Well no wonder why most deaf wanna CI? it a bad idea for deaf. Just because most deaf dont accept who they are really born for what lord wanna them to be it. And if they wanted a CI they would even disliked it later future of years. I had a CI and i had it 5 yrs ago on age 12 i though i would like it and now i am 17 i dont like it no more i hated it cuz well it my opinion is that if you got CI it wont even help you get you fully hearing the doctor is just saying a lies and they wanna is dirty money. Plz can you tell me ur opion to me plz. :grouphug:

For me, getting a CI was a great decision. I had worn HAs forever and I, in fact, became legally deaf (worst than 85% lost in both ears) recently. I'm one of those that function very well in the hearing world and I really needed a way to "hear" reasonably well. My CI (Freedom - Implanted in March of '05) provides that for me. I will attest that it a little different than "normal" hearing at first but now everything sounds very normal. I know it is not hearing as normal hearing people hear but it doesn't really matter as it gives me the ability to communicate with the hearing world even better than with my HAs. Not only do I communicate well via speech but I can hear all the environmental sounds and hear music which is the best part!

The success of a CI depends on many variables and some of it is beyond one's control. That is why they cannot predict with 100% accuracy how well it will work. I'm sorry to hear it didn't work out for you. There have been many success stories along with some so-sos and even fewer bad outcomes.

It is not a bad idea for somebody who wants to hear when they can't normally. A CI gives them a chance to do so. It doesn't cure deafness and it is not normal hearing but it gives people an opportunity to hear decently. That is all I could ask for and I got it and more. If it didn't work out, well I going deaf anyway and I would survive no matter what. There is no shame wanting to hear and there is no shame staying deaf either. For those who gotten a CI as a child, can still decide whether it works for them or not and go there own way later in life.

Update: I forgot to say that it is really what you make of it when it comes to a CI or really anything else in life.

r u one of those people who thinks ci is hilter to the deaf world? just curious../.

It depends on each individuals, IMO. Each individuals have different levels of damage in the cochlea, some may have no nerves at all to hear anything, some may have little left and some may have auditory nerve intact.

I am not sure because I don't have CI, I think that psychologist, radiologist, surgeon, audiologist are now involved together than in the past. So that psychologist can investigate your history of deafness, whether you willing to accept CI with desire and hope. Then radiologist will have it xray of your cochlea and send to surgeon to determine if cochlea is not deformed. Audiologist with surgeon can open up the ear drum and insert wire to the cochlea to test if it has feedback and it shows it is functioning. How? I dont know but they have equipment to test. I am sure 5 years ago they didn't do these equipment because they now are trying to reduce number of failures as possible.

You said you got the CI when you were 12... Was this your parent's decision for you?

Just wondering in case this is part of the reason why you are so against CI's.

I have the CI as well (got it 2 1/2 years ago), and made the choice for myself as an adult. However I have noticed that a lot of people who were implanted as children and are now adults (and involved with Deaf Culture) say that they were unhappy with the CI.. Another reason why I still feel queasy about parents who decide for their kid to get a CI

I agree with the others though, the CI results vary greatly by individuals.. and if you are an adult and feel that the CI is something you want, then by all means it should be a good choice. Adults know very well that getting a CI is a gamble and we are willing to accept whatever results we get from our CI's.

Im undecided..I think it's totally up to the person- if it's right for you and you want it- go for it.
I never had HA's..and come to find out because I have nerve deafness a HA would actually destroy the hearing I DO have. Go figure! :-/ but whatever, I'm happy as is, I dont need to hear what Im missing- mostly bc I dont know Im missing it!!!

Well let say nope. I think that hearing ppls are tryin to take over deaf world. I agree in my own opinon. And i wanna all deaf to accept of what they was born to be. I decide to have CI 12 yrs old now i dont like it but i had a baby brother whose deaf he got CI 8 mnths old and now he 6 yrs old he kinda against deaf. Well let say he dont go to deaf progam school and he just go to hearing skool he is the only deaf in that skool.

CI :rl: that is :thumb:

i have CI.. and i choose to get one.. i grew up in deaf world all my life. i, now am 25.. got CI not long ago and its Nucleus Freedom and i like it so far.. and am happy.. my deaf friends support me, which i'm shocked about.. cuz almost none of them have CI.

so i'm happy :D

Yay DeafScuba I am happy for you!!

