    just want to say thanks

Thanks for the warm welcome to AD! It's helped me so much knowing that there is a community here that understands what I'm going through and is willing to answer my questions. I'm stumbling through this new perspective on life that being deaf has given me, but tripping up much less so than I...

Goofs and gaffes by newly deaf?

I agree.... that might lead to alot more of fingers than I actually deserve. Is it just me or does most everybody driving these days seems to be oblivious to others on the road ? It seems like no one uses directionals and nearly all have a get-out-of-my-way mentality. We probably drive...

    hearing dogs

Hey Doc, it is really good to know that housing rules for my complex cannot apply to service dogs. That makes sense. Unfortunately, our property manager is a real piece of work and would probably fight me on a big dog every step of the way. I love Corgies - the queen's dog! - so I'll have to...

When hearie person said to you something and didn't know you're Ddeaf/Hhoh....

Hey Hear Again, I can't believe anyone would think you are stupid! You are obviously an intelligent and articulate young woman with a deep and complex soul. And I know that after being online with you for, oh, 3 days. Keep on keeping on being yourself! Many hugs! ps. I too suffer from mental...

What have you learned in 2008.

I learned that I am, actually deaf. I say learned, but I mean 'accepted'. It's been an awful year, but coming to terms with that one thing has really helped me have hope for the future. Plus it means I might finally get a dog!

    hearing dogs

Ironically, I used to train assisting dogs when I was in college. The Canine Companion program is so wonderful, but it was heartbreaking to give up a new dog every 2 years (I had to quit after the 2nd dog). Now I find that I might really need a dog myself, but I just can't have a big dog like...

    Phantom Sounds .. Audio Halucinations?

oh and to actually add to the conversation :M I hear phantom music all the time. I also hear the phone ringing when it is not. I hear people calling my name all the time. I hear ringing and whistling. I hear phantom cats meowing. I also hear a flute softly playing scales. But I can't hear my...

    Phantom Sounds .. Audio Halucinations?

Hey Darren! I also have MS related hearing loss (and probably all those sinus and upper respiratory infections [and concerts] didn't help either). This is a little off topic I guess, but I am also not in a wheelchair or braces and can get around just fine except for the pain and slight loss of...

Goofs and gaffes by newly deaf?

too many times! When I could fully hear, I often boiled off pots of pasta and such. Since I've starting really losing my hearing I have: 1. locked my boyfriend out of the house - more than a few times - and, while I'm sitting in the house wondering "where the heck is he?" - he's outside...

When hearie person said to you something and didn't know you're Ddeaf/Hhoh....

Oh Nika! I would have a very hard time not getting rude with that one - how can people confuse being blind vs deaf? I would have to tell them: "why are you shouting at my eyeballs? you may as do an interpretive dance to show me what you're saying!"... and that would be quickly followed by...

When hearie person said to you something and didn't know you're Ddeaf/Hhoh....

I subbed for another prof's class last semester and explained to the class that I had a hearing loss. The lecture got underway and towards the end of the hour I asked if anyone had questions or comments. One kid looked straight at me and said "why should we say anything if you won't hear us?"...

When hearie person said to you something and didn't know you're Ddeaf/Hhoh....

oh lord Molly! I laughed hard when I read your message. I can hear lots of mumbling too and if I try to guess I usually get what they've said wrong.... sometimes it is really funny. One time a student asked me "is the test online" and I whipped around and said "did you just ask me if I have sex...

    newly deaf and struggling

Thanks for the reply Babito and Almyra! Your suggestions are really useful... it almost sounds like I'm going to have to develop a mini-curriculum... luckily I teach anthropology, so I can work sensitivity training in as an exercise in 'cultural relativity'. Thanks as well Naisho! I am...

    newly deaf and struggling

Hey Berry, thanks for the advice. I am pretty stubborn too and, on good days, my hope is to use my newfound perspective to help others learn how to deal with my being deaf/HoH so that they ARE respectful and patient, and then deaf awareness will carry forward into other lives and maybe change a...

Bottesini and Birdie - love the tshirt idea! Is there a shop/online store that sells those kind of shirts? That would be hilarious.

    newly deaf and struggling

Bottesini, your post actually made me laugh! My tendency would be to do just those things - internalize, avoid, and adapt. On darker days, I think about quitting everything and going on disability. :(

    newly deaf and struggling

Hi babyblue! That's exactly what I'm afraid will happen. Should I learn sign language? I mean, I can talk fine, but can't hear... seems like hearing people are the ones who should learn sign language. I will probably take some classes anyway - luckily my university has an ASL center and an...
