Investigators Turn To Craigslist For Clues
Investigators Turn To Craigslist For Clues - CBS News

Prosecutors placed an ad on Craigslist Thursday in an attempt to find other women who may have been victimized by Philip Markoff.

Suffolk County District Attorney's Office spokesman Jake Wark said that Boston investigators hope the ad, posted in the "erotic services" section of the Web site, will persuade other possible victims to come forth.

"Were you attacked or robbed at a Boston-area hotel after placing an ad on Craigslist?" the ad asked. "If so, you may have information that could aid the investigation into the April 10 armed robbery of a woman at the Westin Copley Place Hotel and the April 14 murder of a woman at the Marriott Copley Place Hotel. Both victims were attacked by a prospective client who had contacted them through ads placed on Craigslist."

The posting does not mention Markoff by name, and Wark says investigators aren't sure there are other victims.

Markoff, a Boston University medical student, is charged in the April 14 killing of Julissa Brisman, a 25-year-old masseuse he met through Craigslist. He is also charged in a robbery of another masseuse that police say he met through Craigslist.

Also Thursday, a law enforcement official, speaking to The Associated Press on the condition of anonymity because he was not authorized to discuss the case, said Markoff had been placed on suicide watch at the Boston jail where he is being held. ABC News and The Boston Globe, citing unidentified law enforcement sources, reported that what appeared to be shoelace marks were found on his neck.

Defense attorney John Salsberg told reporters he was concerned about Markoff's well-being but otherwise declined to comment on the reports.

Jail officials declined to comment to The Associated Press, citing privacy rules.

In an exclusive interview with the New York Daily News, a college friend of alleged "Craigslist Killer" Philip Markoff discussed an incident with him four years ago - possibly fueled by alcohol - which may have provided a glimpse into the medical student's dark side, reports CBS News correspondent Daniel Sieberg.

"He pushed me up against the wall and tried kissing me," Morgan Houston told the paper in the videotaped interview, obtained exclusively by CBS News.

"I couldn't physically get him off of me," Houston told the paper.

Investigators were not certain the Craigslist ad would produce new leads.

"There may not be any other victims out there, but if there are and they have not seen or are not comfortable responding to our requests in the mainstream media, this may be a way to make contact with them," Wark said.

Markoff has pleaded not guilty to charges of murder, armed robbery and kidnapping.

Meanwhile, supporters of Markoff have launched a new Facebook group to rally around him.

The new Facebook group called "Phil Markoff is Innocent Until Proven Guilty" describes itself as a forum to rally against the media and a culture "that has forgotten that people like Phil are suspects, not killers."

Markoff was arrested Monday in Walpole, less than 20 miles southwest of Boston, as he drove with his fiancee, Megan McAllister, to Foxwoods Resort Casino in Connecticut.

McAllister, who earlier this week said Markoff would not hurt anyone, is standing behind him, her father, James McAllister, told reporters Thursday.

"She's still confident in Phil. Other than that, we're saying a lot of prayers," he said outside his home in Little Silver, N.J.

Report: Craigslist Murder Suspect on Suicide Watch
Report: Craigslist Murder Suspect on Suicide Watch - Philip Markoff : People.com

Alleged Craigslist killer Philip Markoff was put on a suicide watch in a Boston jail on Thursday after corrections officers found shoelace marks on his neck, law enforcement sources told ABC News.

Also on Thursday, the former Boston University medical student's future father-in-law told reporters gathered outside his Little Silver, N.J., home that his daughter is still "praying" the arrest is a mistake.

"She's still confident in Phil. Other than that we're saying a lot of prayers," said Jim McAllister, father of Megan McAllister, 25, the Boston Herald reports. McAllister was planning to marry Markoff, 23, on Aug. 14 in a wedding on the Jersey Shore. Her father did not answer questions about whether the wedding is still on. When asked if his daughter was following all the latest scandalous allegations, Jim McAllister responded, "How can you not?"

Odd Behavior
And WBZ radio in Boston aired an interview with a Cape Cod woman, who did not want to be identified, who claims she sat next to Markoff at a blackjack table at Foxwoods casino on April 16, two days after he was accused of murdering masseuse Julissa Brisman, 26, and the same day he's suspected of attempting to rob a woman at a Warwick, R.I., hotel.

