tired old scare tactics

Considering how we studied Jefferson as one of the Enlightenment thinkers in Canada... yeah. :|

Not to mention he's mentioned in the basics of modern world history in university classes too-- Canadian ones at least.

Again this decision (although I don't agree with it) was based on the fact that there would be a full dose of TJ in US History. It was a pretty big battle over just how much could be crammed into a textbook.

Alot of conservatives (including me) actually do like TJ

Maybe because he preached predestination? It's easier to scare people with hell when you have that doctrine.

I took Renaissance and Reformation. Luther was the main topic even in that class.

TXgolfer, we've got legislators from Beaumont and Lufkin making these decisions. Maybe TJ's not appreciated so much there.

Probably not. I did comment when this came out that it sucks that politics has entered curriculum planning. Not sure how it can be avoided now though. Kids are the one's that lose.

The conservatives hate Jefferson because he was a deist and coined the term “separation between church and state.”
I don't hate Jefferson, and I don't personally know any other conservatives who hate him. We are glad for the wall of separation that protects the churches from the state. It's more contemporary people who have twisted that phrase to imply that religious people should stay out of politics.

yep - specifically, freedom of religion, not freedom from religion.

He preached a misinterpretation of predestination.

Indeed. Separation of church and state is a good thing.
Hate Jefferson?

Conservatives hate TJ? News to me....

School prayer before high school football games is a big deal here now...

Never understood that. Truth is I don't care if they are praying to Hine-nui-te po.....if they are praying for me not to break my neck I will take it.

Simply being in possession of a computer does not create educational success. Look around you.

And, people can be very well educated without a computer, believe it or not.

so if there are 2 Jillios..... Jillio A with a computer and Jillio B without a computer... who would be at advantage when it comes to academic research?

The conservatives hate Jefferson because he was a deist and coined the term “separation between church and state.” I have no idea why an academic panel doesn't make the curriculum decisions.

Don't even get me started on science education here. I've already taught my youngest kid about Darwin and the Scopes trial.

I thought he was simply removed from world history or was he entirely removed from all the text books from grade school to 12 grade in Texas? I'm referring to a post someone made in another thread.

I wish that people would learn the difference between communism, socialism, and facism and their historical contexts. Then again, Texas just removed Thomas Jefferson from the world history books so I'm not expecting much improvement.

She said world history in her first post

Christians of a certain religious bent are the only conservatives that I know of who don't like him. I should note here that I am not referring to most Christians.

I understand that many - if not all Christians - think they should not be of this world and not participate in politics as it's worldly.

I'll look back at her post and reread it..

Yes she did. I'd like to have her expand on this.

I do consider him important in World History because he was one of the founding fathers of this country and this country has had a profound impact on World History. However, I don't think he needs to be be studied in depth in World history. Just American History.

Really?

At the risk of getting this thread locked, I must disagree.

Christians can be involved in the government process as long as they don't compromise their moral values.

Render unto Caesar . . .

Paul put to good use his legal status as a Roman citizen . . .

This really says it all...

Just saying:

First Public School in the USA: 1635
First Public Park in the USA: 1825
First Public Highway in the USA: 1924

And the kicker: the first water system: 1450

I don't trust the graphic.
