Hello! I’m 18 years old currently living in California, US. I became hard of hearing when I was 16. It was sudden and idiopathic. I’m now 18 and going profoundly deaf. I still use hearing aids but they aren’t working as well and wont at all fairly soon. I’m still learning ASL but know enough to communicate. I’ve recently found myself at a crossroads of whether or not I should continue to use my voice or not. Due to many medical issues, talking is very straining for me. Adding the hearing loss doesn’t make it any easier.

I’m hoping to make more friends that can understand where I’m coming from. I just moved into my own apartment in a new city. I’m shy so it’s hard for me to go out, but when I do go out I make friends easily. I’m going to try and attend some deaf socials here in my new city and see if I can make some good friends there. I’m used to the small town socials from before so this will be a bit of a change for me, but I’m excited.

Thanks for listening,
Kali

Hi Kali, Nice to "meet you".

I am sure there is few that can come up with suggestions, I am sorry, I cannot help because I am from UK.

Yesterday, I went out on trip with deaf people, I was the volunteer and I teach deaf people how to sail. On board I saw someone very quiet, intovert and quite slow at reaction etc. At first, I didn't recongise him, then someone gave me the mainfest of who's who, I saw a name that I recongised but looked for him. When we were about to leave, the captian told me that the "quiet, intovert bloke has MS" I knew what MS is and there is so many types. When I introduced my collegues and myself to the deaf people, explained whats happening for the day, and asked each person what their names etc, The "quiet and intovert bloke" was the person I didn't recongise but recongised his name!! I was flabbesgated I had known him when we were kids (i have not seen him for 15 years) and he was live wire, naughty but sweet boy, the difference between then and now is shocking. I said nothing but he did say he recongised me. He had fantastic day, and were going to catch train when we all were arranging dinner, I said to him if he's tired he could go home but wouldn't like it if he was on his own, the train trip home is nearly 2 hours so someone offered to drive him home. He stayed and we caught up with our past then he started to reveal his illness, few of us had asked questions etc then understood his illness better. He volunteers at museum in the big smoke (london) by talking to deaf people, had moved closer to his neurological hospital so that he doesn't have to go far. At the end of dinner, I could tell he was "feeling" happier that he had said it... but he had the MS for 15 years. He said he is glad to stay on and chatted with us. I intend to get him more involved with sailing trips as I think it would get him out of the cocoon of MS and be himself for the day or two. He said he had few bad days, that's acceptable and we'll work round it/give him what he needs because we just want him to enjoy the trip without worrying of what will happen.

There are people who do listen, I hope you will find few people to socialise with.

Good morning Kali- your problems in rapidly decreasing hearing with speaking difficulties does compound your life. All of this while only 18. I would think in this situation the best answer would be extended discussions with the medical people you are dealing with -right now. Either of one's you have- is a major difficulty in its own. Much immediate success to your pressing major difficulties. Many of one's apparent problem pale besides yours-right now- eg hearing loss etc.

There is a tool bar type thing under the "alldeaf" title. It says User CP, Blogs, FAQ, Community, etc. Click on User CP. Once you click on that there is a navigation bar on the left. Click on Edit Signiture.

I'm not sure. :hmm: I'm actually new here. Did you confirm your account through your email? I don't remember if it had to be confirmed or not but might wanna check. If you already did that then I'd say email a moderator or the site itself.

I'm sorry you're having trouble.

Please IM me on Yahoo! IM if you're interesting and plus, you're required to have 100 shellfish to make deposit. And you shall win 1 million shellfish. Thank!

And then we can talk about something interesting about boy and girl are flirt each other.

Hey I just signed up on this site too. I am not experiencing quite the same thing you are, but I saw that you were new here and to ASL (as am I) and I thought Id say hi. Oh and I have friends in Sacramento (although that is not pertinent at all).

Have a great weekend!

Benjamin

Well hello there. :)

Are you d/Deaf, HOH, or hearing?

Haha yeah, I'm definitely much more of a country girl so it's a little weird being in Sac, but oh well. I'm just thankful to have my own place now.
