TOKYO - Sony Corp (NYSE:SNE - news). said Friday it will lower the price of its much-anticipated PlayStation 3 video game console, heating up the competition in the next-generation gaming war against rivals Microsoft and Nintendo.

The announcement comes just days after Microsoft announced that it would roll out an external high definition DVD player for its
Xbox 360 in an effort to match the PlayStation 3, which is due to be released later this year with its own Blu-ray DVD technology.

Sony will cut the price of its basic PlayStation 3 model in Japan to 47,600 yen ($410), from an originally planned 59,800 yen ($515). That puts the PlayStation 3 in the same range as the combined basic Xbox 360 and HD DVD player in Japan, where the duo will sell for 49,600 yen ($427).

The price cut affects the basic PlayStation 3 model, which comes with a 20 gigabyte hard drive. Another upscale version of the PlayStation 3 will have a 60 gigabyte hard drive, but Sony is leaving its pricing to retailers.

The announcement could give the PlayStation 3 a badly needed boost in Sony's home market.

The launch of Sony's PlayStation 3, initially planned for earlier this year, has been postponed twice. A decision to delay PlayStation 3 in Europe for four months until March was announced earlier this month.

The PlayStation 3 will hit stores in Japan on Nov. 11 and in the United States on Nov. 17, but Sony now expects to ship only 2 million units by year's end instead of 4 million as originally planned.

The price cut is for the japanese, we dont have the price cut for the US and Europe.

Now, Sony added HDMI input on basic PS3 for all regional because of BD movies.

For people who said PS3 is overpriced then let a break and start conclusion.

Sony don't 100% confirmed about prices until next month for North America.
 
Man, PS3 need to realize that many people will not going to shell out for 500 or 600 dollars when they could have 360 or wi for at lesser price.

I pray that Sony recogizne this and cut the price down to around 400.

Just try to apply at UPS but only make $10 or more per hours, also work for full time, then you will get $1,680 (monthly)(10 x 42 = 420 per weeks) but not know about tax system in NC. That's more than SSI...

You said about bills but you live with parent then you just nothing to pay bills and stop worrying about bills, also I don't pay bills too.

Yea but high school is getting screw up because state adopted graduation exam and require to pass to get high school diploma then that hard for deaf people and english learners to get it. I had one more to left to pass (english) then I would go to NTID in next year. If you don't pass then you will get optional to take class in part time (one class) that help to pass it but some people rather go to community college.

If I graduate in 2002 or earlier then I can go to NTID after high school because of no graduation exam.
 
If Sony find way to cut and use cheap equipment to build PS3. Theory, it's usually have bad quaity to running.

Heck, if I buy Wii. I save $200 as I could use these for romantic dating with girl on fancy dinner, new cloths and maybe plenty condom package, if she plan to seduce me. yuk yuk
