There are a lot of activities that one could use ham radio for that doesn't require hearing for such as: TTY, PSK, Packet Radio, SSTV, and others. Hell, I'm sure you could rig up a light to your radio and copy CW from the light. I don't see why a deaf person couldn't be a ham op, its fun thats...

I'm currently surviving on about $12,000 a year while a the same time going to school. You just get into the habit of pinching pennies and being very frugal. If I was making 20K right now, I'd be pretty happy.

have you tried installing linux-backports-modules-jaunty-generic? I've heard that works with the AR928X.
