Dating Service Onlines are fraud, they took money from lonely
vulnerable people.

NEW YORK (Reuters) — It's not easy finding love in cyberspace, and now some frustrated online daters say they were victims of fraud by two top Internet matchmaking services and have taken their complaints to court.
Match.com, a unit of IAC/Interactive Corp., is accused in a federal lawsuit of goading members into renewing their subscriptions through bogus romantic e-mails sent out by company employees. In some instances, the suit contends, people on the Match payroll even went on sham dates with subscribers as a marketing ploy.

"This is a grossly fraudulent practice that Match.com is engaged in," said H. Scott Leviant, a lawyer at Los Angeles law firm Arias, Ozzello & Gignac LLP, which brought the suit.

Match "promotes the policies of integrity to protect members, and yet they themselves, we allege, are misleading their entire customer base," he said.

The company said it does not comment on pending litigation. But Match spokeswoman Kristin Kelly said the company "absolutely does not" employ people to go on dates with subscribers or to send members misleading e-mails professing romantic interest. The company has about 15 million members worldwide and 250 employees, she said.

In a separate suit, Yahoo's personals service is accused of posting profiles of fictitious potential dating partners on its website to make it look as though many more singles subscribe to the service than actually do.

Yahoo did not respond to requests for comment.

The suits, which both seek class-action status, came as growth in the online dating industry has slowed, although Web matchmaking still remains a big business.

U.S. consumers spent $245.2 million on online personals and dating services in the first half of 2005, up 7.6% from a year earlier, according to the Online Publishers Association. That's a slower growth rate compared with several years ago.

At the same time, competition among online dating services is fierce, with some sites offering newfangled features such as extensive compatibility surveys to match up people with similar temperaments and outlooks.

Allegations of 'date bait'

The Match lawsuit was filed earlier this month in U.S. District Court in Los Angeles by plaintiff Matthew Evans, who contends he went out with a woman he met through the site who turned out to be nothing more than "date bait" working for the company.

The relationship went nowhere, according to his suit. Evans says Match set up the date for him because it wanted to keep him from pulling the plug on his subscription and was hoping he'd tell other potential members about the attractive woman he met through the service, according to Leviant.

His lawyers said Evans, of Orange County, California, was not available to comment, but described him as a working professional in his 30s.

Leviant said his client found out about the alleged scam after the woman he dated confessed she was employed by Match. The lawsuit also claims the company violated the Racketeer Influenced and Corrupt Organization Act, a law best known for being used in prosecuting organized crime.

The Yahoo suit was filed last month by Robert Anthony, of Broward County, Florida. The suit, brought in U.S. District Court in San Jose, California, accuses the company of breach of contract, fraud and unfair trade practices.

Anthony's lawyer, Peter McNulty of the McNulty Law Firm in Bel Air, California, did not respond to requests for comment.

I knew it all along! I never spend a penny for any services to get me a woman! That is because I CAN smell scam easily!

Not surprising, really.

It's been known to happen. Happened to phone dating services, too.

Ahh, well, that makes it harder for others to find their soulmate if they're being ripped off.

But they shouldn't be led to get their hopes up too high and the crash to a new low.

Wonder what'll be the outcome of this lawsuit.

Yeah I wonder about that but I have met few guys from there in person. So, is that fake? I think not...

People shouldn't refer to these online dating services... period.

What's the point of going there? No, I'm not referring to the cost or benefits... cuz nothing ever happens.

We find real dating opportunities in person.

dating services

Dating services are not fake. There are real people looking for other for dating and to building relationship. But if you contact a person who is not interesting in building a relationship with you, you can't blame the dating services. I have met a remarkable deaf man on deaf-match (a free emailing dating site for the deaf and hoh). The problem we have are he lives in Inidana and I lives in Missouri. I am older than he is. But he is and I am as real as can be. Now when we meet each other for the first time and find we do not want to see each other after the first meeting; this will be our decision, not the dating services. But I will not pay a dating services to chat or email anyone.

Sure, but these online dating service is perfect for rebounding relationship and hurt innocent people. So, they don't always work. I know some success in there, but not as many as it seems

I disagree. I could meet a man down the street at Starbucks and start dating him only to find out he is on rebound.

I have dated men who my family thought were perfect for me only to find out that they abused or cheated on me. Go figures.

Or I could meet a man online who lives 4 states away and is looking for a real sincere woman to love.

It doesnt matter where or how we meet these dates - it is HOW we use our judgement period.

Your disagreement is valid!

I met very few girls from online dating.

I prefer to use craigslist.org - it's free to post personal ads or reply someone's ads. Of course, scammers can be there around. So far, I met two girls in there ;)

Oh yeah, they are totally useless NOW. Way back in '98, when I first got hooked on to the net, I came across a site which was like a classifieds website. I was curious how it worked, and so I joined for free and put up my ad. And every week I made about 4-5 friends(girls) from around the world. You could say, they were my pen-pals. I really missed those times, as it was totally free, very friendly and very interactive. I am still in touch with a few pen-pals through letters, emails. This site was also like any potential dating website (www.classifieds2000.com), but isnt it important to meet someone in person before making the commitment?

At times I feel, the internet is a big boon for we people who are HOH/Deaf. It is a good way to communicate around. But maybe not a good place to FIND friends. So, I dont surf these stupid dating websites. I know its difficult to find someone otherwise, but with time I could learn to be more socially active like just anyone.

:ugh: TSK TSK! What happen to old fashion meeting people anyway??? Guess we are too lazy to meet people out?

I think it's nice to meet people online, but only on a chatting basis and nothing more.

I've seen people who meet others online and then become boyfriend/girlfriend without ever having met in person. Some even meet another in person and then become boyfriend/girlfriend after one weekend.

Too fast for me. :nono:
