Another thread about this made me wonder just how many people prefer to buy widescreen or fullscreen DVDs. I prefer widescreen as I'm amazed how much of the picture I really miss out on. Also, the subtitles are sometimes easier to read, but on a widescreen TV, the subtitles wouldn't appear sometimes so it might be annoying for some people if they want to watch widescreen DVDs.

I like widescreen...

my DD (Deardaughter) loves Fullscreen...

so Sometime we both watch either way she knows I like widescreen she will watch it if I watch it.. if I m not watching it she use fullscreen

Soo... Most of us like Widescreen just like what Ziu said... more stuff on it..

I like widescreen because that is more accurate to the vision of the original production. Changing the format changes the feeling of the scene.

I like Widescreen I have a 55 inches TV, And would like to see the whole picture not part of the picture. ;)

I like fullscreen because I dont have the widescreen version TV at my house.. But my parents are planning on buying a widescreen flat panel plasma screen something like that... so i think i might morp into liking widescreen very soon! :)

Yes, though movies before the 50s are mostly in full screen. Overall, I prefer widescreen because most movies are now shown in widescreen including many new TV programs.

I prefer to have movies in their original aspects whether it be full screen or widescreen. :)

Widescreen all the time, baby!

But unfortunately for anime fans like me.. not many animes are in widescreen format. Actually it is no big deal since all animes are in their original aspects anyway.

What exactly are "animes"? Are they cartoons?

Shocked to see how much you miss out on by watching it in the full screen format?

The Lord of the Rings trilogy - you really do miss out a lot on these movies in the full screen format!

The Dark Crystal must be watched in widescreen, not the full screen format. Click on the link below to find out why.

Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade - better in widescreen.

Well, in some sense, they are cartoons but not like common America cartoons.

Animes is quite popular in Japan, far popular in west countries (Europe, Germany, America, etc) The animes contains many things that I like.. example: plot-wise, character developments, moral lessons, storyline, emotional scenes, list go on and on.

Of course there is bad or awful animes, it is same case as america movies. For some reason, I found myself enjoying to watch these anime titles. It often gave me some thoughts to think about. For example, 'Ghost in the Shell' movie, it explores in our humanity that which made me to think something that I never dream that I would ever think of. Some people assumed quickly that animes are for kids but to contrary, that is not.

Viewing shows and movies in a widescreen format is more sharply defined...our visual conception isn't boxed, it's more of in a rectangular vision...using the normal TV standard, I prefer the full screen method to view DVD movies until we have a widescreen TV version for which then we can view our DVD's movies in a more enchanted mode...surely then, it will be great to view and to enjoy!

Yeah, I wouldn't surprise.. but I am pissed off at myself that I accidently bought two LOTR (part two and three) in fullscreen format. I didn't realize until too late, I cannot exchange it back due to limited time. In other words, I am stuck with it. I plan to sell it thru amazon or ebay to get some $$ so I can buy the DVDs in widescreen format.

I perfer widescreen versions the best because of more stuff to see in the background and stuff like that...eh anyway, I just like watching widescreen movies on a full screen televison.

and Magastu, there are some anime films that are featured in widescreen versions and I, in fact, own just afew of those.

"Ghost in the Shell" is one of the best widescreen anime films I've seen so far.

definetly can't wait for "ghost in the shell 2" which should be on DVD Dec. 29th.

What age would you say is the target audience?
Do animes have product tie-ins like cartoons do?
I notice that many ADers avatars look like anime artwork, if I am guessing right.

Sorry for all the questions, but I don't follow pop culture or go to the movies, so I am behind the times on these things.

It is my fault for not explaining clear. Hey, it is ok for you to ask many questions as you want. Actually animes can be target for any ages but depends on what titles and what contents. For example, you know the popular kid show, 'Pokemon'? It is perfect show for kids to watch. As for Ghost in the Shell, it is not for kids. It contains the bloods, fights and violence (maybe nudity? I don't remember) but again, it is depend on you or any parents if teenagers are enough mature to watch or not. As I told any parents who asked me about animes, I suggest them to watch first before let their kids watch with them or without them.

About your question, Do animes have product tie-ins like cartoons do?

I am not sure what do you mean, I am bit unfamiliar with that term 'product tie-ins', sorry :/ Care to elaborate a bit?

A product (usually a toy, video, kids' clothes, something with a cartoon logo) that relates to a cartoon or movie. For example, "Sponge Bob Square Pants" is a cartoon. Products "tie-in" (connect) with that cartoon, and they sell all kinds of toys, clothes, pillows, etc., with Sponge Bob images. Like now, Burger King is "tying" into Sponge Bob. It is a marketing term.

You mentioned Pokemon, and I think that is another good example of product tie-in. Spiderman movie and toys is another good recent example.

You don't have children yet. When you do, you will really understand about tie-ins and the power of advertising. :)

Ahh, I got it now. Yeah I wouldn't surprise I know them whenever I become a father. Anyway, most of anime titles aren't. Usually kid shows like Pokemon, Digimon, DragonBall, etc etc.

Princess Mononoke(link) is a good example, it can be target for both adults and teenagers but no product tie-ins. btw, Princess Mononoke was licensed and translated by Disneyland.

Magatsu,
Thanks for the info and link. Now I have a better understanding.

(This one reminded me of your avatar. :) )