The Cape Cod woman said Markoff spent about $600 and hardly said a word, bringing down the upbeat mood at the table. His behavior was so odd, she told the radio station, that she mentioned him to her friends after he left. When she saw his picture in a newspaper after his arrest, she said to herself, 'Oh my God, it's him."

Foxwoods issued a statement earlier this week confirming its cooperation with police in the Markoff investigation. In another development, a friend of Markoff's started a Facebook page titled "Phil Markoff is Innocent Until Proven Guilty." The purpose: to "Rally against the media who is quick to place blame, against the culture that has forgotten that people like Phil are suspects, not killers."

BOSTON – Prosecutors placed an ad on Craigslist on Thursday in an attempt to find women who may have been victimized by Philip Markoff, the medical student accused of using the Web site to prey on them.

Craigslist suspect linked to RI hotel
AP source: Craigslist suspect linked to RI hotel

PROVIDENCE, R.I. – A fingerprint has been found linking a medical student accused of killing a masseuse in Boston to a hotel near Providence where another woman claims she was attacked, a law enforcement official said Friday.

The official told The Associated Press that Philip Markoff's fingerprint was found on a wall of the Holiday Inn Express in Warwick, where a stripper has said she was tied up and held at gunpoint by a man she met through the Craigslist classified ads Web site. The official spoke on condition of anonymity because he was not authorized to discuss the case.

The official also said Markoff sent text messages from the hotel but said he didn't have information about what Markoff said or to whom he wrote.

Markoff, a Boston University medical student, is charged in the April 14 killing of masseuse Julissa Brisman, a 25-year-old New York City resident who advertised on Craigslist, at the Boston Marriott Copley Place hotel, in the historic Back Bay district. He also is charged in a robbery at a nearby hotel of another masseuse police say he met through the site.

He has not been charged in Rhode Island, where police and prosecutors have been investigating potential links to the Boston cases.

Markoff has pleaded not guilty, and his lawyer, John Salsberg, has said he is innocent of the charges.

A Las Vegas woman who worked as a stripper and was offering lap dances through Craigslist told police she was bound with cord and held at gunpoint late April 16 at the Warwick hotel. She said her assailant fled when her husband returned to the room.

Connecticut Attorney General Richard Blumenthal has asked Craigslist to immediately eliminate photographs in the "erotic services" section, hire staff to screen images and ads that violate the site's terms of service and fine users who violate those terms.

Craigslist founder Craig Newmark said he does not plan to close the "erotic services" section of the Web site despite criticisms that it facilitates prostitution. He said the site already allows users to flag inappropriate material they believe should be removed.

"Sometimes a bad guy of some sort tries to pull a fast one on our site," he said in an interview airing Friday night on ABC News. "We don't want it there, it's wrong, and that's why we have the help of the general community and the law enforcement community getting rid of things like that."

Markoff, who was arrested during a traffic stop Monday as he drove to Foxwoods Casino in Connecticut, was placed on suicide watch at the Boston jail where he was being held after authorities reportedly found shoelace marks on his neck. His fiancee said earlier in the week that she supported him and didn't think he was capable of hurting anyone.

Markoff's parents, brother and sister-in-law visited him on Friday at the jail.

The parents, Susan Haynes and Richard Markoff, did not speak to reporters about their son, but his attorney said on their behalf that they love him very much and support him.

"They, of course, remain very concerned about him," said Salsberg, who would not discuss his client's condition.

Meanwhile, Brisman's mother, Carmen Guzman, said in a statement Friday that losing her daughter to such a violent death will "haunt me for the rest of my life." She said she was "relieved that the man who did this is in custody."

Suffolk County prosecutors in Massachusetts said they have placed an ad on Craigslist in an attempt to find other women who may have been victimized by Markoff.

I live near Boston, and read the Globe regulary so the Craigslist case has been ALL OVER the news!
The financee to me sounds like one of those ubernaive Pink Red Sox Hat Girls, who's from a high achiever suburb.
Prosecutors said during the weeklong trial that Anderson, of Savage, ran a phony ad on the Craigslist classified-ad Web site in order to lure a woman to his home so he might experience what it felt like to kill.

The defense argued that the shooting was accidental. Anderson's lead attorney, Alan Margoles, said he plans an appeal because he wasn't allowed to present evidence that Anderson has Asperger's syndrome, a form of autism.
WTF?!?1?! Asperger's Syndrome shouldn't even freaking BE a defense ...has nothing on earth to do with the crime.

August Wedding for 'Craigslist' Suspect Is Off, Says Wedding Band
August Wedding for 'Craigslist' Suspect Is Off, Says Wedding Band - Philip Markoff : People.com

The August 14 dream wedding on the Jersey shore between accused Craigslist killer Philip Markoff and his fiancée Megan McAllister has been called off for now, according to the leader of their wedding band.

"A family member of Megan's told me there is no possibility of this wedding taking place this August," William Forte, founder and keyboardist for the B-Street band, tells PEOPLE exclusively.

Jim McAllister, father of the bride-to-be, told PEOPLE at the family's Little Silver, N.J. home: "We know nothing right now, no comment." Markoff's parents have not returned calls for comment.

Forte describes the family member he spoke to as "distraught and in shock," and says the person called him in the last 24 hours.

In preparing to play at the wedding, Forte met with Megan, 25, but not Markoff. "She was very nice, bubbly," he says, "very personable." Previously, Megan has described her fiance as a "beautiful man inside and out." Markoff is accused of killing aspiring model Julissa Brisman, 26

The B-Street Band is a Bruce Springsteen tribute band. McAllister's Facebook page says she is a fan of Springsteen, who has a home in Rumson, N.J., which is near McAllister's hometown.

Forte says he is dissolving the contract he has with McAllister's family. At the request of a family member, Forte took down a statement he had posted on the band's Web site saying that the wedding was not going to take place. Says Forte: "I feel terrible for the families."

Mother of Craigslist victim 'devastated' by loss
Mother of Craigslist victim 'devastated' by loss - CNN.com

The mother of a 25-year-old woman killed in a Boston hotel more than a week ago said Friday that she will remain haunted by her daughter's death for the rest of her life.

"Our family has been devastated by the loss of our beautiful daughter, Julissa," Carmen Guzman said in a statement released Friday, which would have been Julissa Brisman's 26th birthday.

"The feeling of losing my daughter in this way and the pain she must have felt will haunt me for the rest of my life," Guzman said. "She won't live to see her dreams. We will hold Julissa in our hearts every day."

Philip Markoff, 23, a second-year student at Boston University's School of Medicine, is charged with killing Brisman on April 14 at Boston's Copley Marriott Hotel.

Police have said that Brisman, a model from New York, advertised as a masseuse on the online classifieds Web site Craigslist. They say Markoff may have met her through the online site.

Prosecutors say Brisman sustained blunt head trauma, and said she was shot three times at close range. One of the bullets passed through her heart, killing her, prosecutors said.

Markoff, who was arraigned Tuesday, is being held without bail. His attorney, John Salsberg, told reporters after the hearing that Markoff is "not guilty of the charges. He has his family's support. I have not received any document or report or piece of evidence other than what I heard in the courtroom. All I have at the moment are words -- no proof of anything."

A procedural not-guilty plea was entered on Markoff's behalf, according to Suffolk County District Attorney Daniel Conley.

Markoff is also charged in connection with the April 10 robbery of Trisha Leffler, 29, at a Westin Hotel in Boston.

Leffler was robbed of $800 in cash and $250 in American Express giftcards, according to police reports. She was held at gunpoint and bound, prosecutors said.

Megan McAllister, who identified herself as Markoff's fiancee, maintained his innocence in an e-mail sent to ABC News. McAllister said Markoff "is the wrong man" and "was set up."

"Unfortunately, you were given wrong information as was the public," she wrote. "All I have to say to you is Philip is a beautiful person inside and out and could not hurt a fly!"

Authorities believe the motive in Brisman's death was robbery, Conley told reporters. In executing a search warrant at Markoff's home, police found a firearm, along with restraints and duct tape, he said.

Authorities in Boston are working with police in Warwick, Rhode Island, on what could be a related case. On April 16 at a Holiday Inn Express in Warwick, a man tied up and demanded money from a 26-year-old dancer who had posted a Craigslist advertisement, Warwick Police Chief Col. Stephen McCartney said.

The robbery was interrupted when the woman's husband entered the room. After pointing his gun at the husband, the suspect fled, McCartney said. He said the incident "may be related to similar crimes occurring in the Boston area" but that had not been determined.

Markoff's Family Visit Craigslist Suspect In Jail
Markoff's Family Visit Craigslist Suspect In Jail - Local News Story - WCVB Boston

BOSTON -- The parents, brother and sister-in-law of Philip Markoff visited the accused killer in the Boston jail for the first time Friday since his arraignment this week on murder, kidnapping and robbery charges.

Dr. Richard Markoff and Susan Haynes arrived early in the afternoon at the Nashua Street Jail to see their son, who has been charged in connection with the April 14 death in a Boston hotel of a woman offering erotic massages, and the robbery of a Las Vegas prostitute the week before that. Both offered their services on Craigslist.

Markoff's parents stayed at the jail for about two hours and left without making any comments to media gathered outside. Markoff's brother and sister-in-law also visited him on Friday. It was unclear when or if Markoff's fiancee, Megan MicAllister, would visit.

Markoff was arraigned on the charges Tuesday, but his attorney John Salsberg said he was under the impression Markoff's parents were not allowed to see their son right away.

"What I was told was that he couldn't have any visitors until he was classified, that that's the rule of the jail, and so my understanding was that the first day they could come was going to be today and so I asked them to wait until today," Salsberg said.

"This is difficult for them, they would really request that they have some privacy ... They love their son very much. They are supportive of him, that's what they would say if they were speaking themselves," Salsberg added.

Authorities were so concerned about Markoff's mental state that he was moved to an isolation cell on Thursday after a possible suicide attempt.

Markoff was separated from the other inmates at the jail and was wearing a special restraining suit to keep him from harming himself, the Boston Herald reported.

Law enforcement sources said Thursday that shoelace marks were found on Markoff's neck, consistent with a suicide attempt

There was a preliminary match between a gun found in Markoff's Quincy apartment and the bullets used to kill JuLissa Brisman, 26, the erotic masseuse who was shot to death in Boston's Marriott Copley Square hotel April 14.

Markoff's fingerprints were also found on duct tape at one of the hotel crime scenes and on plastic restraints used in one of the attacks, ABC News reported.

Markoff, 23, a Boston University medical student, was charged with murder in connection with Brisman's death and was also charged with robbery and kidnapping in connection with an attack on a Las Vegas prostitute in Boston's Westin Hotel the week before Brisman died. Both women had advertised erotic services on Craigslist.

Markoff's attorney has maintained Markoff's innocence, as has his New Jersey fiancee Megan McAllister, whose father said she remains "confident in Phil."

Salsberg would not confirm the suicide attempt but said his client is having a "tough time" adjusting to being in jail.

“It's difficult for anybody to make the transition from a life of freedom to being incarcerated or detained, particularly the first few days,” said Salsberg. “However, I have a tremendous amount of confidence that the Sheriff's Department of Suffolk County is going to make sure that he’s well taken care of and looked after.”

Prosecutors who used computer forensics to trace Markoff are now turning to Craigslist to search for other possible victims in the case.

Markoff is also suspected in an attempted robbery in Warwick, R.I., of a woman who had posted a Craigslist ad as a stripper.

Investigators are looking into whether Markoff had developed a gambling habit.

"As we explore various motives for the robberies, gambling is certainly a motive that we will look at," Suffolk County District Attorney Dan Conley said Tuesday.

Markoff opened a line of credit at Connecticut's Foxwoods Casino in 2008. His visits there increased in March and April of 2009, ABC News reported.

Two days after the attack on the prostitute in Westin Hotel that netted $800, Markoff was at the casino on April 12. Two days later, on April 14, Brisman was killed at the Marriott Hotel. Two days after that, Markoff was back at Foxwoods, collecting winnings of $5,300.

Ok, everyone, please don't let the Craiglist killer cloud your perspective about CL or safey. CL has done at least a million ads a day.... sales, services, even exotic services.

And out of millions of exchanges, there's a murder. And you think you'll be the next victim out of millions of people in CL? Come on! You'd be likely to die in an accident on the way to get a freebie than to get killed by a poster!

I've sold items on CL and bought some as well. No problem. Remember, MOST people are honest and decent; the media doesn't care about honest decent people, they want sex, lies, killings, deception, and all those horrible sins.

Craigslist founder isn't closing 'erotic' section
Craigslist founder isn't closing 'erotic' section

PROVIDENCE, R.I. – The founder of Craigslist does not plan to close the "erotic services" section of the Web site despite criticism that has intensified after a medical student was accused of killing a Boston masseuse who advertised there.

Craig Newmark contends his site already allows users to flag inappropriate material they believe should be removed.

"Sometimes a bad guy of some sort tries to pull a fast one on our site," he said in an interview that aired Friday night on ABC News. "We don't want it there, it's wrong, and that's why we have the help of the general community and the law enforcement community getting rid of things like that."

Newmark's comments defied a request by Connecticut Attorney General Richard Blumenthal, who asked Craigslist to immediately eliminate photographs in the "erotic services" section, hire staff to screen images and ads that violate the site's terms of service and fine users who violate those terms.

The call for action follows the arrest of Philip Markoff, a Boston University medical student charged with killing Julissa Brisman, a 25-year-old masseuse, on April 14 at the Boston Marriott Copley Place hotel. Craigslist CEO Defends "Erotic" Ads
Craigslist CEO Defends "Erotic" Ads - CBS News

The chief executive of Craigslist has a message for people who try to use the popular Internet advertising site to commit crimes: You're going to get caught.

Violent crimes linked to Craigslist ads in Boston and Minnesota have made headlines, but CEO Jim Buckmaster said Wednesday the site is an "extremely unsafe venue for criminal activity because you're virtually guaranteeing that you're going to get caught."

"That's been the case with nearly every serious violent crime that's been connected with the site," Buckmaster said in a telephone interview from San Francisco, where Craiglist is based. "There's an electronic trail leading to yourself. So don't use Craigslist for crime unless you want to go to jail."

A Minnesota man was sentenced to life in prison without the possibility of parole this month for the 2007 slaying of Katherine Ann Olson, who answered a phony ad he posted for a baby sitter.

And this week, a 23-year-old Boston University medical student was charged with robbing women who advertised erotic services on Craigslist and killing one of them, Julissa Brisman.

"We were shocked and saddened to learn that a horrific crime like this had any connection to the use of Craigslist, and our hearts went out to the family and friends of Julissa Brisman," Buckmaster said.

Philip Markoff, 23, is accused in the death of Brisman, a masseuse from New York City who was found dead in the doorway of her upscale hotel room after being bashed in the head and shot three times. Markoff also is accused of robbing and tying up another woman, and police have said there could be more victims.

Defense attorney John Salsberg has said Markoff isn't guilty.

Buckmaster said the attention Craigslist has received because of crimes linked to it is partly a function of how heavily the site is used and the relative newness of the Internet.

"There are 50 million people using the site every month, and the site has facilitated billions of human interactions over its history. Compared to human society as a whole the risks of Craigslist are low, but they're not zero," he said.

Buckmaster declined to say much about how Craigslist is cooperating with authorities investigating the Boston case but said, "We make ourselves 100 percent available to them and provide them with any and all information we have that they may request."

Law enforcement officials generally ask that Craigslist not comment on what it's doing in specific cases, he said.

Buckmaster defended Craigslist's inclusion of the "erotic services" classification on its sites. He said users requested it so those ads would be posted there, where users can avoid them, instead of being scattered among other ad categories. He also insisted that illegal activity is "absolutely not welcome there."

He said Craigslist will donate 100 percent of its net revenues from those ads to charities, under an agreement announced last November with 40 state attorneys general, though he said figures aren't available yet.

Craigslist's city sites include tips on personal safety and avoiding scams and fraud. Buckmaster said the Minnesota and Boston cases provide an opportunity to remind people that it makes sense when meeting someone found through an online ad to take the same kinds of precautions they should take offline.

