Space Colonization for the longer life expandancy

Wishing for a longer life instead of focusing on this life and what one can get out of it sounds a bit like a waste of time, but hey, we are just humans after all.

Suppose the science comes to a point, where they declare that the human race now can choose to become immortal, something that would not suprise me, what would happen? We would get time to travel vast distances in space, but what would happen to our minds? No more need to hurry to do this and that. We can use 10.000 years to improve at something or enjoy a hobby for a really long long time, but will we be happier? Will the curiosity survive? Will the first generation of long living humans commit suicide at a higher rate than later generations? I wonder....

perfectly good question! our mind is a complicated thing. it can make us do the funny thing :)

while increased life expectancy sounds great...... it also puts a huge burden on social security, Earth resource, and population. the longer you live, the more you pollute and consume resource.... plus - the more we spend on defense program, the more advanced we get. That's why you have faster commercial jets, bigger cruise ships, cooler & smaller GPS technology, Internet, etc.

be careful of what you wish for :)

not neccessarily, if we are willing to to consider to consume less to need to get rid of capitalism. It's an outdated mode of societial configuration.

short happy life is better than long shitty life :)

What if you are happy when you are old and want to enjoy your life for another 100 years? That's what id like to do.

A 10,000 year lifespan won't come close to discovering everything. The universe is so vast, if not infinite. There is enough fun things to do that will easily last hundreds of lifetimes. Those that die young(today it's considered 30, 40, 50 years) are missing out on so much. In the future, those who die before 100 will be considered to have died young!

Immortality is impossible if you are flesh and blood. It's possible for machines/robots as long as you have proper backup of data/memory.

outdated? capitalism is actually a new concept. That's why America is a superpower in just barely 300 years while rest of the countries took thousands of years and they're still not there yet. It's also why Japan became a very advanced Asian country in an incredibly short amount of time.

Capitalism is what promoted democracy and freedom. Capitalism is what drives innovation and free thinking. Capitalism is what made your life and our life easier - with assistive technology devices. People actually get PAID for their free-will choices! In communism, dictatorship, socialism, etc... people are forced to work and they have no choice in life. But of course... each system has its strength and weakness... and capitalism has its drawback. However, its benefit far outweighs the cons. I suppose it's just the matter of time till that changes.

:cool2:

why not? As long as they don't criminalize suicide for those who doesn't want to live anymore :)

fun things to do that will easily last hundreds of lifetimes? We can't even have fun for more than 50% of our time! damn bills..... we all got bills to pay.... :mad2:

Science have discovered some species that seems to be immortal, and also some genes in species than can turn on and off mortality. For example species of hydras and jellyfishes. Guess what they are doing at the moment, right, trying to single out those genes, and also continuing looking for more immortal species.. Never say never!

I was thinking about lifespans in millions, billions and even more, but used 10.000 as an example for how long time I can imagine a person enjoying a hobby. That's insanely long time to workship surfing for example. What happens with a person that lives for 500 millions of years. How will that person behave? Like a teenager? Baby? Old man? Or something else, something not possible to imagine?

Japan isnt really capitalism, in Japan? sic, Culturally, they are expected to be shoved, and then some more shoving for the nation, it is more like Facism, but with a Shinto religion has provided for a clever face of wealth and good fortunate following slave-like hard work to reap the rewards as paid as close proximity to the devotion would exact itself in material gains as "in life"while fitting into their ideals of the sought lifestyle (sorry I know this is a weird way to say, but i cant think of any other way to say it).

I am not sure why a lot of people in this thread actually wants to live this long...i suppose to yern to witness the discovery of the new world might be awe-inspiring, but then it might not be. What Im saying here i can understand the fascination but then it might actually be very frightening to actually go this distance or length of time in frozen suspension, as for me- I'd probably not wish to, despite the sheer brillience of this fascination might hold.

Lastly, I'd like to mention that while we have seen a number of Hollywood films have this immortality issue woven as part of the plot (Indiana Jones sagas is one example of this) and as the plot thickens it always revolves around how it is 'evil' for the 'baddies' to seek immortality and the 'goodies' always wins, AND the harmony returns as immortality is no longer a threat to 'normal lifespans'. Wonder why, dont we ever stop and thnk why this is considered same as 'greed'?

Well if we finds out that we are able to live forever, then there will be no religions debate that we have for many years in middle east that wasting our dollars.

I'd rather to stay living in a happy long life, why would I put anything shitty in it?

 I agree. I prefer to have a normal life than an immortal life. In my opinion, I just think the immortality is a selfish choice and I think a death natural is just a part of life. Honestly, I will be so pissed off if someone bring my life back, for a obvious reason, someone may not know how to move on without me. I don't want an immortality or to be revived by someone else. :)

why be 'pissed off' i dunno about that, i mean you might actually 'raise to consciousness like waking up and find it pleasant that some people from the future wants to greet you, heck you might even find yourself honored to be pick for interviews about the past??
but Living forever like 10,000 + years is something too difficult to fathom

So exactly how long do you want to live? Would you refuse a life-saving surgery or medicine at some point saying you are tired of life and want to die or suicide?

I wouldn't be pissed off if someone revived my life, I'd rather feel like thank them very much for awaking me and introduce me to the future.

My opinion, desiring to stay in the death are immortal and selfish. If you stays in the death, what can you have for others?

Geez... I can't believe you assumed a such thing like that. =/ Whatever to you guys.

I remember my neighbor was 89 years old, and all of her friends were dead 20 years ago. She didn't enjoy to live longer. She paid all of her taxes to keep up her reminder.

How can our astronauts able to pay their taxes awhile they are in the outer space? They will have fun, fun, fun, and no one would mention about paying any taxes so they want to live longer.
