Uh— :wtf:There are 3.323 times as many deaf people in China as there are Chinese? If they all signed at the same time, would the resulting tornado blow Dorothy back to Kansas?

I was going to edit that when I realized I fucked up my math. It looks like my calculator is either going haywire since I cant add 1 + 1 = 3

But however the Deaf population in China and total population estimate of 2.5 billion against 75M Deafies out there either somebody made a bad guess or is 75M for real unless it was counted in the Chinese census? ....who knows?

On the Dorothy question

Not a tornado.....Likely more a hurricane than a tornado considering 75M pairs of hands signing at the same time would move a lot more air than a tornado does!

I get 3.009%. You’re right—that does seem to be an extraordinarily high number. Especially when you consider the fact that China and North Korea are the two nations in the world most likely to be practicing "ethnic cleansing" as routine policy, if you get my drift. I think somebody accidentally added three zeros to that number.

well of course China is the most numberous because it's the most crowed country in the world

Your guess on the extra zero mistake is pretty much spot-on the money. There would be no way to get an exact figure of how many Deafies are out in China unless they were hidden or somebody had a pretty bad abacus skill. (They still use abacuses in China go figure)

Not to mention China's One-Child policy which is obviously not working well......

Makes me wonder how the hell of a miracle the Commies managed to stay in power despite 2.5 billion total Chinese population...

China should be number one supporter in Deaf rights for having the most Deaf people..

I dont think China treats the deaf very much with respect and all...they proably dont care that they are deaf but do care about their money and other crap like that...I'm just glad I never went to China before anyway but I give great pity for the chinese being under complete control under the chinese government...

I was in Hong Kong, China for six months in 1980. I had seen alot of Deaf people work as a Janitor to clean the toilets and floor with low pay. Some Deaf women do the file clerk and jewlery to put the earrings together.

Two years ago, my friends and his family visited with us for two weeks from Hong Kong. They mentioned that Hong Kong Deaf Community has been alot of improvement to provide an interpreter, technology and communication access better than 1980 !! They hire more Deaf people to work as computer programmer, JAVA and SQL, etc... The hearing people realized how brilliant Deaf people are.

My Deaf friend currently promoted as a supervisor !!

It will take alot of time to change better society for the Deaf Community in China. Now, they are working on.

I remember somehwere in the deaf newspaper in article that said the deaf community in China aren't into social that much. :|

Unfortunately, China is very huge country. There are very difficult to keep the Deaf Schools nearby those Chinese Deaf children in China. They were scattered in many schools that are mainstream but no interpreter provide. They never had any integrate with other Deaf people before until they heard about Gallaudet University, NTID or CSUN. They learn more about their own language as identify as Deaf. Same with Russian Deaf people are not integrated with other Deaf people because they scattered thousand miles away. Many hearing parents do not know what do about their Deaf children go to Deaf Schools. What is the best for their education?

I am impressed because Deaf people in Hong Kong to learn three languages; English, Chinese and Hong Kong Sign Language. They took 11 subjects in the classes even go to school on Saturday. A lot of them are very brilliant Deaf people in Hong Kong, China.

I thought at first just like you. I was in Hong Kong. I learned so much about their sign language which have 3,000 characters Chinese language. Hong Kong sometime borrow American Sign Language because they do not have any sign for that character. Is not it interesting ? :)

In China is very huge country, they use most of Shanghainese sign language. American Sign Language did not influence Chinese Sign Language. In Hong Kong, they use HKSL as in China, they use CSL.

I wish, I can write Chinese in this forum. Anyway, for example.. "Love" in that character. (heart, hug and expression) As for English we write in love but Chinese writes three characters in one word as love. That is interesting to me to learn about their language writing in Chinese.

I only can write my name, numbers, friend, and love that is it ! It took me to learn how to write Chinese language.

It is really fascinated to know about China's culture and language for six months. I would love go there again in the future. I heard, Hong Kong changes so much since China takes it over. Hong Kong is very beautiful city ever I saw entire in my life !!! You can view the cities from the top of mountains especially night time. AWESOME !!!

FIY, they did not like tease around. They are very serious and mature in their conversation. When I first arrived in H.K. I tend to teasing them but they get piss off easily. Whoa ! I realized, I was not manner at my age. They taught me how to manner and respectful other people.

I was too serious in my character for six months with them. (Really hard !)

England used to own Hong Kong until about 10 years ago, the "contract" end and allow China take over HK and demand HK students to learn Chinese language. Surprise thing.. HK is not much same as China. It's remind freedom more than China does because of habit. It's impossible to change the law on HK people.

Oh yeah I've heard about that... Britain letted go of HK sometime in 1997 and HK did have some difficulities with the chinese government and stuff...saying they wont obey them or something like that so it left them alot of problems then and now...