"Anytime you're going to meet for the first time choose a public place where there are other people around. ... Consider bringing a friend along. Let someone know where you're going to be and when you'll be returning. Take your cell phone along. Trust your instincts and report suspicious activities to authorities," he said.

Craigslist founder Craig Newmark will attend a benefit concert in Minnesota on May 3 for a scholarship fund at St. Olaf College in memory of Olson. The 24-year-old was slain by Michael John Anderson, 20, who used a Craigslist ad to lure her to his home in the Minneapolis suburb of Savage.

Buckmaster said Craigslist officials were inspired by the Olson family's efforts to keep the focus of the case on Katherine Olson's life and what she meant to her family and friends.

"When there was an opportunity for Craigslist to participate in some way, that was something we were excited about doing," he said.

Fiancée Still Stands By Accused 'Craigslist Killer'
Fiancée Still Stands By Accused 'Craigslist Killer' - Crime & Courts, : People.com

As the evidence mounts, so does Megan McAllister's resolve: She remains committed to Philip Markoff, the man identified by authorities as the "Craigslist Killer."

"To me and my family, he is a loving and caring person and in the eyes of the law and the constitution, he is innocent until proven guilty beyond a reasonable doubt," she said in a statement Monday. "I just can only hope that the criminal justice system will not be overwhelmed and persuaded by what is being put forth in the media."

The statement was read by family attorney Robert A. Honecker Jr. outside the McAllister home in Little Silver, N.J. Markoff, 23, has been charged with the murder of a woman and the assault of another, both in Boston hotels. In a new twist, there's an allegation the preppy medical student used Craigslist to seek out men as well as women for sexual activities.

Markoff and McAllister, 25, were planning an August wedding, and the recent events have clearly strained her family.

When asked how Megan was doing, her father, Jim, with tears in his blue eyes, told reporters: "Megan is not doing so well, it's a very tense situation."

And in her statement, she says: "In the past two short weeks, my life and what I hoped my life to be has dramatically changed."

"I also love my fiancé and I will continue to support him throughout this legal process," she says.

McAllister says she intends to cooperate with Markoff's attorney and the Suffolk County District Attorney's Office within the next few days, but insists: "What has been portrayed and leaked to the media is not the Philip Markoff that I know."

Megan McAllister shows no signs of abandoning her fiancé despite the murder charge. What do you think?

What your Opinion?

More Charges To Come In Craigslist Case

Craigslist killing suspect can't afford lawyer
Craigslist killing suspect can't afford lawyer

BOSTON – The Boston University medical student accused of slaying a 25-year-old masseuse he met on Craigslist owes more than $130,000 in student loans and cannot afford an attorney, according to court papers.

Philip Markoff, 23, also does not get money from his parents and has been unemployed for a while making him eligible for an appointed attorney paid through public funds, court documents showed.

"(Markoff) stated he did not receive financial support from his family," said an April 23 document signed by a probation officer. "(Markoff) further stated he was unemployed for a lengthy period of time and was essentially living off student loans in the amount of $130,000."

Court papers say Markoff was interviewed on April 21 by officer Athena Kotarides, who later wrote that Markoff signed an indigency form. The Committee for Public Counsel Services appointed attorney John Salsberg to represent Markoff later that day.

Markoff was a second-year medical student at BU at the time of his arrest last week during a traffic stop as he drove to Foxwoods Casino in Connecticut. He also graduated from the State University of New York-Albany.

Markoff is charged with murdering Julissa Brisman on April 14 at the Boston Marriott Copley Place hotel. He also is charged in a robbery at a nearby hotel of another masseuse police say he met through the Craigslist classified ads Web site.

He has pleaded not guilty.

Salsberg has said Markoff is innocent of the charges.

Meanwhile, a member of the band booked to play at Markoff's wedding said the Aug. 14 wedding has been called off. William Forte, the keyboardist and owner of the Bstreetband, a Bruce Springsteen tribute band, said a relative of Markoff's fiancee, Megan McAllister, called him and said "that as of right now, there is no way they will be able to have the Aug. 14 wedding date."

