How many of you feel like you're in a budget crunch?

I know the perfect field for you fella. I doubt that you would be interested but it is right there waiting for you. Medical supplies and equipment.
There is a lot more to it than you might think. You will not get bored. I guarantee that you can find somewhere in or around Chicago that deals in medical supplies and equipment.
Old laptops is a HOBBY. Got that? We all have hobbies.. we like to help others with our hobbies too, or not. They are what we like. It is not how we make a buck.
A job and a hobby are not the same. A job you do stuff you do not like to do along with what you do like. Someone pays you a wage for that. In turn you contribute to the American system. Then you really have something to bitch about.

Hmm. That's a start. I'll probably look there, and see what I can find. As for the bitching, been there done that. When I worked at the Navy Base, I wasn't making a lot of good money, despite getting paid $9.50-$12.25/hr, and all I was getting was $375-$400 every two weeks, so I already knew what it's like.

may I ask, what did you do all day?? did you do something that needs to take care of ?? just wonder.

Actually yes. I went food shopping and ran some errands. I knew we were expecting a snowstorm tonight, and I wanted to be ready, so I went in search of a cart to carry heavy loads, but the cheapest one I could find was $23, so after I stopped by the bank to get what money I needed to buy it, I then stopped by the food store to get what food I could carry in my mittens, and then walked back to the store to get the cart, and then went to stock up. Afterwards, I was about to head home when I remembered I needed a new phone case, so I stopped by Cricket, and brought a new case, and took a look at phones to set a goal to save up for, and then I came back home to check the mail, and didn't see any, so I came back in, and relaxed. I also paid off my rent and Internet bills this morning, too.

I'm not picky, okay? Some of my injuries from the past have forced me to change my goals on what I am able to do, and I would be open to returning back to the workforce if I didn't have the injuries I had. Now you and everyone ganging up on me is just making me more motivated to do something, so I can thank you all for that.

im no stranger to injuries nor the recovery time needed to get past them if ever.
what injuries are you recovering from?

"To get past them if ever" is an understatement in my case. I'm not recovering from any right now, but ten years ago, my right knee was completely shredded, and it took a full year to heal from that, and then I had to deal with 3 months of inflammatory pain, and once that abated, my knee was in really bad shape, and was weak. Fast forward 11 months later, when a van hit me, and tore my knee up AGAIN, furthermore weakening it, and despite physical therapy for 3 months, it was still in terrible shape. Now fast forward 24 months, when I first started riding bicycles again, and that year, in 2008, my knee began to get stronger, and it's not the same as it was prior to the complete blowout, but it gets better little by little, which is why I'm constantly on my feet-- it needs to stay loose. Now in 2012, I tore my left knee ligament, and took 3 months of recovery time. Not even 6 months later, in February 2013, I tore the ACL of the same knee, and took 6 months time. I'm hoping that will not happen again to either one this year. I also have had two major back injuries requiring 6+ months recovery time.

When I was a teen, I wanted to earn money, but finding a job was difficult in a crappy economy and being deaf did not help either. I took whatever jobs were available....scrubbing toilets, washing dishes, flipping burgers, temp agencies, etc....all the jobs that no one wants to do.

I hated my last employer....they treated me like crap, and kept finding ways to avoid giving us decent pay raises, but I stayed there for 13 years....why? Because I needed the money, and the pay was still better than other places. There is no such thing as the "right place to work".....you have to take what you can.

Like you, I only want to do specific things, but don't have that luxury. I was told many times that "there is no way you can do this without being able to hear"....and had to prove everyone wrong. Still have to do it until I croak.

If you want to live comfortably, you have to get out there and work your ass off. Opportunities don't come to you.....you have to get them on your own.

p.s. I work in the energy sector, and have been working with computers for many, many years....trust me, any laptops older than 4 years old are not worth the price of repairing. As soon as our software's support expires....all old computers are donated, scrapped, or used for target practice. We want people that can fix new stuff, not the old stuff.

But you can work your way up or get the experience and then apply for better paying jobs. I have 11 years of experience as a teacher and I volunteered to be on committees, run committees, go to state-wide conferences and bring the information back to train my co-workers while on my teaching job. Now, that I have all of that to add to my resume, I am applying for better paying jobs. I just submitted an application as an academic specialist for the Dept of Defense in Washington, DC. It pays $10,000 more than what I am making now.

I started my working career at 15 years old working at a fast food restaurant and went from there.

That's true. I'm just hard-headed and stubborn.

If you're gonna donate those computers, I know of a program that could put them to real good use, so if you do that, let me know, as I'll gladly put them in new homes.

For me, I'm feeling the pinch now. Who is going to buy bikes now in Chicago area? It's hard for me to make sales. I'm simply experiencing the lower end of owning a business. It goes with any business someone runs.

Maybe if you hitch sled dogs to your bikes? ;)

You are looking for cart or something to transport food or any goods you buy? If so, I think I have something for you. E mail me and I'll see if I have what you are looking for.

My dad started his own custom painting business (in AZ) in the early 70s. During the first 10 years, he worked 10+ hours 6 days a week getting himself established. After that, his business took off and at one time someone offered to buy his business for millions of dollars but my dad turned the offer down. That was back in the late 80s and early 90s when business was booming. He had a fancy house, a cabin in northern AZ, and all the luxuries one could dream of. Then, the recession in 2008 hit...my dad lost all of his retirement savings and his business almost went under. In the last 3 years, he finally got it up and running to be able to compensate for the loss of his retirement. He will retire this month but wont live in luxury like he planned. He will have to live on a fixed income.

My mom, on the other hand, started working at a minimum wage job at 30 years old at an insurance company as a file clerk when she and my dad divorced to pay for the house and to support my brother and I. She was always broke and poor but now, she is 5 years away from retirement and she has more wealth accrued in the company's profit sharing investment plans, 401(k), and her house is almost paid off so as a result, she will have a healthier retirement than my dad.

Mark, all we can do is our best. I am pretty sure you have other things going on to prevent you from working. I don't think you're taking advantage of the system. Life seems to be a struggle for you. If you can get a job and feel safe then fine. No one knows what goes on behind closed doors. Just do your best, that is all any of us can do.

Interesting!! I didn't know someone would potentially become rich owning a painting business. Sorry that your Dad lost his retirement saving. Thank for sharing this.

Yea, he is ok. He still has the cabin up north. He and his wife will move to the cabin after he retires. They are downsizing and my dad is just thankful that he still has a roof over his head and his Harley Davidson to be able to do some traveling with his friends. When he was younger, he had a fleet of Harley Davidsons, few boats, all kinds of ATVs and desert cars, membership to the country club to go golfing, and a collection of expensive guns. I grew up camping, off roading on motorcycles and ATVs, shooting in the desert, and waterskiing in the lakes with my dad. It was a charmed life. It made my mom angry and bitter at him because in her 30s, she was living from paycheck to paycheck and couldn't afford any entertainment for us. It was weird living in both worlds between my parents.

ok. during your recovery periods im assuming you had extensive rehab? did you diligently kept to the strict scheduled of what ever stretching, rotation, flex ect exercises were given. recovery time isn just waiting it out. you didn't mention any surgeries thats a good thing. define major back injury.
