How much is my used computer worth?

in fact... computers naturally drop $500 to $1000 per year of it's value...
that totally sucks.. bill gates is too smart doing this.. that's how he become rich.
Actually, it's not Bill Gates. It's the companies that are building the computers. DELL has this problem. Gateway has this problem. IBM has this problem. It's everyone! Argh!

*ouch*

Moore's Law is truly at work considering computers get outdated quicker than any other technology.

Alex's 2 year old Dell would be worth much less than what I can pick up at the Wally World for 400 to 600 bucks retail but much less if it was sold to a computer dealer.

But I have seen people sell computers for more than they are worth in the newspaper ads.

Also another factor is "Supply and Demand". If I was to buy a used computer configured like Alex's and it is in short supply I would end up paying more but if there was more like that example computer the price goes down. This reminds me of the situation between used and new car prices and I think it applies to computers as well. But most of today's PC's are custom-tailored and loaded with options like a car, your mileage may vary!

so...caveat emptor (buyer beware)

depend how the demand are show what people will buy. Simple look at ebay or anyother website and compress how it cost. I am sure, it would cost probably a thousands dollars. Sell the used computer is very tough to sell what price you are really want to sell.

You can always give it to a charity where they need computers for those kids in the low-income schools... :)
it is tax-deductible if you want something out of it. :P
Not a bad idea. I'll check into that when I have a chance. Know of any website regarding charity and computer donation?

I have the same type of computer you have except my processor is a little higher (2.2 GHz). I bought it last August for $400 (without monitor). So I think my computer values around $300-200. You might sell it on ebay for more money if you're lucky. Maybe bbnt will overbid it by accident. :)
Cool. Did you buy it directly from Dell? $400 is kinda cheap for a 8200/8300.

Hmm... I might be interested in buying your computer. :deal:
For $100? If 2GHZ computers were literally that cheap, I'd buy them in stock and resell them for $500 each, including monitor, sound sorround speakers, and all the features I mentioned above. Are you serious? Wow...

I would buy it from ya...for 500.00 dollars....
Thanks but no thanks. If I get fired from my job, the web design market is very low, and the whole Internet goes down along with my other dot-com businesses, then I'll take your generous offer.

Say Alex, does this sound like another great idea for having an auction forum on AllDeaf??
Great concept but bad idea. Wait a minute, that doesn't make sense. Well, you know what I mean. ;)

RE: How much is it worth?

Alas, not terribly much. Computers depreciate very quickly. I see your computer uses Rambus RAM--that will make it harder to sell, as even Intel has gone over to DDR these days, and I don't think you can trundle over to CompUSA or Best Buy and pick up some Rambus RAM any more.

I agree with the folks who say that the thing to do is find a charity, or give it to a young relative who could use a computer. There are a lot of folks for whom a computer like that would do anything they'd want.

Where to donate?

It's a bit far from New York, but the Central Iowa Computer User Group runs ROCK (Recycle Old Computers Kindly), where they refurbish old computers (even there they have constraints--among PClones, Pentium or better only; there are a LOT of old 386/486s out there, I guess) and donate them to non-profit organizations. http://www.ciacug.org/rock.htm is the URL. I'd be surprised if there weren't user groups closer to you that do the same kind of thing. Shucks, you might get a better deal in the way of a charitable deduction than you'd get selling the computer.
