    Pittsburgh Deaf Community

Hey there! I'm in Pittsburgh. The Facebook group (I think) Pittsburgh Deaf Connection (or something like that) is where things are usually posted. and older folks stuff and WPSD stuff is usually send out through an email blast- if you ask in the Facebook group folks will know how to get...

hard of hearing and social skills

I'm far more outgoing in hearing circles, because I need to A. Control the conversation, so I know what the topic is B. Be the one who is talking most of the time so I can miss less of the total converstation C. Be super friendly, so when I accident ignore someone or inappropriately respond...

    Left out of family conversations

Agreed- I love spending 1 on 1 time with a person in my family, but for family events (holidays, celebrations, etc), I'm so bored and isolated. Luckily, when you get older you get to pick who you spend your time with. :)

    Identifying as Deaf and disabled

If that is how you see yourself, then it is an accurate description, and if you don't try to apply it to folks who don't identify with the label, then why would someone else have a problem with it? Not their business. You go on your your Deaf and disabled self. :)

Hearing Aids Mess My Hair- Suggestions?

Good idea :) This may end up being my solution. I don't like hairspray, because at the end of the work day when I let my hair down, it is hairsprayed in an odd shape, but I may just have to get over that. Short hair would have to be pulled back and have the same problems :/...

Hearing Aids Mess My Hair- Suggestions?

Hi All :) When I have my (long) hair in a pony tail or braid, through the day my HA's mess up the hair around them. When I was a kid, I used to use little clips to hold those hairs down, but they damage and tear my hair over time. Normally, I wear my hair down, but now I have a job where I...

    Calling All Deaf Musicians!

Piano and Guitar when I was younger. Badly. I think very badly. :-P

What do you do when hearing family comes over?

I go and usually get a useful exchange 1 on 1 with a couple of people if I stay outside or in some room people aren't really using. After a while trying with the group, I usually give up and just play on my phone or sit quietly and think about whatever I have in my thought queue.

why deaf see better than hearies

Yeah, Daily Mail isn't inherently to be trusted, but it isn't inherently wrong either. Here is the actual paper: PLOS ONE: Visual Advantage in Deaf Adults Linked to Retinal Changes

    Why are you deaf?

Agreed that the second question is a better way of asking, but I try not to judge on forums where I've come to find non-native English speakers. Here, some people have English as a second language, so I wouldn't attack the direct and simple manner of the OP. Just my thought. *shrug*

    Reclaiming the term "hearing impaired"

People talk about not classifying yourself, but when talking with hearing people there are practical reasons for letting them know I can't hear. With Deaf people I meet, usually as soon as they see my hearing aids, they ask if I'm Deaf. So that doesn't really work. I've really run into a...

    10 Facts about the Deaf

Hmmm.... now I'm curious to see how Cali and Fl people sign "drown" differently.

Can You Answer a Few Questions For Me?

I appreciate that you have to do this for class, but as for "a chance to make their voice heard"- I, like all the other Deaf/HOH people I know, are perfectly capable of making our voices heard for ourselves. 1) HOH Moderate to Severe 2) 26-35 3) I'm a lady 4) Caucasian 5) MS 6) Yes 7) I'm a...

    Why are you deaf?

Grummer, I disagree that this is an uninteresting and insensitive thread. Because it is a thread on a discussion forum, and not a direct question at any one person, it doesn't have to be answered by anyone who doesn't want to. I'm not sensitive about my hearing loss- it is just part of my...

Why do some people like to lie about how worse their hearing actually is?

I'm HOH and I'm sure that people (both Deaf and hearing) have all different assumptions about my hearing level. One ear is at moderate hearing loss and the other at severe hearing loss. But, really, my hearing is better or worse depending on which frequency we are looking at. Until recently...

    How to choose an audiologist

Insurance depends on the state- some states require that insurance companies cover them, but others don't and that pretty much determines whether or not they are covered. You can see details for the states that do make sure they are covered here: State Insurance Mandates for Hearing Aids If...

What are some good one-liners or humor to use when mentioning my hearing issues?

I've said things like: "Wait-wait-wait- I'm waaay to deaf for you to talk that fast." :-P "I'm sorry- I was over here being all deaf. Can you say that again?" To a friend talking with their back turned, "And for all the deaf people in the audience, Jane just said...?" If they are complaining...

I'm Hearing and Confused...Need your help

I'm HOH and working on my ASL, too, and am constant worried that I'm doing something offensive. Luckily, if you make a friend in the Deaf community, you can with them if you think something might not be well-received, much like if you are visiting a new country for the first time.
