In about 9 or 10 months from now, I hope to graduate with a Computer Support Specialist AAS degree and ready to look for a job in either Denver or Minneapolis.

I have some questions about these two cities:

  • How big is the deaf/hoh communities in each city?
  • Where can someone learn ASL from a Deaf teacher in an accredited course?
  • How active are these communities?
  • What are the classroom accommodations like in the colleges/universities there?
  • Anything else I should know about the deaf communities there?

Thanks! :)

What make you decide to pick those two places? I'm just curious.

Mpls/St. Paul has a very large Deaf community. I think Denver does too but I can't be certain.

Minneapolis is closest to family members and friends (I'm in North Dakota). Denver has the Rocky Mountains, which I really like. I don't know anyone in the Denver area yet, but the Rocky Mountains are calling. :)

I'm open to other areas, too, I just don't know much about them. For that matter, I don't know a whole lot about Denver either. I know a bit more about Minneapolis, having been there 6 or 7 times.

Both are also major tech centers from what I understand. I want to go somewhere I can be paid well.

I've seen more tech jobs in Denver. Centari always struck me as underhanded, but living among telepaths could be a plus for deaf/HoH if you can deal with the politics.

Then there's the eventual destruction of Centari Prime. I think I'll just visit.

Both seem to have pretty large counties. I've always thought geographically, MN seems like the equivalent of Pittsburgh, PA from pictures and looks of it. Denver is double the size of the MN pop, I think it's a pretty big place? Haven't seen the city other than driving past it on the interstate.

I'd go with whatever offers the better job conditions if there are no preferences towards either city. Denver might have more jobs, but it also can mean more competition from a large pool of people/corps in the county so you could be out of a job quickly or unable to land a position. Both would have its good and bad.

Looked up COL (Cost of Living) conditions for both:
Code:
Denver, CO	Minneapolis, MN	United States
Overall 110	105 100
Food 102	106 100
Utilities	88	99 100
Miscellaneous	108	111 100

You'll probably be paying more in rent/housing in Denver.

I should probably add that I am referring to the Denver and Minneapolis metropolitan areas, not necessarily those specific cities. More likely, I would locate in a suburb within walking or biking distance of work (save money on transportation). I might locate near Boulder, for example.

A few things important to me in a city:

  • Outdoor activities (D, M)
  • Interesting landscape/topography (D)
  • Baseball culture (D, M)
  • Soccer culture (D)
  • Sport fencing culture (D)
  • Amateur astronomy clubs (D, M)
  • "Technology nerd culture" (D, M)
  • Plenty of other stuff to do so I don't get bored (D, M)
  • Reasonably priced flights to other cities and overseas (D, M)
  • Reasonable climate (D)
  • Plenty of social activities (D, M)
  • Good-sized dating pool so I can find my soulmate (D, M)
If anyone can suggest other cities I should consider, please feel free to do so.

You're right, Naisho, I would go where the jobs are, basically. :)

Chicago or Grand Rapids, MI. I go there a lot so they're good. Michigan does have a pretty decent deaf population. Chicago has better deaf population.

Just to confirm, have you ever been to those 2 cities? You might want to schedule some weekend trips to fly there and check out the scenery there. It's one thing to read census and news reports but another thing to actually BE there and see what you think of it. Can you actually see yourself living there?

That, and consider the cost of living. While one city might offer a higher average salary it might be more expensive to live there. I once thought about moving to california and when I looked at average salary I was excited until I saw the apartments and housing costs. :eek3: I then settled for atlanta metro area and have been happy with my decision so far. :D

OP said he's got relatives in MN, visited there several times.

If you are opening up to any cities you might get a lot of feedback here from everyone's bias, you'll get a lot of suggestions. Couple of things I noticed you missed about MN:
- It's close to a large body of water, so for spring-summer it'll probably be significantly cooler than Colorado. Fall-winter I'd imagine both have their share of chilly and snow. Northern continent also helps reducing bugs and whatnot.
- If you want scenery and natural stuff, MN is also pretty close internationally to Canada and whatnot that is there. Not sure if there are any mountains on the way though (?)

I think lots of large corporates, some ex-CA have migrated over to AZ, NM and other sources of cheap land and/or tax. I'd research which place I want to work. Personally, if I was doing computer tech/dev I'd go with where I have employment potential lined for the jobs first, then work the city choices from there. Unless you got a stash of cash saved up before the job!

Do you hate bugs?

I don't hate bugs, but it is distracting to see a centipede crawling out of the electric socket. :ugh2:
Do you hate bugs?

Mmm... i love bugs.... But interesting to bring it up about "Bugs in the City"...instead of something like ... "crimes in the city...." or other, but it throw me off when you said about bugs... I laughed....

Don't forget that Denver is in the highest mountain. I have passed through several time going to New Mexico to visit my family there. Denver is large all right. If you don't have any relatives living in Denver. Then the best option is to visit the city of Denver to see what you like about them. Go check it out.

If you have relatives in Minneapolis, then you know the area better than what you don't know about Denver. I used to live in Minneapolis, Minnesota when I was going to oral only mainstream elementary and high schools. I was brought up in middle of Minnesota in the bush with my mother's parents (adopted). I love living in the forest better than in the city of Minneapolis. Now I am living in the bush here on the Manitoulin Island in Canada by myself. I might consider moving into the city of Everett or Seattle to be near my son and his family. Looking forward to seeing the grandchildren. It will take a while to think about moving to another state. :)

Edited: What is Centari Prime????? Never heard of that. Is that a new city or town? :hmm:
