Had been called to Jury Duty a few times, but never made it to the jury box. :)

I was called too but I had my audi send a copy of my hearing test and a letter and I got a letter back saying they'll get in touch with me. I never heard back again. When I change my last name I got a letter for jury duty again as they thought I was difference person . I told them I am the same person with a new last name. My younger sister got call for jury duty but she was not pick b/c the case was about someone dying in a drowning accident and we lost a cousin this way.

I really wanted to be in jury box! Especially in criminal court! I missed few opportunities, damn it! Nothing to do with being Deaf! Here in this county, NOBODY can get away from jury duty regardless. The only exception is if you can prove that you have to go out of town for business trip, funeral for immediate relatives (Mom, dad, kids that is it) and guess what? They aren't off the hook, they will be rescheduled! EVEN judge themselves they can not be excused too!

Several years ago, NYS changed the law after excessive number of excuses for not going to Jury duty. NYS government got fed up with this and decided pass the law, no one can get excused regardless but can postpone, period.

The real advantage of having jury in grand Jury is that Judge will not be able to act as favoritism. This was intended to prevent judge from making decision whether the accuser is guilty or not. Having 12 independent people involved to make decision whether the defendant is guilty or not. I don't see why people can't serve jury duty!

I don't mind jury duty.

but you need to be neutral - no emotion.

I got called to Jury Duty few times, no matter if you are deaf or not. They will provide 2 terps. Yeah, I wouldn't mind at all of being in the box. for days or week.

Get waive from jury duty because you are deaf, is inexcusable.

I got waived due to my hearing loss. At the time, they did not have CART services. Option were terps only. I do not know ASL well enough for it to help. I was called in for a meeting to prove to them I did not know or understand ASL and could not follow along. After about 30 minutes of back and forth, they agreed that I could not be on a jury panel and have excused me.

I had already served on 2 jury panels before I went total deaf. Would rather not have to serve on another anymore. Was just too stressful for me.

Fair enough, you had experience. Who got on Jury bench and be stress-free? I don't think so.

Yeah, I don't think I could. And I doubt neutrality would be in my favor, either.

never was summoned when I was able to... first one was legally got off with being 600 miles away at school and other time being summoned for the wrong county few years after school. They used my high school address, not bother to cross check with DMV. Ever since not been summoned by my own county.

Relax:

Medical waiver isn't just related to deafness... theres another billion reasons why medically someone shouldnt be near the jury box.

Theres plenty of deaf serving jury duty they can do it with interps.

A medical waiver? Your deafness? Hope not...

I served as a juror on a case the first time I was called and the case lasted a month.
