I know this area is primarily reserved for Americans, but I figured that there should be a spot to discuss the current federal election north of the border. :)

A brief history for those unaware:

The Conservative Party currently holds a minority government. They have for the past four years. The minority government is fragile; it can be easily toppled by a non-confidence motion. In March, every other party in the House of Commons voted against the Conservatives' federal budget. This resulted in the federal election that is currently taking place. This government was toppled two years ago (the Conservatives won twice in four years).

Stephen Harper (Conservative Party): Canada's current prime minister. His party has been able to maintain a small lead over the Liberal Party for quite some time.

Michael Ignatieff (Liberal Party): Official leader of the opposition. He lived in the United States for thirty years before coming to Canada in 2006. He entered Canadian politics almost immediately after his entry into Canada. After Stephane Dion stepped down as the Liberal leader, Ignatieff opted to take over. The party has progressively lost popularity. His party has made plans to join a coalition with the NDP and Bloc if Harper wins another minority. He plans on leading the country if this happens.

Jack Layton (New Democratic Party): Leader of Canada's largest social democratic party (essentially socialist). It is gradually gaining popularity and is most often the party of choice for Canada's younger generation. They're trying to be the "alternative" to the Liberals.

Gilles Duceppe (Bloc Quebecois): Leader of Canada's most popular separatist party. Considering only Quebecers can vote for the Bloc, they are very limited in what they can do and have little influence.

Elizabeth May (Green Party): An American-born environmentalist and leader of Canada's largest envrionmental party. The party has gained a lot of popularity in recent years, but has technically not yet won a seat. They typically run a candidate in every riding. May was part of a controversy earlier this month when broadcasters refused to allow her to debate with Harper, Ignatieff, Layton, and Duceppe on live television.

What are your thoughts on the election? Have you decided who you are going to vote for yet? Perhaps you are apathetic due to the high number of elections we've in such a short period of time. I'm very excited to be voting on May 2nd (it will be my first election). :)

Everyone is more than welcome to participate in the discussion. :)

While I identify myself as a democratic socialist and agree with the NDP's platform, I am turned off by Jack Layton's leadership. I do not appreciate the idea of the NDP forming an alliance with Quebec separatists (and the Liberals, but they're not the reason why I'm against the coalition) in order to gain power over the Conservatives. I'm for Canadian unity; I feel that the coalition threatens this. I will not be voting Liberal this election for the same reason. I also dislike Ignatieff and question his experience considering he lived in the U.S. for thirty years prior to running in his first Canadian election. I will not be voting Green because I feel that they have only have one focus in particular: the environment. I dislike single-focus parties. I will be voting for the Conservatives in this election. I kind of hoped that I would be able to vote for a party that reflected more of my political views, but it seems as though there is only one party capable of running the country.

 Sorry. I would but it is like some horrible Social Studies lesson I couldn't understand in school.

And age had not improved my understanding. :hmm:

Interesting thread that you created about election in Canada and I don't have much knowledge about political system in Canada, except for more than two parties system. I wish that federal and state legislatives are very multi-parties instead of two parties system in US.

I remember about you labeled me as republican over situation with rich people but I'm not republican at all. I'm independent voter and mostly side with left views but side on right side for immigration, gun rights and few other issues. I'm from area that is very heavily republicans and doesn't have any problem, except for deal with homophobia in anywhere. I'm strongly preserve in southern culture too, such as label confederate flag as heritage and southern pride.

No problem, Botti. :) This stuff isn't for everyone. Going to be honest, Canadian politics aren't as near thrilling as American politics (I don't even think that the word "thrilling" should even be used as an adjective when describing politics).

Some Canadians would actually say that they prefer the American two-party system (a lot of people I know have said this). It is said that because there are so many different political views, so many parties have to be formed to reflect these views... It makes it very difficult for one particular party to form a majority government (the type of government that can ACTUALLY get things done). It's nice to have more than just two choices, but some would prefer only having to choose between one or the other... It's easier, I guess.

I'm going to be honest, I don't remember much of that conversation, but I do remember it taking place. Perhaps I didn't take into consideration that people can agree with some right-wing concepts and still end up on the left side of the political compass. :)

Loving the idea of a NDP official opposition. The NDP is definitely becoming more influential in federal politics! Not so sure how I feel about Jack Layton as prime minister. If the Conservatives get another minority government, "Prime Minister Layton" may be a household name. Hmmm!

I voted in the advance poll last Monday.

I truly hope we will finally have a Conservative majority government tomorrow night.

How is it possible to be an independent voter in a "two party system" :)

I'm on the fence. I don't really want the Conservatives to have too much power, but at the same time, I don't want the coalition to form a government. I think that a Conservative majority might just happen tomorrow night. Stranger things have happened!

I just wish they would appoint someone else instead of Jim Flaherty to be the Finance Minister. He has been doing an awful job as one for years.

Oh yeah, I should also mention that the corporate tax rate here is one of the lowest tax rates in the world. However, it does not benefit the small business owners and the taxpayers, only the corporations. Yet the Conservative party want to lower it again, why screw the small business owners over and over? It's a real shame.

The truth is, there are not many viable options out there and I don't believe that a majority government of any party would be in the best interests for Canada at the moment. Not with all the mud-slinging they are doing, and I do not care for the Liberal leader Iggy, he's a big phony just like Dion was.

John Scherer, the video professor... er... I meant Jack Layton, well, he's an interesting man. Although there are many things I do not really agree with regarding his party's platform. I'm even going to get started on the Green party.

I just wish we had better options.

Now the Prime Minister of Canada is warning us that if anyone vote for the NDP, we will be subjected to higher gas prices.

Don't anyone see the irony here?

Just political tactic.

It's a fear-mongering tactic, and a bad one at that. They wouldn't have resorted to it if they weren't worried about the NDP gaining on them.

Our gas prices has literally doubled under the Conservative government. Here's a little-known secret, they tax the gas tax itself, believe it or not.

Agreed.

I'm not familiar with Flaherty's policies, so I don't really have an opinion on whether or not the Conservatives should appoint a new finance minister.

Indeed. However, I do think that the NDP's new found fame could work out well for the Conservatives in the end. They might just get their majority after all.

I wasn't aware of this. Fortunately, I rarely have to drive anywhere. :)

I think us Americans could say the same thing about our politicians. :P
