I drive past a "Deaf Child" road sign on my way to school and I was wondering if there is an adverse affect of these signs on the self-esteem of deaf children living in the area. Do they feel embarrassed that the sign is broadcasting that they are deaf to every car that drives through?

I myself didn't have one of these signs posted nearby. But did know a few people who did. My Aunt & Uncle also has neighbor w/ a deaf little girl, now all grown up & the sign is STILL there!!! When people drive by these signs, you never know which kids is the Deaf one.. so I don't really see how it would really affect the child's self esteem. If anything, it's for their safety to alert drivers that as they honk horns, the Deaf child obviously might not be aware.

Of course no effect on the self esteem of a deaf child. It way beats getting run over.

Although I almost did get run over a couple of times as a kid anyway.

embarrassing? well hey - better than hitting or killing a child. it's same as "DEER CROSSING" or "FALLING ROCKS."

Yeah, sorry about the double post. I tried to just update the title before posting... ended up posting twice. Thanks for the response though.

I think it probably depends on the child. Some children wouldn't be too concerned, I don't think, especially if their parents had taught them to be proud of who they are. But, as with all children, some are more senestive. I think it probably does bother some.

I was hit by a car while there was no a sign. If it were there, it would not make me embarassed at all. I understood why the sign was established. In my neighborhood, there were too many kids around and elders, they keep telling to slow down whose driving were too fast in our local streets years ago.

At my former primary school there was a sign outside the school saying Deaf Children crossing or just Deaf Children as we used to go on a charity walk so the neighbourhood would be aware there was a school for the deaf in the area

I'm not deaf so I can't put my two cents in but...well, look at the sign below and tell me if angers you.

Technically - we should always be cautious of children, but sometimes if there's an area that is concentrated with deaf children, they like to put a sign indicating that children cannot hear if a car comes behind them, etc. It has good intentions.

I wish there was a road sign that says "Watch out for kids; Parents are not supervising." Nothing irritiates me more than kids being on the roads or near the roads without supervision...hearing or deaf.

Of course, I didn't mean they shouldn't have signs...just saying that some small children at probably embarassed to a degree.

Another nice result of those signs just very well might be that a hearing child's life was spared because drivers are more cautious when driving thru there....

Better to be embarrassed than hurt or killed.

True, Tousi. Those signs would benefit all children.

I had to google to know what the sign looks like (Europie here )

I read this sign similar as many others that are out there to alert drivers of what/whom they have to look out for. Whether hearing children or deaf children, being out on the street unattended sometimes can have bad endings. A hearing child can hear a car honk just in case.... a deaf child can't...

 I wouldn't feel offended by it! I think it enforces security on the road for the children :D

it's mostly like this -

^ :ty: Jiro but I found it on google :D

PowerOn: sad but true... :( (to your DevianArt) I also HATE people driving fast near school! Especially when school signs are blinking. That means that kids are getting out of school or into school within the next half an hour. It drives me crazy!!!! :mad2:

that's why we have cops at school zones during rush hour.
