To have the Cochlear Implant at profoundly born only

Hi there. The letter says that I cannot have the cochlear implants that I am 26yrs old.

Unfortunately we cannot accept the referral as a Cochlear Implant is not suitable for someone who has been profoundly deaf since 6 months of age and we note that SpaceyUFO has received minimal help from hearing aids over the years.

We would therefore advise that no further action has been taken by the District Health Board Cochlear Implant Clinic on this referral.

Thats what it says to me. It is load of CRAP! I know that I still can get one cos I have heard of sounds before with my hearing aids. Cat purring, dog woofing, car passing, mmmmmmmm, Hello, door close and open, drawer open and close, musics, kids screaming, bell goes, toilet flushing and people talking (didn't understand them).

I agree with the others that something doesn't make sense here. Go see another audiologist.

Yeah, this doesn't make sense.

I think you should get another audiologist. If i were seeing that audiologist, based on everything you say, I wouldn't qualify by the audi's standards either.

DEFINITELY go see another audiologist, or write directly to a CI clinic. I was implanted at the age of 33.

I have been to see my doctor recently, he said he will referred me to another orlisgist (can't spell it right)

Hope second will let me! :S

It is been taking long time to get their reply about CI.

In the weekend, my mate and I were waiting for the pizza to pick up and we were in my car, saw one deaf girl was sitting in the front of seat of her mates car so it was easy for me to spot her cochlear implant (cos I saw her wearing the cochlear implant on the left bte) look like around 18yrs old and I had to dare to myself to make it forward to ask her question, "you deaf?" then she said no Im not deaf......!

I asked her again, do you use sign or oral? She said Im using oral... then I said ahh cool... so I had to leave them alone and can't be bother to talk to them. Cos they were busy drinking in wrong place (open public and it would have so easy for the cops to see them and caught them) It was so lousy place for them to drink that place!

Like you I am also born profoundly deaf and have 115db loss but worn hearing aid in my right ear most of my life.

I was recenly implanted 2 year ago in my left ear and I was over 40 year old.

There not very many deafs in my town but they have implant center becasue lots of folks in here get implanted when they lose thier hearing when they got older so we have lot of 60's and 70's year old folks with implanted that they were hearing all thier life then lost it when they got older.

There is one man in my town that was implanted when he was 82 year old!

So whomever sent you that letter is full of it!

There are quite a few older individuals who have received implants in my area as well, having lost their hearing as they got older. In fact, my mother is 58 and is almost deaf in her left ear and is slowly losing her hearing in her right due to meniere's disease. She's considering CI if she loses it all.

As others have so eloquently stated, get a new audiologist. I think it is generally accepted that people who are pre-lingually deafened adults do not have the sale terrific results with CIs as infants. But that doesn't mean that pre-lingually deafened adults can't get good results, it is just a lot of hard work for both the patient and the audiologist, and your audiologist doesn't sound like they are interested in helping your particular demographic.

i have -120 db hearing in both and now im at 35 db with CI. i got it when i was 9 yrs old....way too old for the learning age for sounds and now i can speak okay and is able to understand lot of noises. i still am unable to learn words (most likely because i did not want to when i was a kid. im working on that now with upgraded CI BTE)

CI is not a miracle. you wont understand a sound right away. understanding words is hardest of all. but there is good chance you will hear lot more than u could with hearing aid.

i suggest you to go to VR (someone please spell that word fully) or CI specialist. If you would like... pm me with the location and i could provide you a list of CI specialist or VR (understand im not asking for address just city and state) it will take me a while cuz i will contact my CI specialist and VR for the list but it should make the search a bit easier on you.

i want to help u getting ur CI.

Need to clarify some of your comments...

I agree a CI is not regular hearing but it is remarkable in what it can do for a person. From a standpoint of somebody such as I who was always HOH and then was losing all hearing...it is a miracle (I had nowhere else to turn). BTW - I was 47 when I got mine!

Some do hear right away and even understand speech right off the bat (I was one of them). It really depends on where one is coming from in terms of prior hearing ability whether one is late deafened or aided with a HA since very young. I agree the older one is the harder it is but it doesn't preclude one the opportunity to have very useful hearing especially if one is willing to work at it.

One's inability to understand spoken language probably has nothing to do whether one wanted to or not "per se". It is rather the idea of having "enough" hearing aided to even learn spoken language when one were younger. One's critical window with spoken language is the first 5 years or so. After that, it is a problematical exercise in statistics. Meaning some have a built in advantage with spoken language and can sort of catch up later but extremely rare one can do that.

Yeah speak with other person. I was 19 when audiologist told me I can get CI if I wanted one. I am profound deaf and only can hear stuff at low pitch when I wear hearing aid. And I have not wore one since middle school.

I have always wondered if CI will work for me. I have not seen people who are in the same situation as I am in that have CI worked for them. Only for people who were HOH or baby to start with.

Hi there, I've been seeing a doctor and they will referred me to another audiology in two different hospital means i have to wait within 6months time! I hope not when im overseas! I am planning to go oversea in Madrid for one week then one month in Canada to see my friends in Belleville. Hope they can referred me to another hospital.

Later on, i lost my confident due that his mother said that I won't be able to be like hearing level!

Don't you just hate it when someone make a negative comments like that? But it is true, deaf people can never be like hearing people. I am severe hard of hearing from birth, went to mainstreamed school all my life without learning ASL and have cochlear implant about 3 years ago. And I still can't talk or write like a hearing person. But I can be myself :)

BTW, I had my cochlear implant done when I was 28 years old. I told my Audiologist that I want to hear my son better to protect him from danger. I don't want to tired myself out by watching him like a hawk. You can never be too old. And if you wore hearing aids til you were 7 years old, you probably have a good chance. Get another opinion.

If u had asked me that same question when I was in my early 20s, I would have said , "No I am not deaf because I can speak and lipread." How dumb I was back then??? I have no CIs and have a profound hearing loss. To say that I wasnt deaf was really  of me. I was in HUGE denial about my deafness. Now, I embrace it and life is so much better. :)

I have recieved a letter telling that i won't be able to have cochlear implant due they said i have still to be 6mths old baby. They turned me down. Grrr I was so pissed off!

I still won't give up until i get one! Will type it more and put the info into there when i get the time and paste it there. I need some help how to get it.

You have a six months old baby or it's because you're older than six months old?

I think she was being told she cannot get implants because she is older than 6 months old?