Forte said he plans to return the couple's $500 deposit.

"Under the circumstances, I would never hold them to the contract," Forte said.

A law enforcement official said Friday that Markoff's fingerprint was found on a wall of the Holiday Inn Express in Warwick, R.I., where a stripper has said she was tied up and held at gunpoint by a man she met through the site. The official spoke on condition of anonymity because he was not authorized to discuss the case.

The official also said Markoff sent text messages from the hotel but said he didn't have information about what he said or to whom he wrote. Markoff has not been charged in Rhode Island.

Craigslist Victim's Goal Was Staying Sober
Craigslist Victim's Goal Was Staying Sober - CBS News

The victim of the alleged "Craigslist killer" recently got sober and was looking to get her life on track, according to personal diary entries reviewed by the Village Voice.

Julissa Brisman was beaten and shot to death in a Boston hotel room April 14 after police say suspect Philip Markoff responded to an ad on Craigslist, the popular online classified site. Markoff pleaded not guilty to charges related to Brisman's murder and the robbery of another woman. Authorities also suspect Markoff in a second robbery attempt.

According to Brisman's journal, the 25-year-old struggled with alcohol before resolving to get sober and start repairing damaged relationships in her life. (Read 48 Hours' profile detailing her training as a drug counselor.)

"I had a taste of the sober life, and I liked it," she wrote in her last entry. "So why do this to myself; All the pain, humiliation and suffering [punctuation hers]. That was September 19, 2008 and I haven't touched a drink since."

After quitting her job as a bartender, Brisman supported herself through a series of odd jobs ranging from work at tanning salons, freelance modeling, acting and advertising herself as an erotic masseuse on Craigslist.

Brisman never wrote about her work as a masseuse in the diary, instead focusing on her sobriety.

"I asked ma what she wanted for Mother's Day and she said 'I already got the best Mother's Day you could ever give me, your sobriety,'" she wrote. "Put a smile on my face. I know cheesy, but being sober makes me smile."

Markoff is currently being held under suicide watch, reports CBS News correspondent Michelle Gielan. Court papers show that he is broke - saddled with $130,000 in student loan debt and unable to afford a lawyer. Police suspect gambling debts were the motive for Mardoff's alleged crimes.

Markoff still has the support of his fiancée, Megan McAllister, who issued a statement through her attorney Monday.

"To me and my family, he is a loving caring person."

But despite the words of support, the Bruce Springsteen tribute band scheduled to perform at their August wedding has been told they are no longer needed on that date.

16 Pairs of Women's Underwear Found in Home of Alleged 'Craigslist Killer'

Police found 16 pairs of women's panties in the home of Philip Markoff, the Boston University Medical student charged with the murder of a sex worker who was shot dead in an upscale hotel room, a law enforcement source told ABC News today.

The panties were hidden under Markoff's bed in the Quincy home he shared with his fiancee. Along with the panties was a large bag with roughly 60 pairs of plastic flex-cuff restraints, the law enforcement source said.

Markoff has been charged with allegedly contacting two women through the Web site Craigslist, and luring them to upscale hotels, where police say he bound their hands with plastic cuffs and robbed them. Markoff is also accused of killing one of the women, Julissa Brisman, after she resisted. He has pleaded not guilty.

The panties and restraints were found along with duct tape next to a hollowed-out copy of "Gray's Anatomy" that hid the semi-automatic weapon police believe was used to shoot Brisman, 26, of New York City April 14. Brisman had rented a room at the tony Boston Copley Marriott from Monday April 13 through Wednesday April 15 to offer $200 massages "with hand relief."

Markoff, who has been dubbed the "Craigslist Killer," is charged with bashing Brisman's head in around 10:10 p.m. Tuesday night and shooting her three times at point-blank range.

He is currently in the psychiatric unit of Nashua Street jail, where he is monitored around-the-clock after he attempted to strangle himself with shoelaces and tried to slice his wrists with a spoon he sharpened to a point using concrete in his cell, a law enforcement source said.

Last week, he told his parents, brother and sister-in-law during a jailhouse visit to "move to California and forget about him,'' another law enforcement source told ABC News.
