Some people mentioned about the learning disabilities that gave me some insights how can they identify themselve that they have learning disabilities by teachers or professional.

I notice some of you who have learning disabilities yet some of your english is pretty good. I may not have familiar with learning disabilities what it is all about. No one told me that if i have learning disability. I do have trouble studying in school because i thought it was my limited comprehend of english that causes me to struggle in school for years. Also, I am told by Phd that I have ADHD when i was 30.

Don't you guys mind if you guys can share your experiences with learning disabilities that makes me understand better.

I feel like just about every deaf is diagnosed with ADHD..everywhere I turn, Ihear another deaf being diagnosed with ADHD. You have to be aware that ADHD is hard to diagnose with hearing people,so it's harder to diagnose with deaf people. It take a special psychologist who is experienced with deaf people to accurately diagnose you.

I was diagnosed with a mild ADHD by a deaf psychologist in San Francisco area few years ago. I believe I was then 32 or 33 years old at that time.

I first knew the term of LD/dyselxia when I was a first grader, believe it or not. My old neighbor has it.

Like Lighthouse77 said, you will need to get evaluated by a LD/ADHD specialist to determine if you are diagnosed with that disability or not.

I don't believe in regular medication that helps me. What I do is to get myself busy with various tasks like my job, for example, it helps me burning out easily. It works for me.

Sometimes, I get too excited and blasted at someone for unnecessary reason. opps. It happens to me once in a while. at myself.

I have severe dyscalculia which means problems with math. I can add and subract and that is about all.

Also I had an early diagnosis of autism which was changed in adulthood to Asperger's syndrome which is a milder type.

But it is true that deaf people do get more diagnosis of autism than the general population. I know one person who was changed to "Autistic behaviors due to deafness."

My only real skills are reading and writing, and that due to the dedication of my parents more than the schools.

Although many deaf can appear to be ADD like, most of it is due to problems with communicating with everyone around them.

Most d/Deaf don't have the sort of difficulities that people with classic ADD have.

I grew up thinking I was emotionally disturbed because of problems with a severe ocd (it's under control now but not gone) and I had with problems with attention span, implusive behavior and on my first grade report, it says I'm easily distracted. Being organized has never been my strong suit. Once I lost my ATM card 13 times in one year; I nearly lost it when my banker wanted to know how I could lose my card so many times. Those symntoms that I describe are typical of ADD. I didn't get dx'd with ADD till I was 28.

interesting that you have asperger's syndrome, so how do you handle with it that i understand you mentioned its a mild type. the reason is that your english is pretty good and you seem to have good common sense as well. that's what I am amazed with some people who have forms of learning disabilties who can function in the real world.

I believe ADHD is a greatest hoax ever invented like Global Warming (except the severe form of ADHD). It's a simple diagnosis - YOU ARE BORED THE F**K OUTTA YOUR MIND with whatever you're doing :)

My English is good, but you wouldn't want me to do your budget! Although actually I do ours because it is simple and it involves adding and subtracting.

And I function well because I force myself to do so. I think lots of people know after high school I spent three years in group home living, where I determined to get away from and developed a terror of not being in control.

Asperger's kind of features OCD like behaviors and that is the epitome of control.

 I agree. It is another way of having good daydream.

Some people do force themselve to do something but they couldn't. Interesting. thanks.

My oldest daughter has ADHD . If you had ever tried to live that way, I think you would be less flippant.

I had a really nice long reply that got lost when AD went down - here goes again:

I have reading comprehension problems and have had it for as long as I can remember. Teachers never said anything and it wasn't until I was an adult that there was any mention of this. I also have mild OCD (obsessive compulsive disorder). I am a hand-on-learner due to the comprehension problems.

My daughter has CAPD (Central Auditory Processing Disorder), ADD, Mild Autism Spectrum Disorder, fine motor and gross motor skill problems and we believe dyscalculia. She cannot handle much more that very simple basic math and even then she needs manipulatives. She also has speech and language delays. She struggles with everything, but takes it in stride. She knows when she is about to hit "brain overload" as she calls it, and goes out to ride her bike to clear the head before starting over again. Small victories are really celebrated even at 15-16 since there aren't very many.

Hubby was born with mild brain damage due to medication his mother took while pregnant. He cannot spell, has reading problems, and can only do very basic math.

Son lucked out. He only has a moderate hearing loss and as far as learning, it's more of "I don't want to do it!".

All in all, I feel we are blessed and lucky to be where we are, and I couldn't ask for anything more. Our struggles shape who we are to become, and personally, I have a bunch of great virtual friends in spite of their "learning problems".

Also "mild" PTSD........It's real but way over diagnosed.

yes, I was saying that even professionals don't know what signs to look for in deaf people. It take a special kind of professional.

Kristina, first sorry about the first long one before AD went down. ugh.

I think you are a good mother who gives a lot of times to be with your children and homeschooling them. i couldn't do it but you are doing it with your kids. that is so amazing with your disabilities and you are doing alright so far.

now you mentioned reading comprehsion problem. No one or teachers told me about my reading compregsion problem except i saw teachers wrote reports about me that i have reading comprehsion problem. I realize that I did struggle to answer the problem math solve questions when i was a kid. I am not a fan of those problem solve questions.

I suppose some teachers decide not to say anything to the parents about their children when children have problems. Like some kids who couldn't read and write received HS diplomas.

I never read any my teacher's report. But my report card was always about being "stubborn" I didn't want any of my teacher's help.
