was a weather satellite.

which is why I keep telling people to ignore ANYTHING relating to North Korea. Please stop giving them attention that Kim Jong-Il wants

We Koreans do absolutely nothing about it whenever NK or Kim Jong-Il makes a stink because it's same old bluff story but we Koreans get amused at ya'all Americans getting all :hyper: over anything NK does. We are just waiting for North Korea to crumble down piece by piece and it's only matter of time till Kim Jong-Il's men go against him.

I hope you are right

I had a friend years ago that was in the S. Korean Army as a photographer journalist. I lost contact with him, but we used to play golf together. He explained to me that N. Korea builds massive tunnels near the border because they plan to invade again.

I am more concerned with Iran though. Will Israel do anything?

Other than that ... if the SHTF, what would you do? That is sort of what I would like to discuss ... What kind of a working plan do you have in mind?

Sort of like ... step by step plan - how would you travel? Where would you travel to? Where and how would you communicate, find shelter, food, water etc.?

Just a quick example:

Water Procurement for Survival

I hope you are right
we are pretty certain that we are :) After all - look at past years since Korean War on how many times NK makes a stink like this. All talk and no action

eh old news. we already found it and closed it off. beside - North Korea would already be dust if NK invades again. seriously..... look at what NK has in its arsenal... and then compare to what we have for them. :cool2:

Beside - the echelon group wouldn't even allow Kim Jong-Il to do this suicide mission.

I am more concerned with Iran though. Will Israel do anything?
yes that is a more pressing concern. much more than North Korea. North Korea shouldn't even be on threat list because it's insignificant. I wouldn't worry too much about Iran because of our vast advantages over them.

eh just stick around at my condo. it's much more defensible than home. just fill your bathtub and sink with water (Waterbob) and have guns/ammo ready. and have some dry food too. I already have dozens of camping equipments in case we need more supplies like water. Just need enough to survive for 1-2 weeks cuz it's how long the government & military will arrive to secure everything.

I have a large storage bins full of dried foods, water, blankets, extra clothes, batteries, and other stuff. I have a tent, sleeping bags, and gas portable stove.

A good percentage of them won't even make it out of their high-rise buildings much less beyond the city limits.
