why people extend stay at Gally?

I have to agree with Miss*Empress....

I know a deaf guy who got 2 Master Degrees
from Gallaudet and still hasn't gotten
any decent job offer. What a waste, Sigh.

You don't have to go to College to go after what you want.

Tyra Banks doesn't have get a college degree to get a talk show.
Ellen Degeneres doesn't have get a college degree to get a talk show.

Oprah didn't have to get a college degree to have a talk show.

College is just something that slow people down, listening to some
professional for hours and read "How to be" books...

When you could done that at home and read "How to be" books.

Bill Gates didn't need a college degree...

Michael Jackson didn't need college degree to get job.

If you want something, go out there and get it now.

If you want an office job, start working as a secretary and work yourself
up til you're CEO or something.

Just like my StepDad, he worked worked worked, and then became
Supervisor.

College is just a WASTE OF TIME.

Mr. Walt Disney didn't even have to go to ART School, just have to
go out there and DO IT!!!

The Longer You Wait, The Harder It Gets.

Did you guys see the tv show, IRON CHEF: Rachael Ray vs Giada

Giada went to Fancy Expensive Culinary Cooking School in Europe
and Rachael Ray only worked at Candy Store, selling candies.

And they both have cooking show...

And GUESS who won IRON CHEF??????????

RACHAEL RAY who is inexperience, and she won, because her food taste better. She got her 13 Cookbooks on the shelves,
best sellers list, and she got about 5 different cooking shows...
That girl is very very wealthy and making more money, and is on Ritz Cracker commercial...

She is doing better than Martha Stewart...

And she doesn't have to waste money and few years at the COOKING SCHOOL.

It takes guts and right timing to really achieve that level of success without any formal schooling.

As for whether to get a college degree or not, it depends on the job u want. Like, for me, my kind of job requires a BA degree and with a Master's it pays more so I knew I had to get my degrees to get the job I want.

I know of many deaf people who have degrees in computer graphics or something related to that field and none of them have jobs related to their degrees. Instead, they have low paying jobs at group homes or still jobless. Maybe it is cuz that field is extremely competive?

It is a fact that deaf people face more obstacles in achieving that level of success due to oppression and fears from employers. It sucks.

Geez that sucks! I hate hearing stories like that and makes me wonder if discrimination from employers are still there? My husband, who is hearing, said that at his work, he has heard comments from the administrators that they feel like they waste good money on interpreters. He tries to explain to them that it is our right and everything but all they see is $$$ signs. The less money spent the better.

Well, yeah it does take a lot of guts...

Look at Fantasia Barrino... she has no high school degree and has
a child, so young, and never married... had hard time getting jobs....
And she stood in line just like everybody else and try out audition.
And now she won American Idol.

I bet Rachael Ray one day saw in the Newspaper and said UMMM,
I'm gonna try out this audition... so she went in
and try, and she got the job, in cooking show.

As long as you are unique and interesting and not like other people...
Don't feel sorry for yourself.

Best way to get JOB, is when you go out in the WORLD, and make friends....
Be open to everyone...

Another example, Anna Nicole, she went out and became a strip dancer
and met a RICH MAN, and told him she wanna be like Marilyn Monroe.

And he helped her out financially, to get more Cosmetic Surgery and
hire professional photographers to take her pictures and put her
pictures on every magazine and newspaper... and stuff...

If you try it, and fail, then don't give up, keep trying....

Did Tiger Wood give up? Did Michael Jordan give up? No, just keep
practiceing practicing, keep doing and do better and better....

Go out there and meet people...

You might meet someone who own a company, and be friend with that
person and get that person to hire you.

Empress, this is all very nice......how much of the positiveness of the above posts have you utilized in your own life?

Yeah I got 2 College Degrees.

Right now it's time to take a break from life's pressures and stresses.

I just wait until I am 45 years old, then I'll go out and do whatever
I want to do.

:fingersx:

All those people you mentioned are the exception rather than the norm. If you think you can do it like them, have fun trying. The majority, though, need a degree nowadays. That's how it is, now, and in the future. Most of those success stories were from an earlier time. I'm not saying it can't happen, it's just foolish to think it will for you, just because it worked for Oprah, or Bill Gates.

Those who neglect to study and refuse to realize that college is not for them are the ones that dont sit well with me cuz they waste taxpayer's money.

Shel, you've got a good point there.

I graduated from RIT 2 years ago (after 4 and half years being there) and I know of some people who stay at RIT (Gally I'm sure too) just because they've developed a niche there and they're not ready to leave. Some people don't like change, some people want change. For me, luckly, I was able to find a job 1 month after graduation and I think my college degree is worth it. There are some people who didn't go to college, they became millionaires - they knew how to do good investments - they're lucky lol. My boyfriend decided to not go to college and now he has to work at least 55 to 65 hours a week to support himself. I think if he did get a degree, he would not have to work as much.

Anyway back to the point - some people just don't want to leave the college scene because their friends, teachers, etc are still there. I'm assuming that they're not ready for change. Once they are, they will be ready to leave.

I agree. They're not just trying hard enough.

There was one guy here who got a degree in graphic design. He kept complaining that no one would hire him. When we asked him how many jobs he applied for, he said he applied only once. There's your proof of his laziness.

Yeah, he has to go out and make friends and make an impression, show
people his work, and let them go wow.

Someone talked to me in AIM, and he said his Grandfather was an
immigrant and he impressed people by working on their roof...
So he fix roof and another roof, and then another roof, and people
hiring him to fix their roof... so He got himself a business in fixing Roof.

You gotta impress people.

My Cousin was trimming the edge and cutting grass for my mom,
and my mom's female friends got impress with him making the yard
look so pretty. My mom's female friends have no man to help them
with the yard... so they hired my cousin... and he makes a lot of money...
He cut grass for my mom's female friends' friends.... Have to
get the words out.

You got a job, wow, Good for you. Instead of paying $10,000 a year at Gallaudet, why not get an apartment in Washington DC, and just
come by Gallaudet to visit friends... They can pay for apartment with the SSI, just live in a cheap apartment.

so you're saying you can't get a job?

sorry to burst your bubble, but you kind of have to be a peoples person or at least go out and meet others in order to do what you said's the "best way to get a job".

I just wish I can get a job easily without have to be around people...
I don't like to be around people...
People here on AllDeaf don't like me, so why should I go and meet people?

I'm just saying that if people here are so desperate in finding a job,
then go out and meet people....

But I am not that desperate.... SSI is just fine with me...

And plus... I don't want a man.... that is why I won't post my picture
on here and won't go to club or whatever to meet a man... I am
not desperate to be marry...
I don't want children either...

I just be on my own, in my own little world...

But I am not that desperate.... SSI is just fine with me...

You want everyone else to pay your way through life? SSI comes from other peoples paychecks. People who work. SSI is for those who need it. If you can work then you don't need it. Being Deaf should not entitle you to get SSI. You CAN do it! Earning your money will be more satisfying than living on welfare (SSI).

why I have to work, when I can sit back and do nothing, just
get pay to sit on my ass(bleep).

Have you ever heard of "Professional Students"?

As long as SSI, SDI, Welfare, and Rehab are alive and well, there will always be Professional Students.
