I am new to the Deaf community and I never did ask anyone this but I figured I might as well ask in here. When you are driving how do you know if there is a Train coming or a firetruck or ambulance? Or if someone is honking their horn? Is there a device that flashes or something like that?

I am just trying to learn more about the Deaf community any way I can since it is sooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo hard to find any in my area.

:ty:

I personally live for my mirrors and am constantly checking them. Since having just recently losing all of my hearing (was only HOH, now totally deaf), I have been preparing myself for a long time. My kids have learned since they were born not to block any of the windows in the car and they also keep an ear out for me if needed. If I am by myself, then I just stay totally alert. I don't know of anything that would help, but I'd love to find out if there is.

It probably would be hard to make one because it would be hard to decern between loud music, sirens, train horn, car horn, and any other noise.

Deaf drivers in many states are required to have both side mirrors.
Deaf drivers in studies have been shown to have better safety records, because they are more alert to hazards and exercise caution.

As for me I can hear them if they get up close.

But I watch and I can see them long before.

That is helpful, thank you.

Bottesini, that's right -- deaf drivers rule!

I learn from my driving education that the deaf drivers tend to be better driver compare to hearing driver, believe it or not, because the deaf driver doesn't have to hearing stuff that take their attention and they just focus driving silently. But they could be lack of driving if they don't pay attention and signing to other passagners, or whatever. Mostly the deaf drivers drive just like the hearing drivers.

I concur with the above folks and conclude that hearing nor the lack of it is not a basis for safe driving.

I got my license and it states "Drive at your own risk" LOL!

No devices..just the usual...rely on our eyes to alert us as we do with our daily lives.

There were devices to assist you of coming firetruck police etc that mount on dashboard but that was rejected or dropped years ago. It was costly and if the law would had passed requiring all deaf to have one in their car then it would be a pain in the butt to get one for each car or truck or even commerical vechile deaf people drive and tax payer would wound up paying for it.

Here are 2 devices that was discountiuned

Abledata: Products

Abledata: Products

And one I am not sure about if they discountiune it or still trying to develop it etc.

Emergency Vehicle Alert , collision avoidance system

So instead some state laws just require deaf driver to have all 3 mirrors (both outside and 1 inside) in working condition before they could drive the vechile.

I had gotten a warning one time because my passeger side mirror was missing and I was pulled over for another reason which is bad taillight but when the policewoman determined I was deaf and she did check to see if all mirrors was intacted and found one missing mirror that she told me she could had wrote me a ticket on it but instead she gave me a warning to get it fixed and wrote me a ticket for bad taillight which I had 72 hours to fix and report back to get the ticket dismissed.

Well atleast they realized that would be unfair to make people have them. Well you don't have to worry about someone behind you that is impatient and honking like crazy at you because your not fast enough for them.

I have had my hearing hubby tell me that some peeps honked at me for driving slower than they are so I just say "Too bad!" cuz I am not gonna go 20 mph above the speed limit to make others happy!

Oh, that was you? Sorry, I didn't know that that driver was you.

Are you student at Seattle Community College? They have interpreter class.

I am profound deaf. Most important to keep eye on the road and check everythings.

I was resident in Seattle from 1976 to 81. I had motorcycle. Sometime, I was worry about firetruck or cop speed car during day time. I always double check before cross intersection. Just protect myself.

Night time, no problem to see flash from Firetruck or cop in Seattle.

One time, plain State police chased me for 5 miles. Hard to see hidden flash at front end. Cop know I did not drive above 55 mph or reckless but great driver like NYC during peak hour traffic.

Finally, I stopped.... Police told me, "I have been chase you for 5 miles on I-5" I laughed... Told him that I can't see any flash but noticed he talked on CB about me. Cop did not gave me ticket. Please drive less than 55 hour like everyone during peak hour. He understand that I am from East Coast like NYC or Washington DC which is worst traffic system.

Hearing people has higher rate accident than deaf.

If there is a police car with flashing sirens, most of the time I know because I'm the one who is speeding.

Oops.