I'm 24 and I can't use HAs & dont qualify for CI (75 db loss). Progressive tho so maybe someday I will get a CI! I am glad to know it works well. I didn't know there were a lot of different kinds

Well Crueldarkprince, I think that CI is great for progressive losses, and there is also a hearing loss called auditory nereopathy where hearing aids generally don't help too much.

I've had a CI since i was 6....I dont know what i'd be doing in life without it. I love it and would never want to continue my life without it.

As for your brother..., that doesnt mean he is against the deaf, that just means he wants to socialize with voice instead of signing. But if he comes across a deaf person, that doenst mean he will hate them.

I went to a deaf oral school from kindergarden to 2nd grade, and went to hearing school from 3rd grade to graduation. I have no problems with the deaf community.

I socialize with both deaf and hearing friends. Im not against the deaf or hearing.

the CI doesnt work for everybody, and unfortunatly (or fortunatly?) your one of them. you can suck it up and accept that it didnt work for you, but trying to bash the CI or stir up trouble isnt the way to go anymore. get over it.

One of my best friend just got CI, I already saw what it looks like right after the surgery. What a freaking chilling for me! He told me that doctor were using hammer, chisel and drill. Image doing that on skull, and suppose one mistake.... eeewwwwww!!!!!!! I'd rather not going though. For him, oh well it was his decision. Whats more, he was born hearing and became deaf at childhood. Im waiting to hear the result of the implant he got. He really wants to ride motorcycle, but doctor told him NO not until skull is completely healed... gee!

Chisel & a Drill, who did the operation a witch Dr???

Well Diehard I am not sure where your friend had their surgery or who did the operation are you sure it was not a witch doctor? I just had CI surgery in June and I watched the video of my surgery and there was no hammer, or chisel, they did use a surgical drill but it is nothing like your regular 3/8 reversable you use at home. I had an unusally long incesion for my implant but it was not bad to look at even when the bandage was first removed. Any surgery leaves a wound, and CI surgery is no different, but there is no problem with the skull the surgeon only makes a small pocket to hold the implant receiver, it is tied down to the pocket so it cannot move after you heal up. I healed up very quickly after surgery and had the staple removed a week after my operation. I would have to say as surgery goes CI surgery is not bad, I have a friend who just had a heart by pass and that was a big deal, he was not allowed to do anything but go to the bathroom for a couple of weeks, and talk about a scar they cut him from the throat to his belly button.

they are really born for what lord wanna them to be it.

Well if good Lord didn't wanna to have our poor hearing improved he wouldn't let us invent CI, don't you think?

I think that hearing ppls are tryin to take over deaf world.QUOTE]

What does the deaf world has that hearing doesn't?

I think this is ridiculous idea, I am sorry for being so blunt, but it is.
I am from a hearing family, I have hearing friends and relatives and let me assure you they don't give a zit about deaf pple world.. If only, they'd like to help.

As for your negative experience with CI, I am sorry it wasn't better. But I don't know your personal history so I can't say what went wrong.
Maybe the CI from the very beginning wasn't right choice for you, maybe you didn't received enough therapy and guidance while learning how to use CI.
Regardless of your lack of success, there is plenty of deaf people who are happy with the freedom the CI has given them and at the same time they still belong to the deaf community, and more important they still FEEL deaf.

CI-Cochlear Implant

DreamyHawaii said:

Dreamy, I am suprised you did not catch it from the title of this thread, CI means Cochlear Implant. There are to many acnoryms used today and that is a problem I think, but since I received my "CI" I just got used to the term.

I have visited you BEAUTIFUL state twice, and I sure wish I could get back again, maybe I will win a lottery and be able to afford a trip again.

Take Care

Why would the CI cause loss of brain/memory cells? do you have proof? who told you that and did you check it out with legitimate sources, like the medical journal, clinical research results and/or asked a certified ENT specialist?
the same goes for working with sensitive information- I think if anything, improving one's ability to hear would do exactly the opposite- enable that person to work in the area before restricted by a lack of hearing..?

there is so many mis-information and myths concerning CI that I would suggest to find out for yourself from reliabale sources what exactly is CI, how does it work, what are pro and cons of CI, what the newest models of CI have that older doesn't and how they affect our body.

I found it hard to believe what you wrote.

What if the firms decided to install the walk-thur humongous magnet. I do not have time to research the CI info. Why don't you?

Ask your CI friends and go to junk yard to see if the crane with superby magnet can actually pick up them?
