What are you think about credit check for employment?

For me, I oppose to credit check for employment, but I support credit check for employment that have access to money and transaction, especially bank, credit companies, financial institutions, treasury office, etc.

Some employment are check the credit for jobs that not related with money or finance.

I know that federal law ban on discrimination against employees who filed for bankruptcy or bad debt - learned from legal studies.

Some states are start ban on credit check for employment with some exception like financial institution will be exempted.

Employment Credit Check

I had never run the credit check when I got job, so have you run the credit check when you got a job?

nothing wrong with credit check. it's to protect the employer from legal complication and expensive hiring process. you definitely do not want to hire a person with shady/fishy credit history. he could be a fraud.

credit check for employment is only performed with a consent. I gave my employer a consent to do it. nothing wrong with it.

even credit check for flipping the burger?

I think it may cause legal mess because some people who bankrupted for various reason like medical debt is one of them. If they applied for office job that isn't related to finance and employer do credit check to find out that their credit history is abysmal - because of bankruptcy so they have to turn the application down.

Fraud? If they are convicted of crime in fraud so it will shown on background check.

I support SOME EXCEPTION - such as financial institution and any place that you have access to cash so their employer have right to check the credit.

I against on credit check for ANY jobs aren't access to cash or financial institution, especially flipping the burger, stock the stuff, janitor, technician, fix the AC, food delivery, etc.

that's up to them.

no.

right.

Oh wow, I disagree with you about credit check on flipping burger or any places aren't access to money.

No? What you means?

7 states ban on credit check for employment.
California
Connecticut
Hawaii
Illinois
Maryland
Oregon
Washington

Some states are in pending, including New York.

Personally, I feel a background check should suffice...Many apartment complexes do check ur credit before they allow you to move in, along with a background check.....Some places require a higher deposit if you do have bad credit also.....

Feel there are a lot of people who have had bad luck in this economy, lost their jobs and could not make their monthly payments on time....so they now have bad credit....not by choice or being irresponsible....

In order for an employer to hire you, it wants to know about your credit history. Why???? It's none of their business. It's a personal matter. I refuse to give them my consent. If the employer doesn't hire me for not giving them my consent, I will make them pay for trying to violate my privacy.

Good news: it is illegal for your employer to check your credit that used as employment in your state, however they may have reason if you work with money.

For me, I will turn it down as well, but if I have to work with money so I have to let them to do credit check.

There are some people, hubby and I included, who do not have good credit thanks to this economy. We were doing pretty well until the auto industry started to tank, then when the whole economy started to tank, we went way downhill.

Hubby has lost so many job opportunities due to our credit history. We have no record of stealing from an employer or anything like that. All indications show he is trustworthy and all, but still, he couldn't get hired due to the credit report.

Not hardly fair in my opinion. I support criminal background checks and I support identity checks, but I do not support credit checks for employment unless something comes up in the other checks.

I agree that credit checks would be necessary ONLY if the job opportunity deals with finance or whatever. But what if you're applying to be a janitor? Sometimes situations happen beyond our control that unfortunately affects us. For example, what if you got laid off or your company went out of business and you ran out of money? It's not fair at all to be denied an opportunity just because of that.

OMG, that's totally unacceptable. That sucks. Congress must do something about it.

Imagine, an employer doesn't hire you because you fail to make payments to your car loan on time. That's so dumb.

When I mentioned auto industry, hubby was working for a manufacturing plant that built dashboards for Ford, Chrysler, Mitsubishi and Dodge. When the industry tanked, the company went out of business and their molding equipment was reworked to make toothbrushes. He then went to work for another manufacturing company building components for air conditioners for Carrier, Trane and Rheem. Transferred with the company, then was laid off when the economy forced them to shut down 2 of the 3 plants in one city. Get here to Florida then can't find work and then when he does, it's for minimum wage and almost no benefits.

When you ask someone to give you a job, they can make you do almost anything. Even the most menial jobs require you to sign away most of your right to privacy.

I often feel that staffing agencies that find temporary/contract to hire jobs are fronts for spammers and advertisers. They are thrilled to add you to their "roster" of clients, but the phone rarely rings after you sign on. They get your name, address, email, phone number, family stats, and employment history. They turn around and sell your info to advertisers that target you with ads based on this information.

I had credit checks, background checks done. All because I worked in computer industry in sensitive areas and atm/banking computers. Those areas I understand. However for other jobs I think a background check is all it needed to know who you are and how long ago the issue was. I think we need a new type of check for employment only that only employers can check.

Such as my dick size?

i dont agree with credit check, but background check would suffice, however, exception should be particular position where it deals with finance and or ethics in relation to access to clients finances, or even deaing with insurance policys for medicine or life insurance. No one wants a shady one to try some deception of any sorts while they have access.
Aside from that, their are some point that credit checks is just excessive, and invasive to privacy. I would never agree with credit checking to become common practice, no way, its just now right, and right now with the struggling economy, no one should be discriminated on the basis of 'financial security' , people Needs jobs, and rich wankers got to stop medding with peoples rights, ike for too long now, in the 2010's many legislation has been geared towards the upper class, its time for change of tide. People got to stop getting paranoid.
